Understanding Community Perspectives on Staphylococcus aureus Disease and Prevention in the White Mountain Apache Tribal Community in Arizona.

Staphylococcus aureus (Staph) infections are a pressing health concern in the White Mountain Apache (WMA) Tribal community, where invasive Staph infection rates far exceed those in the general U.S. population. This study explored community perspectives to guide culturally tailored education and prevention strategies. We conducted 42 in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with healthcare providers, traditional practitioners, and community members. Thematic analysis showed that participants had familiarity with the term "MRSA" (methicillin-resistant Staph), although many did not recogni

Breaking chains of tobacco: empowering African American churches in West Virginia for a healthier future.

Across West Virginia, tobacco use continues to be a significant public health challenge. Specifically, tobacco use is linked to high poverty across the state and disproportionately affects African Americans. A faith-based tobacco prevention network was formed to address these concerns and increase education and cessation. The West Virginia African American Tobacco Prevention Network (WVAATPN) was formed in 2021 and since then has expanded its reach across the state, involving 22 congregations. The Network's model includes annual training for lay leaders on various tobacco-related topics, tailo

Factors Associated with Non-Fatal Strangulation Victimization in Intimate Relationships: A Meta-Analysis.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health crisis across the globe, and one particular act of IPV, non-fatal strangulation, warrants serious attention. Non-fatal strangulation is a risk factor for intimate partner homicide (IPH) and can create long-term negative mental and physical health consequences. In this meta-analysis, we sought to examine factors associated with non-fatal strangulation victimization among women to help inform education and assessment efforts. Using database searches and Boolean search terms, a total of 16 studies met the inclusion criteria. A total of 16 factors

How primary carers, physicians, health education professionals, and others see or understand the subject of menstruation in women with intellectual disability (ID) is rooted in the socio-cultural context and in the socio-economic structures in which all of them live. The aim of this study was to explore how parents of young females with ID and special education professionals perceive and experience menstrual hygiene management, which coping strategies are applied; and what triggers the performance of a hysterectomy. A qualitative focus group study design was conducted with 69 parents and 11 sp

Varicella vaccine uptake and associated factors in children in Hong Kong.

Varicella is a common and highly contagious childhood disease which impacts the public worldwide. Hong Kong children can only be vaccinated against the disease in private practice. The varicella vaccination rate of local children in preschool is uncertain. Therefore a cross-sectional kindergarten-based parent-administered questionnaire survey was conducted in Hong Kong during 2012. Twelve kindergartens were randomly selected from a complete school list from the Education Bureau of Hong Kong. In total, 1285/1538 (83·6%) parents consented to join the study and completed the questionnaires. The o

The impact of the NSF for Diabetes on patient empowerment.

The National Service Framework (NSF) for Diabetes was developed by the UK government to tackle variations in care for patients with diabetes. This article critically analyses the impact of this policy and its effect on health care, focusing specifically on Standard 3 of the NSF. This standard discusses patient empowerment and involving patients in their own care. A number of education programmes have been set up to empower patients to better manage their diabetes, and two of these are explored in detail: Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) and Diabetes Education and Self-Management for O

Casual sex, extramarital sex, condom use and alcohol intake among heterosexual patients attending an STD clinic in Norway.

A study excluding homosexuals was performed to study casual sex, extramarital sex, the use of a condom with a casual sexual partner and the combination of alcohol intake and casual sex among patients attending a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Heterosexual patients (467) received a questionnaire, and 458 were included. Men reported more (94%) casual sexual partners than did women (76%). According to a multiple logistic regression analysis a condom was used significantly less frequently in "old" respondents, those having a permanent sexual partner, those having low education, t

Dermatologic health literacy in underserved communities: a case report of south Los Angeles middle schools.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of melanoma and other skin cancers has risen drastically in the United States.  As with most types of cancer, the prognosis and survival rates are significantly improved with early diagnosis, but dismal for patients who present with advanced disease.  It remains a fact that although melanoma is most common in Caucasian populations, ethnic minorities have a worse prognosis. Our hypothesis in this dermatologic health literacy study was that before necessary education, the required fund of knowledge with respect to skin cancer risk is lacking in several ethnic communitie

Digital Media for Health Outcomes: Evaluation Study of a Massive Online Open Course.

BACKGROUND: Digital media has emerged as a vital tool for the rapid dissemination of public health information to vast audiences. During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media-based health communication kept audiences informed, encouraged health-seeking behaviors, and helped address rampant misinformation. Factors associated with access channels and satisfaction with health science popularization among health lifestyle instructors.

BACKGROUND: Health Lifestyle Instructors (HLIs) play a pivotal role in community health promotion. The quality of and satisfaction with their own access to health science information may directly influence their work effectiveness, which in turn affect residents' health literacy and the outcomes of chronic disease prevention and control. This cross-sectional questionnaire-based study aimed to (1) explore factors associated with satisfaction with access channels for health science popularization among HLIs and (2) examine whether self-rated health status statistically mediated the association b
