Patient Perspectives on Declining to Participate in Home-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation: A MIXED-METHODS STUDY.

PURPOSE: A minority of eligible patients participate in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs. Availability of home-based CR programs improves participation in CR, yet many continue to decline to enroll. We sought to explore among patients the rationale for declining to participate in CR even when a home-based CR program is available. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods evaluation of reasons for declining to participate in CR. Between August 2015 and August 2017, a total of 630 patients were referred for CR evaluation during index hospitalization (San Francisco VA Medical Center). Three hund

[A discussion group for parents of children with a digestive stoma].

When a pathology is diagnosed at the birth of a child, the parents are confronted with an overwhelming life ordeal they have to face. A discussion group for these mothers and fathers of newborn babies who have needed a digestive stoma allows them to discuss their daily lives and share common concerns, to be reassured by the difficulties encountered, to gain confidence in the care provided and to project themselves into the future more serenely.

Knowledge, attitudes and behaviours in relation to skin cancer prevention.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of malignant melanoma is increasing faster than any other cancer, and it is now the second most common cancer in young adults. Most skin cancer prevention campaigns are based on the hypothesis that improved skin cancer knowledge leads to a change in sun-related behaviour. AIM: The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship of good skin cancer knowledge in a high knowledge group-medical students-with sun-related behaviours and tanning attitudes in Ireland. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on university students studying medicine in a single inst

RESULTS: The average (standard deviation [SD]) glycated hemoglobin of respondents with a learner's or a driver's license was 9.0% (SD, 1.9%) and 8.9% (SD, 1.9%), respectively (p=0.91). The proportions of adolescents with a learner's or a driver's license who almost alway

The present study was designed to determine factors associated with breast cancer screening awareness and practices of women in Addis Ababa. METHODS: A facility based cross-sectional study was conduct

[What speech therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapist need to know to become evidence-based practitioners: A cross-sectional study].

BACKGROUND: Today we are faced with changes in society and healthcare needs resulting from demographic transition. Among many other developments, the increasing complexity of healthcare creates new requirements for health professionals. To meet these requirements, such as evidence-based practice, professionally experienced therapists need additional training courses to acquire scientific competencies in addition to their professional competence. Certification courses for practitioners in the fields of speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy offer a way to achieve these scient

Investigation of strategies to improve concussion reporting in American football.

While research on sport-related concussion has increased dramatically over the past decade, research investigating concussion reporting is in its early stages. The purpose of this project was to assess concussion reporting and work with stakeholders to develop and assess strategies to improve reporting. We used a multi-site, repeated measures design with three NCAA Division I football programs, including 223 athlete participants. A modified community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach was used to develop intervention strategies (Fall 2017 season) with stakeholders designed to increas

Background. Concussion education for coaches is being increasingly recommended by leading sports organizations, yet the effectiveness of available materials has not often been assessed. This study evaluated the impact of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (2017) publication: "Concussion safety: What coaches need to know" (the "NCAA Fact Sheet for Coaches") on participants' concussion knowledge and safety supportive intentions. Method. NCAA head coaches (n = 779) were randomized to view the NCAA Fact Sheet for Coaches either before (intervention condition) or after (control conditio

Court personnel attitudes towards medication-assisted treatment: A state-wide survey.

BACKGROUND: Despite its efficacy, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is rarely available in the criminal justice system in the United States, including in problem-solving courts or diversionary settings. Previous studies have demonstrated criminal justice administrators' hostility towards MAT, especially in prisons and jails. Yet, few studies have examined attitudes among court personnel or compared beliefs among different types of personnel. Also, few studies have explored the relationship between MAT education/training and attitudes. Finally, few studies have directly compared attitudes tow

A survey of veterinarians' knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding an emerging disease: Coccidioidomycosis in Washington State.

Coccidioides immitis is an emerging fungal pathogen in Washington State (WA). While the geographical boundaries of C. immitis in WA have not been well characterized, human infections have resulted from exposure in the south-central region of the state. Since 2010, only one dog has been identified as a probable locally acquired animal case, despite pilot canine serological surveys from south-central WA revealing a 9.8% seroprevalence. On the suspicion that clinical animal cases may be underdiagnosed and/or underreported, we assessed WA veterinarians' knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding

Addressing the gender-knowledge gap in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency: challenges and opportunities.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehyrdgoenase (G6PD) deficiency is a common X-linked genetic trait, with an associated enzyme phenotype, whereby males are either G6PD deficient or normal, but females exhibit a broader range of G6PD deficiencies, ranging from severe deficiency to normal. Heterozygous females typically have intermediate G6PD activity. G6PD deficiency has implications for the safe treatment for Plasmodium vivax malaria. Individuals with this deficiency are at greater risk of serious adverse events following treatment with the only curative class of anti-malarials, 8-aminoquinolines, such as
