Wound infection caused by Staphylococcus arlettae: a case report and metal characterization.

BACKGROUND: Retained metallic foreign bodies can lead to implant-associated wound infections through bacterial colonization and biofilm formation. We report a case of a wound infection associated with a retained metallic fragment caused by Staphylococcus arlettae (S. arlettae) and evaluate the organism's early biofilm formation on common implant metals. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old man sustained a crush injury to his right hand and forearm, resulting in extensive soft-tissue damage and vascular injury. Emergency surgical management included meticulous debridement and vascular reconstructi

Long-term safety and efficacy of intracortical microstimulation in humans.

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of somatosensory cortex can restore a sense of touch to people with spinal cord injury. In this early feasibility clinical trial (NCT01894802), we evaluated the safety, efficacy, and longevity of ICMS because there is a paucity of such long-term studies in humans. This information is crucial to the development of clinical neuromodulation devices, particularly for restoring touch, hearing, and vision. ICMS was delivered to five participants with spinal cord injury who were each implanted with two Blackrock NeuroPort microelectrode arrays in the hand represe

Pulmonary effects of remote ischemic preconditioning in a porcine model of ventilation-induced lung injury.

BACKGROUND: One-lung ventilation (OLV) may result in lung injury due to increased mechanical stress and tidal recruitment. As a result, a pulmonary inflammatory response is induced. The present randomized, controlled, animal experiment was undertaken to assess the effects of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIP) on diffuse alveolar damage and immune response after OLV. METHODS: Fourteen piglets (26 ± 2 kg) were randomized to control (n = 7) and RIP group (n = 7). For RIP, a blood pressure cuff at hind limb was inflated up to 200 mmHg for 5 min and deflated for another 5 min, this being done f

Danshensu accelerates angiogenesis after myocardial infarction in rats and promotes the functions of endothelial progenitor cells through SDF-1α/CXCR4 axis.

The present study was performed to investigate the potential role of Danshensu in therapeutic angiogenesis in ischemic myocardium and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) function. The rat model of myocardial infarction (MI) injury was induced by left anterior descending coronary artery ligation for 14 days. Danshensu significantly alleviated myocardial ischemia injury by ameliorating left ventricular function and reducing infarct size. Furthermore, Danshensu potentiated post-ischemia neovascularization as evidenced by increased microvessel density in infarction boundary zone, as well as the ex

Enterovirus 71 infection induces pyroptotic brain injury via synergistic activation of classical inflammasome and viral gasdermin D cleavage.

UNLABELLED: Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a viral pathogen responsible for causing hand, foot, and mouth disease, which can lead to severe neurological complications. This study aims to elucidate the pyroptosis mechanism underlying brain injury induced by EV71 infection. EV71-infected BALB/c suckling mice exhibited characteristic symptoms, including weight loss, lethargy, and limb weakness. Notably, elevated levels of the inflammatory proteins IL-1β and IL-18 were detected in the brain tissue of the infected mice. Research findings indicate that EV71 infection activates the NLRP3 inflammasome, resu

The effect of probiotic treatment on elderly patients with distal radius fracture: a prospective double-blind, placebo-controlled randomised clinical trial.

Probiotic treatment has been shown to improve bone formation, increase bone mass density and prevent bone loss. We aimed to assess the effect of probiotic treatment on functional recovery in elderly patients with a distal radius fracture. A total of 417 elderly patients with an acute distal radius fracture were enrolled in this double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial. They were randomised to receive skimmed milk containing either a commercial probiotic (Lactobacillus casei Shirota) or placebo daily for a period of 6 months after the fracture. Treatment outcomes were the DASH (disabiliti

Flexor pollicis longus tendon ruptures after palmar plate fixation of fractures of the distal radius.

Palmar plate fixation of distal radial fractures is becoming a standard treatment for this common injury. Ruptures of the extensor pollicis longus tendon have been reported in 8.6% of cases after this procedure. Although palmar plate fixation has also been associated with flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon problems, the majority of reported cases pre-date the use of newer anatomically precontoured locking plates. In this paper seven cases of FPL rupture are presented. This complication does not appear to be unique to one type of implant. The possible aetiologies for FPL ruptures are discussed

Traumatic dislocations of the distal carpal row.

13 patients who sustained high-energy crush or blast injury of the carpal bones were reviewed after a mean follow-up period of 30 months. These complex injuries resulted in unusual disruptions of the distal carpal row and adjacent metacarpals. Frequent involvement of the carpometacarpal (CM) joints and violation of the proximal carpal row were also demonstrated. Nine were open injuries, with the majority accompanied by significant soft tissue damage. Treatment included either closed reduction or open reduction and Kirschner wire fixation, and soft tissue procedures as indicated. In this series
