PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Both column fractures, defined as an acetabular fracture with no articular fragment in connection with the axial skeleton account for approximately 20% of all acetabular fractures. The typical type of a both column acetabular fracture is the C1.2 fracture with a multifragmentary anterior column fracture extending to the iliac crest and a large posterior column fragment in more than half of the patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The analysis of 135 surgically treated patients with both column fractures showed that more than half of these patients had associated injuries. The

CASE: A 20-year-old military recruit presented with pain in his left hip. He was referred by the military hospital for osteonecrosis of the femoral head in both hip joints. Plain radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging showed a marked collapse in the left femoral head; however, the patient was diagnosed as having subchondral fatigue fractures of the femoral head (SFFFH) after a thorough review of previous sequential images. Arthroscopic debridement and labral repair were performed. At 3 years after surgery, the patient was symptom-free and second-look hip arthroscopy revealed the articular

The most common cause of hip pain is osteoarthritis, which when combined with rheumatoid arthritis accounts for 90% of all hip pain diagnoses. Other conditions of the joint include fractures, synovitis, and avascular necrosis. There are three major conditions that mimic hip disease: nerve root pressure syndrome, trochanteric bursitis, and vascular insufficiency. Laboratory studies are often of little value for diagnosis. Careful examination and an awareness of possible mimicking and concomitant conditions can be more helpful. Treatment of hip disease should be conservative as long as the patie

Diseases of the hip are significant public health problems. Fractures and osteoarthrosis of the hip are common in older age-groups, while congenital dislocation of the hip, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, and slipped epiphysis affect a certain proportion of infants, children, and adolescents. The distribution of these five common hip diseases in the population is reviewed, aetiological hypotheses are discussed, and gaps in knowledge identified. Particular attention is focused on the roles of mechanical stress and hormones, since there is evidence for the involvement of one or both of these factors

Vertebral fractures are one of the most common fractures associated with skeletal fragility and can cause as much morbidity as hip fractures. However, the epidemiology of vertebral fractures differs from that of osteoporotic fractures at other skeletal sites in important ways, largely because only one quarter to one-third of vertebral fractures are recognized clinically at the time of their occurrence and otherwise require lateral spine imaging to be recognized. This article first reviews the prevalence and incidence of clinical and radiographic vertebral fractures in populations across the gl

BACKGROUND: Cataract extraction with intraocular lens insertion (CEIOL) is among the most frequently performed surgeries in the United States and is indicated for individuals with age-related cataracts causing visual impairment. The association between CEIOL and falls and hip fractures has been described, but there is a paucity of literature describing the association between CEIOL and various other common morbidity and mortality-increasing age-related traumatic injuries.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized TriNetX, a health database, to access de-identified electronic medical r

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Increased calcitriol synthesis in sarcoid granulomas with subsequent hypercalcaemia and hypercalciuria can affect bone metabolism in patients with sarcoidosis. Multiple factors can increase the fracture risk in patients with sarcoidosis. This study aimed to evaluate a 10-year osteoporotic and a 10-year hip fracture risk and to analyse factors affecting fracture risk for patients with newly diagnosed sarcoidosis compared to an age- and gender-matched control group from a real-world setting.
METHODS: The cross-sectional study included 171 patients with a histologically verif

AIMS: Fracture of the odontoid process (OP) in the elderly is associated with mortality rates similar to those of hip fracture. The aim of this study was to identify variables that predict mortality in patients with a fracture of the OP, and to assess whether established hip fracture scoring systems such as the Nottingham Hip Fracture Score (NHFS) or Sernbo Score might also be used as predictors of mortality in these patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients aged 65 and over with an acute fracture of the OP from two hospitals. Data collected included demo

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop a tool in identifying traumatized children at low risk of pelvic fracture and to determine the sensitivity of this low-risk model for pelvic fractures. We hypothesized that the proportion of children without predictors with pelvic fracture is less than 1%.
METHODS: This is a retrospective trauma registry analysis of previously healthy children 1 year to 17 years old presenting to the pediatric emergency department with blunt trauma. Postulated predictors of pelvic fracture on radiograph or computed tomography included pain/abnormal examination result of

ABSTRACT: Anterior hip dislocation is common in younger adults and is the result of severe, high energy trauma such as high-velocity motor vehicle accidents or falls from great heights. A similar mechanism of injury would cause a femur neck fracture in older patients. Of these, open anterior hip dislocations are extremely rare and are usually associated with other soft tissue and bony injuries. We report a case of an open anterior hip dislocation with normal neurovascular status in a third world setting.
KEY WORDS: trauma, open anterior, dislocation, hip, femoral head, osteonecrosis.

BACKGROUND: Fragility fracture is associated with an increased risk of mortality, but mortality is not part of doctor-patient communication. Here, we introduce a new concept called 'Skeletal Age' as the age of an individual's skeleton resulting from a fragility fracture to convey the combined risk of fracture and fracture-associated mortality for an individual.
METHODS: We used the Danish National Hospital Discharge Register which includes the whole-country data of 1,667,339 adults in Denmark born on or before January 1, 1950, who were followed up to December 31, 2016 for incident low-trauma

BACKGROUND: Exposure of the acetabular component during revision total hip arthroplasty is often difficult and stems are often difficult to remove. Polished and tapered cemented stems are easily removed and can be easily reconstructed by either cement-in-cement or in-cement technique. This study was a retrospective review of the medium-term outcomes of revision total hip arthroplasty conducted with the Exeter stem fixed by cement-in-cement or in-cement method in four institutions.
METHODS: This study included hips (n = 103) reconstructed by cement-in-cement or in-cement technique on the femor

INTRODUCTION: There is little data regarding timing of index dislocation in patients who undergo primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and subsequent risk of redislocation and revision.
METHODS: Between 1992 and 2013, 21,490 primary THAs were performed at a single institution. 189 patients (190 hips) had a first episode of dislocation within one year of index surgery (0.9 %). 32 patients (32 hips) were excluded for the following reasons: complex THA secondary to fracture malunion, Crowe III/IV developmental hip dysplasia, periprosthetic fracture, prior hip surgery, incomplete information, and

We retrospectively reviewed 15 patients (24 hips) on chronic renal dialysis who underwent hip arthroplasty between 1970 and 1990. The average age at surgery was 39 years; the average follow-up was 8 years (range, 1-19 years). All follow-up of less than 5 years relates to those patients who died. Of these 24 hips, 14 (58%) failed or were failing due to loosening; the average time to revision was 7 years (range, 1.5-14 years). A complicated course was experienced in 16 hips (66%), primarily related to medical difficulties. There was one perioperative death. The following orthopedic complications

Traumatic premature fusion of the triradiate cartilage is a rare complication of fractures of the pelvis in children. Only five cases were reported, leading eventually to subluxation of the hip. A case of premature closure of the triradiate cartilage where the injury occurred at the age of four years is reported. Severe hip subluxation with marked shallow acetabulum and widening of its medial wall was noted at the age of 15 years. Intrapelvic epiphysiodesis of the triradiate cartilage, without disturbing the hip joint, was performed in young rabbits, leading to thickening of the acetabular med

INTRODUCTION: Fragility fractures (FF) are associated with increased morbidity and mortality and reflect a dramatic turning point in the life of older adults. The scientific discourse is dominated by proximal femoral fractures, but FF affect multiple parts of the body and often precede hip fractures. Orthogeriatric co-management has multiple shown to improve patient's outcome. We hypothesize that all geriatric patients with FF benefit from orthogeriatric co-management.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated all patients over 70 years with FF (hip joint, periprosthetic, spine, pel

Observations of elastic instability of trabecular bone cores supported the analysis of cortical thickness for predicting bone fragility of the hip in people over 60 years of age. Here, we falsified the hypothesis that elastic instability causes minimal energy fracture by analyzing, with a micrometric resolution, the deformation and fracture behavior of entire femora. Femur specimens were obtained from elderly women aged between 66 - 80 years. Microstructural images of the proximal femur were obtained under 3 - 5 progressively increased loading steps and after fracture. Bone displacements, stra

BACKGROUND: Population-based administrative data have been used to study osteoporosis-related fracture risk factors and outcomes, but there has been limited research about the validity of these data for ascertaining fracture cases. The objectives of this study were to: (a) compare fracture incidence estimates from administrative data with estimates from population-based clinically-validated data, and (b) test for differences in incidence estimates from multiple administrative data case definitions.
METHODS: Thirty-five case definitions for incident fractures of the hip, wrist, humerus, and cl
