Pinworms--Incidence, predictability and treatment with thiabendazole.

One hundred-ninety-two children, ages 2 to 16 years, selected from the outpatient department medical clinic without regard to presenting complaint were examined by conventional cellulose tape specimens obtained at home. Twenty-four per cent of the patients were found to have pinworm ova present. The physicians seeing the last 84 patients were asked to estimate the likelihood of enterobiasis in these children. By various means from history, physical examination or blood cell differential counts, estimates were slightly better than by chance. Treatment of 185 patients in a random fashion with pl

Early Discharge of Very Preterm Infants with Home Nasogastric Tube Feeding Is Not Associated with Increased Parental HADS Anxiety or Depression Scores.

Background: Early discharge with home nasogastric (NGT) feeding has been associated with favorable infant outcomes and high parental satisfaction. However, its impact on parental mental health has been insufficiently studied. We aimed to evaluate symptoms of anxiety and depression in mothers and fathers of very preterm infants discharged with or without NGT feeding. Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted at a German tertiary perinatal center between October 2020 and May 2024. A total of 238 preterm infants with a birth weight ≤ 1500 g and/or a postmenstrual age (PMA) ≤ 32 weeks w

ProHealth: a co-designed online home-based healthy eating and exercise programme for men with prostate cancer treated with androgen deprivation therapy - a study protocol for a feasibility and preliminary efficacy randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) improves survival in advanced prostate cancer but may lead to debilitating side effects, including sarcopenic obesity and a 10-45% increased risk of other comorbidities. Guidelines recommend exercise and nutrition interventions during ADT, but access to these services is often limited, and referral pathways are unclear. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of an online, home-based, multi-faceted, exercise, nutrition and education programme (ProHealth) for men with prostate cancer treated with ADT. ProHealth was co-d

Social Factors, Age, and Health at Time of Dementia Diagnosis.

IMPORTANCE: A timely diagnosis is crucial in ensuring high-quality care for individuals with dementia. Comparing age and health status at the time of dementia diagnosis across population subgroups can provide insights into vulnerable groups that may experience delayed diagnosis and/or a poorer prognosis. OBJECTIVE: To examine how age and health at the time of dementia diagnosis vary across sociodemographic subgroups. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A nationwide cross-sectional study of individuals with an incident dementia diagnosis from either specialist care or who were dispensed antide

Living alone with dementia is a neglected source of inequality: findings from a scoping review of research evidence.

BACKGROUND: With growing proportions of single-person households, increasing numbers of people with dementia are living alone, challenging the still-prevalent assumption that people have an informal carer available. We aimed to characterise the research literature on people living alone with dementia and summarise what is known about their characteristics and needs. METHOD: This scoping review followed Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines. Seven databases (PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, Ageline, EMBASE, PsycInfo, Social Policy and Practice) were searched fo

A scoping review of models of care and services for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy and hyperemesis gravidarum.

BACKGROUND: Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy and hyperemesis gravidarum have significant physical and psychological impacts on pregnant women. Women are often unable to participate in everyday care and work activities, potentially affecting individual wellbeing and ability to contribute to the economy. Research priorities for hyperemesis gravidarum have been established, however little is known about the current landscape of literature on the health and social care provided to affected women. To inform decision makers on effective models of care and identify remaining evidence gaps, this scopi

Evaluation of a results-based financing nutrition intervention for tuberculosis patients in Madhya Pradesh, India, implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Reducing malnutrition through food supplementation is a critical component of the WHO End Tuberculosis (TB) strategy. A results-based financing (RBF) initiative in Madhya Pradesh, India-called Mukti-introduced an intensive nutrition intervention, including home visits, counseling, food basket distribution, and assistance in obtaining government benefits. Phase 1 of the program (Dhar District), implemented by ChildFund India (ChildFund) and funded by USAID, coincided with the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Under an RBF reimbursement scheme, ChildFund was paid based on treatment retentio

Timing of regional analgesia in elderly patients with blunt chest-wall injury.

BACKGROUND: Rib fractures represent a typical injury pattern in older people and are associated with respiratory morbidity and mortality. Regional analgesia modalities are adjuncts for pain management, but the optimal timing for their initiation remains understudied. We hypothesized that early regional analgesia would have similar outcomes to late regional analgesia. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program database from 2017 to 2019. We included patients ≥65 years old admitted with blunt chest wall trauma who received regional a

Stereoptic serious games as a visual rehabilitation tool for individuals with a residual amblyopia (AMBER trial): a protocol for a crossover randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is the most common developmental vision disorder in children. The initial treatment consists of refractive correction. When insufficient, occlusion therapy may further improve visual acuity. However, the challenges and compliance issues associated with occlusion therapy may result in treatment failure and residual amblyopia. Virtual reality (VR) games developed to improve visual function have shown positive preliminary results. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of these games to improve vision, attention, and motor skills in patients with residual amblyop

Design of the PERSPECTIVE study: PERsonalized SPEeCh Therapy for actIVE conversation in Parkinson's disease (randomized controlled trial).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of personalized and home-based speech therapy on quality of life, intelligibility, and social participation for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) who have a reduced intelligibility of speech. BACKGROUND: Speech problems in PD have a profound negative impact on social interaction and quality of life. Evidence for speech therapy in PD is growing, but more work remains needed to explore its full potential. Efficacy exists for highly intensive standardized speech treatment programs, but not all patients can comply with this rather intense intervention,

An evaluation of a combined psychological and parenting intervention for HIV-positive women depressed in the perinatal period, to enhance child development and reduce maternal depression: study protocol for the Insika Yomama cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The combination of poverty, HIV and depression in the perinatal period represents a major public health challenge in many Southern African countries. In some areas, up to a third of HIV-positive women experience perinatal depression. Perinatal depression is associated with negative effects on parenting and key domains of child development including cognitive, behavioural and growth, especially in socio-economically disadvantaged communities. Several studies have documented the benefits of psychological interventions for perinatal depression in low- and middle-income countries, but

The Comprehensive Post-Acute Stroke Services (COMPASS) study: design and methods for a cluster-randomized pragmatic trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients discharged home after stroke face significant challenges managing residual neurological deficits, secondary prevention, and pre-existing chronic conditions. Post-discharge care is often fragmented leading to increased healthcare costs, readmissions, and sub-optimal utilization of rehabilitation and community services. The COMprehensive Post-Acute Stroke Services (COMPASS) Study is an ongoing cluster-randomized pragmatic trial to assess the effectiveness of a comprehensive, evidence-based, post-acute care model on patient-centered outcomes. METHODS: Forty-one hospitals in

The prevalence of pain and its relationship to falls, fatigue, and depression in a cohort of older people living in the community.

AIM: To examine the relationship of the pain severity scores with demographic variables (age, gender, and ethnicity) and with the frequency of falls, fatigue, and depression in a very large New Zealand sample of people over 65 years assessed using the Home Care International Residential Assessment Instrument. BACKGROUND: Pain is reported to be highly prevalent in older people yet it is poorly correlated with tissue damage. There is convincing evidence that it is related to depression and some evidence of its relationship with fatigue and falls. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study examini

Stroke Prevention Rehabilitation Intervention Trial of Exercise (SPRITE) - a randomised feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: The value of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) after a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke is untested despite these conditions sharing similar pathology and risk factors to coronary heart disease. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a trial of an adapted home-based CR programme, 'The Healthy Brain Rehabilitation Manual', for patients following a TIA/minor stroke, participants' views on the intervention and, to identify the behaviour change techniques (BCTs) used. METHODS: Clinicians were asked to identify patients attending the Ulster Hospital, Belfast withi

Does subtype matter? Assessing the effects of maltreatment on functioning in preadolescent youth in out-of-home care.

OBJECTIVES: Attempts to understand the effects of maltreatment subtypes on childhood functioning are complicated by the fact that children often experience multiple subtypes. This study assessed the effects of maltreatment subtypes on the cognitive, academic, and mental health functioning of preadolescent youth in out-of-home care using both "variable-centered" and "person-centered" statistical analytic approaches to modeling multiple subtypes of maltreatment. METHODS: Participants included 334 preadolescent youth (ages 9-11) placed in out-of-home care due to maltreatment. The occurrence and
