Improving the chipping resistance of pre-sintered zirconia white-bodies.

OBJECTIVES: The high occurrence of fractures, cracking and chipping of zirconia pre-sintered blanks and blocks during machining decreases their yield and can transfer lifetime-limiting cracks to the final sintered restoration. This study has the objective of characterizing the mechanical and fracture properties of two zirconia compositions while varying temperature and time of pre-sintering, in order to assess the space for possible improvement. METHODS: We selected two typical granular powders with 3 mol% (3YSZ, Zpex®, Tosoh) or 5 mol% (5YSZ, Zpex Smile®, Tosoh) yttria-stabilized zirconia an

Effect of High Temperature Exposure and Laboratory Processing Techniques on the Diagnostic Performance of Dry Swabs for the Detection of African Swine Fever Virus.

One of the key surveillance strategies for the early detection of an African swine fever (ASF) incursion into a country is the sampling of wild or feral pig populations. In Australia, the remote northern regions are considered a risk pathway for ASF incursion due to the combination of high numbers of feral pigs and their close proximity to countries where ASF is present. These regions primarily consist of isolated arid rangelands with high average environmental temperatures. A specific objective of this study was to assess whether the exposure of swabs to the high temperatures that may be enco

Inconsistency of in vitro exsheathment triggers for gastrointestinal nematode parasites of sheep, cattle and deer.

Exsheathment is crucial in the transition from free-living to parasitic phase for most strongyle nematode species. A greater understanding of this process could help in developing new parasitic control methods. This study aimed to identify commonalities in response to exsheathment triggers (heat acclimation, CO2 and pH) in a wide range of species (Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus spp., Cooperia spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Chabertia ovina, and members of the subfamily Ostertagiinae) from sheep, cattle and farmed deer. The initial expectation of similarity in pH requirements amongst specie

HSP70 is upregulated after heat but not freezing stress in the freeze-tolerant cricket Gryllus veletis.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are well known to prevent and repair protein damage caused by various abiotic stressors, but their role in low temperature and freezing stress is not well-characterized in insects compared to other thermal challenges such as heat stress. Ice formation in and around cells is hypothesized to cause protein damage, yet many species of insects can survive freezing, suggesting HSPs may be an important mechanism in freeze tolerance. Here, we studied HSP70 in a freeze-tolerant cricket Gryllus veletis to better understand the role of HSPs in this phenomenon. We measured expre

Analyzing effect modifiers of the temperature-mortality relationship in the Paris region to identify social and environmental levers for more effective adaptation to heat.

Adaptation to heat is a major challenge for the Paris region (France). Based on fine-scale data for the 1,287 municipalities of the region over 2000-2017, we analyzed (time-serie design) the temperature-mortality relationship by territories (urban, suburban, rural), age (15-64 and ≥ 65) and sex, and explored how it was modified by vegetation and socio-economic indicators. Heat was associated with an increased mortality risk for all territories, age groups, sex, and mortality causes. Women aged 65 and over residing in the most deprived municipalities had a relative risk (RR) of deaths at 29.4 °

Efficacy of ETB-F01, Heat-Killed Akkermansia muciniphila Strain EB-AMDK19, in Patients with Respiratory Symptoms: A Multicenter Clinical Trial.

Respiratory symptoms are prevalent in the general population, and they are associated with a decline in lung function and increased mortality. The gut-lung connection suggests intestinal dysbiosis may impact lung diseases, with Akkermansia muciniphila showing promise in regulating extraintestinal diseases. However, its application in patients with respiratory symptoms lacks clinical trial evidence. In this randomized, double-blind trial, ETB-F01, containing heat-killed A. muciniphila strain EB-AMDK19, was compared with a placebo in patients experiencing respiratory symptoms for 4 to 12 weeks.

Early Pulmonary Fibrosis-like Changes in the Setting of Heat Exposure: DNA Damage and Cell Senescence.

It is well known that extreme heat events happen frequently due to climate change. However, studies examining the direct health impacts of increased temperature and heat waves are lacking. Previous reports revealed that heatstroke induced acute lung injury and pulmonary dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate whether heat exposure induced lung fibrosis and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to an ambient temperature of 39.5 ± 0.5 °C until their core temperature reached the maximum or heat exhaustion state. Lung fibrosis was observed in the lungs of heat-e

Carbon Dots with Integrated Photothermal Antibacterial and Heat-Enhanced Antioxidant Properties for Diabetic Wound Healing.

Diabetic wounds pose a persistent challenge due to their slow healing nature, primarily caused by bacterial infection and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced inflammation. In this study, carbon dots with synergistic antibacterial and antioxidant properties, referred to as AA-CDs, are developed specifically for diabetic wound healing using a straightforward solvothermal method. By utilizing cost-effective precursors like citric acid and ascorbic acid, AA-CDs are engineered to possess tailored functions of photothermal sterilization and ROS scavenging. The resulting AA-CDs demonstrat

Heating-mediated purification of active FGF21 and structure-based design of its variant with enhanced potency.

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) has pharmaceutical potential against obesity-related metabolic disorders, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Since thermal stability is a desirable factor for therapeutic proteins, we investigated the thermal behavior of human FGF21. FGF21 remained soluble after heating; thus, we examined its temperature-induced structural changes using circular dichroism (CD). FGF21 showed inter-convertible temperature-specific CD spectra. The CD spectrum at 100 °C returned to that at 20 °C when the heated FGF21 solution was cooled. Through loop swapping, the conn
