Outcomes Following Surgical Interventions for Isolated Lunotriquetral Interosseous Ligament Injuries: A Systematic Review.

Ulnar-sided wrist pain can be attributed to various bony and ligamentous structures. The purpose of this review is to compare outcomes following surgical interventions for isolated lunotriquetral (LT) interosseous ligament injuries in adults. We assessed 202 procedures from 9 retrospective case series studies of low to moderate quality based on the Structured Effectiveness Quality Evaluation Scale. The comparative outcomes (ie, range of motion, pain, strength, quality of life, complications, return to work, and patient satisfaction) were aggregated and categorized under arthrodesis, capsulodes

Evaluation of Sympathetic Response in Offsprings of Hypertensive and Normotensive Parents.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances of the autonomic nervous system play a crucial role in the pathogenesis and clinical course of many diseases. Sympathetic response is an exaggerated response to stress. Studies have shown that enhanced sympathetic response to stress is an indication of prehypertensive states. Young offspring of hypertensive parents are a good model for assessing sympathetic reactivity prior to clinical hypertension. The aim of this study is to compare the sympathetic response in normotensive offspring of both hypertensive and normotensive parents. METHODS: 100 young normotensives, non

Application of SDOC Cut Points for Low Muscle Strength for Recovery of Walking Speed After Hip Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is often conceptualized as a precursor to loss of mobility, but its effect on recovery of mobility after a hip fracture is unknown. We determined the prevalence of low muscle strength (weakness) after hip fracture using putative sarcopenia metrics (absolute grip strength, and grip strength normalized to body mass index, total body fat, arm lean mass, and weight) identified by the Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC). METHODS: We examined two well-characterized hip fracture cohorts of community-dwelling older adults from the Baltimore Hip Studies (BHS).

Sarcopenia Definition: The Position Statements of the Sarcopenia Definition and Outcomes Consortium.

OBJECTIVES: To develop an evidence-based definition of sarcopenia that can facilitate identification of older adults at risk for clinically relevant outcomes (eg, self-reported mobility limitation, falls, fractures, and mortality), the Sarcopenia Definition and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) crafted a set of position statements informed by a literature review and SDOC's analyses of eight epidemiologic studies, six randomized clinical trials, four cohort studies of special populations, and two nationally representative population-based studies. METHODS: Thirteen position statements related to the

Role of gait speed and grip strength in predicting 10-year cognitive decline among community-dwelling older people.

BACKGROUND: The gait speed and handgrip strength represented the core determinants of physical frailty and sarcopenia, which were reported to be associated with cognitive impairment and decline. Different physical measures might differentially affect cognitive changes, such as higher-level cognitive change and global cognitive decline. This study examined the differential associations of gait speed and handgrip strength with 10-year cognitive changes among community-dwelling older people. METHODS: Participants aged 60 years and over living in the community were invited for study. Gait speed a

The Copenhagen Sarcopenia Study: lean mass, strength, power, and physical function in a Danish cohort aged 20-93 years.

BACKGROUND: Despite no international consensus on the diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia, low lean mass, muscle strength, and physical function are important risk factors for disability, frailty, and mortality in older individuals, as well as in a wide range of patients with muscle loss. Here, we provide a population-based reference material of total and regional lean body mass, muscle strength/power parameters, and physical function in a healthy cohort of Danish men and women across the lifespan. METHODS: Volunteers aged 20-93 years from the Copenhagen City Heart Study were invited to establ

The Effect of Vitamin D Deficiency Correction on the Outcomes in Women After Carpal Tunnel Release.

PURPOSE: Studies suggest that vitamin D supplementation improves myelination and recovery after nerve injuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether correction of vitamin D level leads to better surgical outcomes in women with both carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and vitamin D deficiency. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 84 vitamin D-deficient women with CTS who underwent carpal tunnel release and then received daily vitamin D supplementation of 1,000 IU vitamin D for 6 months. We also reviewed 35 control patients who were vitamin D-nondeficient at baseline and thus did not rece

Changes in Central Motor Conduction Time and Its Implication on Dysfunction of Distal Upper Limb in Distal-Type Cervical Spondylotic Amyotrophy.

PURPOSE: Distal-type cervical spondylotic amyotrophy (CSA) is an uncommon syndrome associated with cervical spondylosis. The pathogenic mechanism of distal-type CSA is still unclear. The aim of the current study was to analyze central motor conduction time (CMCT) in the cases with distal-type CSA and to investigate the role of cervical cord compressive injury in the distal-type CSA. METHODS: Both 28 cases with distal-type CSA and 21 healthy subjects accepted CMCT measures, motor unit number estimation, handgrip strength examination, and magnetic resonance imaging evaluation. RESULTS: In this

Adventitial cysts of the radial artery are joint connected.

Volar radial wrist masses are common. Adventitial cysts of the radial artery are rarely reported and poorly understood. We describe a case series of adventitial cysts in association with the radial artery and detail their pathophysiology and treatment. We conducted an Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective review of patients treated at our institution from 1997 to 2018. Twelve patients were identified. Presenting symptoms typically included pain and swelling over the volar radial wrist. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated tubular, cystic lesions within the

Hepatic encephalopathy impacts the predictive value of the Fried Frailty Index.

Frailty is increasingly recognized as a predictor of poor outcomes in solid organ transplantation. The most widely utilized frailty tool, the Fried Frailty Index (FFI), includes patient-reported exhaustion, weight loss, and physical activity as well as measured walk speed and handgrip. Although hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is common among liver transplant candidates, data are lacking regarding its impact on the interpretation of frailty. We prospectively enrolled 685 patients with cirrhosis during their transplant evaluation, following them until death or transplantation. Our cohort was aged 54

Midterm Outcomes of the Use of a Spherical Ulnar Head Prosthesis for Failed Sauvé-Kapandji Procedures.

PURPOSE: The use of a spherical ulnar head prosthesis (UHP) for the treatment of symptomatic radioulnar convergence after Sauvé-Kapandji (SK) procedure has shown promising results in the short term. This study aims to evaluate the midterm outcome of the original cohort of patients treated with this technique. METHODS: Seventeen patients with unstable ulnar stumps confirmed both clinically and radiographically were studied. The etiology for the initial SK procedure included posttraumatic distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) incongruity, primary DRUJ arthrosis, and dysplastic DRUJ. Fourteen of the 17

Which surgery should be offered for carpal tunnel syndrome in a patient who was previously treated for recurrence on the contralateral side? Preliminary study of 13 patients with the Canaletto® implant.

There are no published studies on the management of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients who have already been operated for recurrent CTS on the contralateral side. The aim of this study was to evaluate 13 patients with CTS who underwent primary release using a Canaletto® implant. The 13 patients had all been operated for recurrent CTS previously. On the contralateral side, they all had subjective signs, and two of them already had complications. All were operated with the Canaletto® implant according to Duché's technique, in a mean of 20minutes. After a mean 19.3-month follow-up, paresthesia

No long-term risk of wrist osteoarthritis due to subchondral haematomas in distal radial fractures.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study of distal radius fractures was to determine if a subchondral haematoma in an unfractured compartment predicts secondary osteoarthritis. METHODS: In 1995-1997, 41 patients, 22 women, a median age of 41 years (20-57 years) with a displaced distal radius fracture underwent diagnostic wrist arthroscopy in addition to the fracture treatment. In 12 patients (7/12 women), subchondral haematomas were identified in a joint compartment not involved in the fracture. RESULTS: At 13-15 years, 37 patients were still alive. Twenty-eight patients attended the follow-up

Multisession, noninvasive closed-loop neuroprosthetic control of grasping by upper limb amputees.

Upper limb amputation results in a severe reduction in the quality of life of affected individuals due to their inability to easily perform activities of daily living. Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) that translate grasping intent from the brain's neural activity into prosthetic control may increase the level of natural control currently available in myoelectric prostheses. Current BMI techniques demonstrate accurate arm position and single degree-of-freedom grasp control but are invasive and require daily recalibration. In this study we tested if transradial amputees (A1 and A2) could control
