We evaluated the modulatory effects of naringin on altered hepatic key enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism in high-fat diet/low-dose streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Oral treatment of naringin at a doses of 20, 40 and 80 mg/kg body weight to diabetic rats for 30 days resulted in a significant reduction in the levels of plasma glucose, blood glycosylated hemoglobin and increase in the levels of plasma insulin and blood hemoglobin. The altered activities of the hepatic key enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism such as hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphatase, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, glucose-6-pho

A 34-year-old male patient, who had fallen from a balcony suffering liver injury, underwent emergency laparotomy for right liver lobectomy and portal vein repair. For the first two hours of operation, the blood loss exceeded 12,000 ml, and his hemoglobin level dropped to 2.6 g x dl(-1) despite administration of 30 units of packed red cells (MAP). At this point, no more MAP was available in our hospital. Then we decided to initiate intraoperative blood salvage in order to minimize the further loss of hemoglobin. For 26,200 ml of the total blood loss, 1160 ml of packed red cells were restored fr

Iron deficiency (ID), defined as an insufficient supply of iron to the cells of the body after iron reserves have been exhausted, is the most prevalent single nutritional deficiency, affecting over 2,000 million people, mostly in the developing world. Infants, small children, adolescents and pregnant and fertile-age women are most vulnerable. Only about 50% of people with ID develop iron deficiency anemia (IDA), since this is a late manifestation of chronic ID. Based on the average daily iron requirement and on the rate of iron reutilization from red cell hemoglobin destruction, it can be esti

Complex iron compounds are being used as iron suppliers. Bioavailability of their iron was tested through several parameters. A biological iron prophylactic study in rats was simultaneously carried out with three of these iron complexes products: ferric orthophosphate, iron sodium EDTA and iron glycine chelate. Their iron biodisponibility was compared to that of ferrous sulfate. Five low iron diets were prepared according to AOAC method. Four of them were enriched to a level of 20 mg Fe/kg, with ferrous sulfate and the 3 iron complexes salts under study. These diets were offered to 5 groups of

Background: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and may contribute to hematological dysregulation and increased vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) burden. However, data from Sudan, a region with a substantial SCD burden, remain limited. This study investigated the prevalence and determinants of vitamin D deficiency and its association with hematological parameters and VOC frequency in Sudanese patients with SCD. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 50 patients with confirmed SCD attending a hematology outpatient clinic in S

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) may compromise auditory function through cochlear hypoxia and altered hemodynamics; however, longitudinal evidence linking IDA to tinnitus remains limited. This study investigated the association between IDA and new-onset tinnitus in female patients using a large-scale cohort design.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized the TriNetX electronic health records network (2010-2022) to identify female patients with and without IDA, focusing exclusively on women to minimize occupational noise exposure confounding. We defined IDA as hemoglobin bel

Background Iron deficiency (ID) is common in heart failure (HF) and is present in up to 80% of hospitalized patients. The majority of the studies have focused on describing patients with low ferritin levels. We studied functional iron deficiency (FID) in heart failure in a single-center observational study, with a focus on its relevance in the current era and its impact on outcomes in hospitalised patients. Methods Patients with HF and normal hemoglobin were considered and divided into 2 groups: absolute ID (serum ferritin < 100 mg/L) and FID (normal serum ferritin, i.e., 100-300 mg/L with low

In Bangladesh, groundwater, the principal source of drinking water, contains predominantly high levels of iron. Drinking groundwater is associated with good iron status in populations. Against this backdrop, iron supplementation is often associated with side effects, which reduces its intake compliance. However, the level of iron in groundwater is not consistent, and low levels exist in many areas of the country. In the present study, we examined the role of groundwater with a low concentration of iron in the prevention of anemia in Bangladeshi children. In 2018, a cross-sectional study was co

BACKGROUND: Patients with kidney failure undergoing dialysis often suffer from anemia. Iron deficiency, along with a shortage in erythropoietin, is a common cause. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients may have a different iron metabolism compared to hemodialysis (HD) patients. This study aims to compare both dialysis modalities regarding their differences in iron management.
METHODS: PubMed (MEDLINE) and Embase were screened for randomized controlled trials and observational studies including both patients on HD or PD with information on iron management. Outcomes for iron management for this sys

BACKGROUND: Skin carotenoid measurements are emerging as a valid and reliable indicator of fruit and vegetable intake and carotenoid intake. However, little is known about the extent to which skin carotenoid responsivity to dietary changes differs based on demographic and physiologic characteristics.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined potential effect modifiers of skin carotenoid and plasma carotenoid responses to a carotenoid-rich juice intervention.
METHODS: We leveraged data from 2 arms of a 3-site randomized controlled trial of a carotenoid-containing juice intervention (moderate dose = 6 o

BACKGROUND: Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a group of disorders that converge on excessive platelet aggregation in the microvasculature, leading to consumptive thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolysis and ischemic end-organ dysfunction. In predisposed patients, TMA can be triggered by many environmental factors. Glucocorticoids (GCs) can compromise the vascular endothelium. However, GC-associated TMA has rarely been reported, which may be due to the lack of awareness of clinicians. Given the high frequency of thrombocytopenia during GC treatment, particular attention should be given t

BACKGROUND: Home fortification of complementary foods with multiple micronutrient powders (MNPs) is recommended to reduce child anemia in resource-poor settings. However, evidence of program effectiveness in India to guide policies and programs is lacking.
OBJECTIVES: We implemented a large-scale intervention of MNPs in Bihar, India. The primary outcome was MNP consumption and change in hemoglobin concentration among children aged 6-18 mo between baseline and endline (12 mo). Secondary outcomes were change in child weight and length and infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices (initiat

Hepatic infarction is a rare and fatal complication associated with hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets syndrome. It can develop into fulminant liver failure and lead to death in 16% of cases. A 25-year-old woman, with unremarkable prenatal history, was sent to gynecological emergency unit for management of severe preeclampsia at 30 weeks and 4 days of pregnancy. Initial laboratory studies revealed aspartate aminotransferase at 290 U/L, alanine aminotransferase at 193 U/L and a normal value of hemoglobin, platelets and the prothrombin time. Behind the persistence of high blood

INTRODUCTION: Among the most useful biological examinations in common medical practice, blood count is the most prescribed. The reference intervals of the hematological parameters of this examination are of major importance for clinical orientations and therapeutic decisions. In Morocco, the reference values used by the laboratories of medical biology and used by doctors are ones collected from Caucasian and European individuals. These values could be different in the Moroccan population. Besides, reference intervals of the blood count specific to the various Moroccan regions are missing. We d

BACKGROUND: The health of an individual is known to vary in different countries, in the same country at different times, and in the same individuals at different ages. This means that the condition of individuals must be related to or compared with reference data. Determination of a reference range for the healthy term newborn is clinically important in terms of various complete blood count parameters. The purpose of this study was to establish a local reference range for full blood count parameters in neonatal cord plasma in Hilla, Babil, Iraq.
METHODS: A total of 220 mothers and their neona

OBJECTIVE: Many pediatric healthcare providers believe that capillary refill time is a measure of perfusion and cardiac output in children. Despite its widespread use, there are no studies examining the relationship of capillary refill time to cardiac output in noncritically ill children. This study examined the inter-rater reliability of capillary refill time and its relationship to hemoglobin and with cardiac output in pediatric patients undergoing cardiac catheterization.
DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
SETTING: Tertiary care pediatric hospital.
