A large number of animal models of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are already available for studies on mechanisms and experimental treatments of TBI. Immediate and early seizures have been described in many of these models with focal or mixed type (both gray and white matter damage) injury. Recent long-term video-electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring studies have demonstrated that TBI produced by lateral fluid-percussion injury in rats results in the development of late seizures, that is, epilepsy. These animals develop hippocampal alterations that are well described in status epilepticus-indu

ADAMs (a disintegrin and metalloprotease) are a family of trans-membrane multi-domain metalloproteases with multiple functions. So far, more than 35 ADAM family members have been identified from mammalian and nonmammalian sources. Although some functions of ADAMs have been elucidated, their expression patterns remain poorly investigated, especially during CNS development. Here, we cloned the open reading frames or full-length cDNAs of ADAM9, ADAM10, ADAM12, ADAM22 and ADAM23 from chicken embryonic brain, analyzed their evolutionary relationship, and mapped their expression in the embryonic chi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Our aim was to investigate the presence of brain gray matter (GM) abnormalities in patients with different forms of essential tremor (ET).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used optimized voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and manually traced single region-of-interest analysis in 50 patients with familial ET and in 32 healthy subjects. Thirty patients with ET had tremor of the arms (a-ET), whereas the remaining 20 patients had both arm and head tremor (h-ET).
RESULTS: VBM showed marked atrophy of the cerebellar vermis in the patients with h-ET with respect to healthy subjects (P(c

OBJECTIVE: To determine the anatomic correlate of prosopagnosia in subjects with semantic dementia.
METHODS: We identified all subjects who had been evaluated by an experienced behavioral neurologist, met criteria for semantic dementia, and had completed a volumetric head MRI scan. In all subjects, historical records were reviewed and subjects in which the presence (n = 15) or absence (n = 12) of prosopagnosia was specifically ascertained by the neurologist were identified. Voxel-based morphometry was used to assess patterns of gray matter atrophy in subjects with and without prosopagnosia co

Acute flaccid polio-like paralysis occurs during natural West Nile virus (WNV) infection in a subset of cases in animals and humans. To evaluate the pathology and the possibility for therapeutic intervention, the authors developed a model of acute flaccid paralysis by injecting WNV directly into the sciatic nerve or spinal cord of hamsters. By directly injecting selected sites of the nervous system with WNV, the authors mapped the lesions responsible for hind limb paralysis to the lumbar spinal cord. Immunohistochemical analysis of spinal cord sections from paralyzed hamsters revealed that WNV

Patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) show periodic sharp wave complexes (PSWCs) on electroencephalography (EEG) during the course of their illness. However, the source location of PSWCs and their pathophysiological mechanism remain unclear. Six patients with sporadic CJD who showed typical PSWCs on EEGs were selected for the study. Sixty epochs, each spanning the period from -0.25 to +0.25 s after the negative maximum of a typical PSWC, were selected for analysis in each patient. The EEG data matrix was decomposed using an independent component analysis based on a simple, neural netwo

Previous animal studies have demonstrated that 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) exposure causes serotonin axotomy that is greatest in occipital cortex (including primary visual cortex) where serotonergic axons innervate neurons and blood vessels. Human MDMA users have altered serotonergic function and reduced gray matter density in occipital cortex. The fMRI BOLD method is potentially sensitive to both the neuronal and vascular consequences of MDMA-induced serotonin toxicity. To test the hypothesis that MDMA users have altered visual system function, we used the fMRI BOLD technique to

Morphologic abnormalities of the superior temporal gyrus (STG) as well as its sub-regions such as Heschl's gyrus (HG) or planum temporale (PT) have been reported in schizophrenia patients, but have not been extensively studied in schizotypal subjects. In the present study, magnetic resonance images were acquired from 65 schizophrenia patients, 39 schizotypal disorder patients, and 72 healthy controls. Volumetric analyses were performed using consecutive 1-mm coronal slices on the temporal pole (TP) and superior temporal sub-regions [planum polare (PP), HG, PT, rostral STG, and caudal STG]. The

The E200K mutation on chromosome 20 can cause familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Patients with this mutation are clinically similar to those with sporadic CJD, but their imaging features are not well documented. We report here the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging characteristics of this unique group of patients using three-dimensional spoiled gradient recalled (SPGR) echo images, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) measurements, MR spectroscopy and a fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequence.

In addition to the well-documented mood-stabilizing effects of lithium in manic-depressive illness patients, recent in vitro and in vivo studies in rodents and humans have increasingly implicated that lithium can be used in the treatment of acute brain injuries (e.g., ischemia) and chronic neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, tauopathies, and Huntington's disease). Consistent with this novel view, substantial evidences suggest that depressive illness is not a mere neurochemical disease, but is linked to gray matter atrophy due to the reduced number/size of neur

L1 is a cell adhesion molecule associated with axonal outgrowth, fasciculation, and guidance during development and injury. In this study, we examined the long-term effects of spinal cord injury with and without exercise on the re-expression of L1 throughout the rat spinal cord. Spinal cords from control rats were compared to those from rats receiving complete mid-thoracic spinal cord transections at postnatal day 5, daily treadmill step training for up to 8 weeks, or both transection and step training. Three months after spinal cord transection, we observed substantially higher levels of L1 e

Aicardi syndrome is a sporadic disorder that affects primarily females and is hypothesized to be caused by heterozygous mutations in an X-linked gene. Its main features include of a triad of infantile spasms, agenesis of the corpus callosum, and distinctive chorioretinal lacunae. Additional common findings include moderate to profound mental retardation, gray matter heterotopia, gyral anomalies, and vertebral and rib defects. To date, no consistent facial dysmorphisms have been described. We examined 40 girls with Aicardi syndrome and determined that consistent facial features appeared in over

Based on concepts that endogenous opioids participate in neural transmission of pain, the present study in central poststroke pain (CPSP) patients investigated changes in opioid receptor (OR) binding in neural structures centrally involved in the processing of pain. Five patients with central pain after lesions in the brain stem, thalamus or parietal cortex and twelve healthy volunteers underwent a [11C]diprenorphine positron emission tomography study. Binding potentials were calculated using a reference region model in all subjects. Statistical parametric mapping was applied for t-statistical

Exposure to cycad (Cycas micronesica K.D. Hill) toxins via diet has been shown to induce neurodegeneration in vivo that mimics the progressive neurological disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis--parkinsonism dementia complex (ALS--PDC). In previous studies, specific cortical and subcortical cell loss was measured with conventional stained sections. In the present study, magnetic resonance (MR) microscopy was used to examine neurodegeneration in three dimensions (3D) in isolated intact brains and spinal cords. Mice were fed washed cycad for 2 months and showed progressive motor deficits resemb

An autopsy case of human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)-associated myelopathy (HAM) of 29 years' duration is reported. The patient had no history of surgery or blood transfusion and likely contracted HTLV-I sexually while traveling in an endemic area. At age 45, the patient began to experience gait disturbance; he later developed spastic tetraparesis. Autopsy revealed marked gross spinal cord atrophy, particularly in the middle to lower thoracic levels. Myelin and axonal degeneration were identified predominantly in the middle to lower thoracic spinal cord, extending into the medulla obl

The male proband reported here was born with appropriate anthropometric parameters at term as the second child of healthy nonconsanguineous parents. His only clinical symptom was bilateral congenital cataracts with strabismus at birth, and both lenses were removed surgically at the age of 8 months. The perinatal and infantile period thereafter was clinically uneventful and his psychomotor development appeared almost normal. At the age of 6 years he was hospitalized for slight muscle weakness, minor ptosis, nystagmus and decreased physical activity. Soon after, his general condition worsened, g

High-resolution magnetic resonance (MR) imaging affords an unprecedented opportunity to study the severity and distribution of neurodegenerative changes in the human brain. By selecting specific MR sequence parameters (i.e., TE and TR), different MR signals can be received from different tissue types, such as gray and white matter. Through optimization of the contrast between different tissue types, the surfaces and internal structures of brain structures of special interest can be visualized and quantitated. Metrics such as two-dimensional areas, three-dimensional volumes, and three-dimension

Remarkable developments in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology provide a broad range of potential applications to explore in vivo morphological characteristics of the human cerebral cortex. MR-based parcellation methods of the cerebral cortex may clarify the structural anomalies in specific brain subregions that reflect underlying neuropathological processes in brain illnesses. The present study describes detailed guidelines for the parcellation of the cerebral cortex into 41 subregions. Our method conserves the topographic uniqueness of individual brains and is based on our ability to

Positron emission tomography (PET) examination with both [11C]methyl-l-methionine (Met) and [18F]fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG) was performed in the same patients with acoustic neuroma wherever possible in order to compare the usefulness of the two methods. The study included six patients who visited the Osaka City University Hospitals, between April 1994 and October 1998, for complaints associated with acoustic neuroma. All patients were examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Met-PET. Four patients were examined by FDG-PET. The tumor's region of highest accumulation was selected as the
