Halitosis has become a major concern, as it is the third most common reason for dental visits and affects individuals across all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Only a few limited studies have explored the prevalence and etiology of halitosis in the pediatric population. Therefore, the aim of this review was to identify the etiological factors influencing the widespread occurrence of halitosis in pediatric dentistry in order to guide therapy based on the identified causes, thereby improving children's quality of life. The etiology of halitosis is multifactorial; however, in most cases, halitos

Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are a major cause of morbidity worldwide and have been described as an important public health problem. The present study aimed to determine the un usual parasitic infection and identification of risk factors among 4-12years old school age children residing in lower dir district, Pakistan from 2018- 2019. Of the 400 children studied in which the overall prevalence rate for intestinal parasitic infections was found to be 71.75%. Children infected with single parasite accounted for 67.94% and 32.05% were detected with poly-parasitism. Shistosoma japonicum (

Patients with a psychotic disorder have certain symptoms, movement disorders resulting from the pharmacological effects of medication. Knowing about this is important to the patients' dental treatment. A very small group will present with delusions about teeth or the benevolent or malevolent intentions of the dentist. Negative symptoms are an important characteristic of schizophrenic psychoses, meaning the absence of normal behaviour. Patients neglect personal hygiene and their lives have hardly any structure. They do not concern themselves with appointments, daily routines and social expectat

Invasive fungal infections remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in neonates, especially preterm and very low birth weight infants. Most invasive fungal infections are due to Candida or Aspergillus species, and other fungi are increasingly reported and described. Appropriate identification and treatment are required to augment activity and reduce the toxicity of antifungal drugs. Successful use of antifungals in the vulnerable neonatal population is important for both prevention and treatment of infection. Strategies for prevention, including prophylactic antifungal therapy as w

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a serious complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transpl antation, which frequently affects the mouth. GVHD is the result of an immunological attack of donor-derived cells against the tissue of patients. Chronic oral GVHD can affect the mucosa and/or damage salivary glands and can cause sclerotic changes to the head and neck area. Patients can experience painful oral and gingival mucosa, dry mouth, taste changes and limited mouth opening. Due to painful mucosa and salivary glands, and limited mouth opening, performing oral hygiene and dental i

Candida species are common global opportunistic pathogens that could repeatedly and chronically cause oral mucosa infection and create an inflammatory environment, leading to organ dysfunction. Oral Candida infections may cause temporary or permanent damage to salivary glands, resulting in the destruction of acinar cells and the formation of scar tissue. Restricted function of the salivary glands leads to discomfort and diseases of the oral mucosa, such as dry mouth and associated infection. This narrative review attempts to summarize the anatomy and function of salivary glands, the associatio

The geographical and climatic conditions, hot and humid in Côte d'Ivoire, are favorable to the prolonged survival of leptospira in the environment. In this country, cases of human leptospirosis are underestimated and the wild reservoirs unknown. In this study, 16S rDNA PCR-sequencing and variable number of tandem repeats typing investigations were performed in kidneys collected from 60 grasscutters (Thryonomys swinderianus) around the city of Yamoussoukro, including 10 bred grasscutters and 50 bush meat grasscutters. One sample was positive for Leptospira borgptersenii and another one for Lept

Enteric fever is a foodborne infectious disease caused by Salmonella enterica serotypes Typhi and Paratyphi A, B and C. The high incidence in low income countries can increase the risk of disease in travelers coming from high income countries. Pre-travel health advice on hygiene and sanitation practices and vaccines can significantly reduce the risk of acquiring infections. Although the majority of the cases are self-limiting, life-threatening complications can occur. Delayed diagnosis and cases of infections caused by multi-drug resistant strains can complicate the clinical management and aff

Oropharyngeal cancer is in the sixth position of cancer incidence in the world (after colorectal, breast, prostate, bladder, and cervix uteri cancer). More than 90% of them are squamous cell carcinoma. This type of cancer can originate on the lip, oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx. The risk factors associated with oropharyngeal cancer are tobacco, alcohol, and poor oral hygiene. However, other conditions, such as infection with human papilloma virus (HPV) and oral dysbiosis, are gaining prominence. Pre-malignant and malignant lesions are related to diverse factors that can be monitored by the h

An outbreak of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium with closely related Multiple Locus Variable-number Tandem Repeat Analysis (MLVA) patterns was detected by routine surveillance by the Australian Capital Territory Health Protection Service in May 2018. The outbreak consisted of three cases in 2018 (MLVA 03-10-10-09-496) and one in 2016 (MLVA 03-10-09-09-496), who reported eating home-cooked eggs from the same local producer. Environmental investigations found significant problems with egg cleaning, hand hygiene and documentation of food safety procedures on farm. Environmental samples col

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is a condition which predominantly affects children and causes a spectrum of skin lesions. We present a case of a 2-month-old infant with complaints of fever and fragile blisters over the body. The mucosal areas were spared. The diagnosis of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome was reached on clinical grounds and culture report. The patient responded well to the treatment, which included an antibiotic (cloxacillin), an analgesic (paracetamol), and hydration with intravenous fluids. He was discharged after 8 days, with almost complete resolution of his skin

Cervicofacial actinomycosis is an invasive destructive infectious syndrome, caused by Gram-positive, branching filamentous bacteria, Actinomyces. Most of the cases are traced to an odontogenic source with periapical abscess and posttraumatic or surgical complications with poor hygiene and immunosuppression as contributing factors. Diagnosis is often delayed because of nonspecific and prolonged symptoms usually mimicking a malignant or a granulomatous lesion. Solitary or multiple abscesses and fistula formation across normal tissue planes accompany chronic draining lesions and may lead to invas

Throughout human history, pathogens transmitted through feces from person to person have caused substantial mortality. Over a century ago civil engineers in high income countries developed approaches to collect and remove feces from the environment that in communities with high incomes and strong governments markedly reduced the burden of enteric disease. These approaches, however, have not been successfully extended to impoverished communities in low income countries. Water/sanitation/hygiene professionals have attempted, with only limited success, to reduce fecal exposure and human disease i

In June 2016, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) was notified of a nonpregnant woman who sought treatment for a subjective fever and an itchy rash, which was described as maculopapular by her provider. Laboratory testing at the Maryland DHMH Laboratories Administration confirmed Zika virus infection. Case investigation revealed that the woman had not traveled to a region with ongoing transmission of Zika virus, but did have sexual contact with a male partner who had recently traveled to the Dominican Republic. The male partner reported exposure to mosquitoes while trav

Based on a paper by Conkle et al 2016, in which the authors use a descriptive epidemiological design to examine the relationship of premastication and other dietary behavioral variables to childhood diarrhea in the US, we address larger issues of "plausible causality" and the challenges involved in moving from epidemiological studies to public health policy. Drawing on examples from breastfeeding research and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) research, we discuss the following propositions: 1. Effective outcome analyses require simultaneous investigation of different, even contradictory, pa

We report the case of an 84-year-old man admitted to ICU with symptoms/signs occurring after upper respiratory airways disease. The upper respiratory condition consisting in an uvula oedema required an empiric anti-inflammatory and antibiotic therapy which masked the clinical features usually seen in the case of rickettsial infections, especially cutaneous rash. Although the patient subsequently presented unexplained cardiac and neurological involvement, the starting treatment interfered with the diagnostic process, resulting in a delayed diagnosis. Rickettsia and other conditions related with

Mathematical models of typhoid transmission were first developed nearly half a century ago. To facilitate a better understanding of the historical development of this field, we reviewed mathematical models of typhoid and summarized their structures and limitations. Eleven models, published in 1971 to 2014, were reviewed. While models of typhoid vaccination are well developed, we highlight the need to better incorporate water, sanitation and hygiene interventions into models of typhoid and other foodborne and waterborne diseases. Mathematical modeling is a powerful tool to test and compare diff

Perioprative infection has a significant impact on outcome of surgical patients. Anesthesiologists have roles in reducing infection by application of appropriate prophylactic measures. Hand hygiene is a prerequisite when contacting patients in the operating room. Bundled-preventive approaches should be applied during insertion of intravascular lines, specifically central venous lines. Application of appropriate skin preparation and/or dressings with antiseptics is important. Appropriate selection of antimicrobials depending on surgeries and patients' background, and avoidance of periopeative h

Temperomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis or hypo mobility involves fusion of the mandibular condyle to the base of the skull. Impairment of speech, difficulty in mastication, poor oral hygiene, rampant caries, and acute compromise of the airway pose a severe psychological burden on the tender minds of children. The treatment of TMJ ankylosis poses a significant challenge because of technical difficulties and a high incidence of recurrence. This report describes a case of 7-year-old with inability to open mouth, diagnosed with unilateral right bony TMJ ankylosis. The surgical approach consisted

Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia (LJSGH) is a recently described benign condition that affects the gingiva of children and young adults. Clinically distinctive, LJSGH presents as a localized area of erythema on the attached gingiva, with a subtly papillary surface architecture. The lesions are generally biopsied because of the lack of resolution with conservative oral hygiene therapeutic measures and esthetic concerns. The histopathology has a characteristic appearance of subtle papillary epithelial hyperplasia, acute inflammation, and numerous engorged capillary vascular spa
