Tropical medicine and parasitology : official organ of Deutsche Tropenmedizinische Gesellschaft and of Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ)1991eng
International cooperation with Third World countries aims at reducing the high morbidity and mortality of the population to a tolerable level. The main health problems are caused by poverty. Thus, the range of diseases in tropical countries can be explained more readily by the socio-economic situation than solely by the climate. Health services, in Africa in particular, have had to reduce drastically their budgets in the last ten years and now have only approximately 1/1000th of the funds usually available in industrialised countries. High population growth reduces the resources available per

Alcohol abuse in the State of Minnesota has an impact on health, health care resources, and the economy. Alcohol abuse was related to 3.3 per cent (1,150) of deaths in Minnesota in 1983; of these, almost one-third were the result of fatal injuries. Alcohol abuse contributed to 12 per cent (33,909) of all years of potential life lost, two-thirds of which were secondary to injury. The estimated cost of alcohol abuse ranged from $1.4 billion to $2.1 billion, representing from 2.8 per cent to 4.3 per cent of all personal income of Minnesotans, from 32 per cent to 50 per cent of State expenditures,

Off-Label Drug Facts is a practitioner-oriented resource for information about specific drug uses that are unapproved by the US Food and Drug Administration. This new guide to the literature enables the health care professional or clinician to quickly identify published studies on off-label uses and determine if a specific use is rational in a patient care scenario. Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) has been a dynamic process from its inception in the 1980s. Essentially, it is a local, community-driven process that has grown and been refined as more communities adopt the methodology. The National Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (NFIMR) Program, a partnership between the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, serves as a resource for state and local communities implementing FIMR. In this issue of the Maternal and Child Health Journal, two articles by Baltay et al. and Grason and Misra

In 1995-2024, development of health people-ware as the most important resource of health care systems, actively discussed by world community under the WHO leadership. Since 2004, global health people-ware situation is characterized as being in crisis. The significant shortage of personnel is intensifying, first of all in countries with mean and low income. The situation is worsening because of uneven staff distribution, losses due to internal and international migration, shortcomings in staff training and management. About 70% of workers in health care and social care are women who badly need

SUMMARY: Large-scale screening and primary care diagnosis of osteoporosis are challenging due to the limited availability of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Therefore, predictive models for osteoporosis that do not rely on bone mineral density measurements are essential. Using routine health examination data and applying a consensus feature selection strategy, we constructed machine learning (ML)-based models and compared their performance across multiple dimensions.
PURPOSE: To develop a robust, low-cost, and interpretable framework for osteoporosis prediction based on readily availa

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus accounts for a significant share of morbidity and mortality in ages 30-70 years worldwide. In sub-Saharan Africa, diabetes care is often suboptimal for reasons ranging from health system weaknesses to patient illiteracy and non-compliance with recommendations. This study explores the potential costs and health benefits of optimising care for uncomplicated type 2 diabetes in Lagos State, Nigeria.
METHODS: Longitudinal data on medical care patterns and resource use (consultations, medications, diagnostics and lifestyle counselling) over a 1-year period were colle

BACKGROUND: Equitable distribution of medical facilities is a foundational element of urban health policy, particularly in rapidly urbanizing settings where spatial mismatches between healthcare supply and population demand can exacerbate health inequities. In China, despite national efforts to strengthen primary healthcare, the planning and distribution of medical facilities remain uneven, raising concerns about fairness, efficiency, and social justice in public service provision.
METHODS: We conducted a multi-city geospatial assessment across four major cities in Shandong Province (Jinan, Q

Malaria detection in Kilifi, County, primarily relies on intermittent active surveillance at healthcare facilities. To strengthen control of uncomplicated malaria, community health promoters (CHPs) were engaged in community health education, case detection, and treatment. This study examines lessons from integrating CHPs in community case management of malaria (CCMm). We use a mixed-method, concurrent cross-sectional design, to document stakeholder experiences of CCMm within piloted Community Health Units (CHUs) in Kilifi County. Quantitative analysis reviewed routinely collected malaria data

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide, with a rising burden. Patients are mainly older adults with limited self-management abilities due to low education and cognitive decline. Systematic health education is key to improving disease knowledge and self-management; however, current programs lack standardized content, delivery, and implementation.
OBJECTIVE: To systematically search, appraise, and synthesize the best evidence on COPD health education, providing healthcare professionals with a rational basis for improving patients'

Depression remains a critical mental health challenge among young people in low-resource settings, where financial, structural, and social barriers frequently limit care access. Digital approaches, including Tele-Support Psychotherapy (TSP), have emerged as promising, scalable alternatives to Standard in-person Mental Health Services (SMHS), yet evidence comparing their implementation remains limited. This study explored facilitators and barriers influencing the feasibility, acceptability and engagement of youths with TSP versus SMHS for depression treatment in Kampala District, Uganda. A qual

BACKGROUND: The E-MOTIVE bundle that includes objective measurement of early blood loss has been found to be effective in the early detection and management of PPH and the reduction of maternal mortality because of PPH. The aim of this study was to determine the perception of trained health professionals toward the E-MOTIVE bundle intervention for PPH as well as to explore perceived barriers to its implementation in Ethiopia.
METHODS: This mixed-methods study was conducted at Saint Paul's Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from February 1, 2024, to May 31, 2024. Data were collected from 80 he

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems impose a substantial social and economic burden in China. Yet population-based mental-health research has paid limited attention to literary literacy as a cultural resource embedded in everyday life. This study examines literary literacy as a multidimensional construct associated with adult mental health.
METHODS: We analysed 114,448 person-wave observations from six China Family Panel Studies waves (2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022). The reconstructed literary-literacy score combines two direct domains-reading participation and language-cognitive capa

PURPOSE: Late-stage diagnoses drive high rates of cervical and breast cancer mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where early detection efforts are typically small-scale. Rwanda's government-funded Women's Cancer Early Detection Program (WCEDP) integrates breast cancer early detection and cervical cancer screening and is being scaled nationally. We aimed to understand barriers and facilitators of WCEDP scale-up to inform program optimization and provide lessons for other LMICs.
METHODS: We conducted 23 in-depth interviews with clinicians, health facility leaders, nongovernmen
