Reproducibility of interictal EEG-fMRI results in patients with epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Combined electroencephalography (EEG) and functional MRI (EEG-fMRI) can be useful in the evaluation of epilepsy patients. The reproducibility of EEG-fMRI findings needs to be established to consider it as a clinically valuable method. We addressed the intrasubject reproducibility of EEG-fMRI and the possible superiority of higher magnetic field strength in patients who were scanned twice. METHODS: Fifteen patients were studied: Seven had one 1.5T and one 3T scan and eight had two 3T EEG-fMRI studies. Equal numbers of events of the same interictal epileptic discharge (IED) were includ

An automatic deformable registration method to evaluate parotid glands shrinkage during radiotherapy treatment in Tomotherapy.

The aim of this study is to provide a method to track the anatomical alterations of parotid glands during radiation treatment. The method we implemented is based on an intensity-based free-form deformable registration to realign the planning kilo-Voltage CT (kVCT) and the daily Mega-Voltage (MVCT) image sets and on an automatic contour propagation algorithm based on surface construction by triangular mesh. The accuracy of the method was evaluated through visual inspection and comparison with manual contours drawn by expert physicians. The uncertainties of automatic contours were similar to tho

Evaluation of intracranial stenoses and aneurysms with accelerated 4D flow.

The aim of this study was to evaluate intracranial arterial stenoses and aneurysms with accelerated time-resolved three-dimensional (3D) phase-contrast MRI or 4D flow. The 4D flow technique was utilized to image four normal volunteers, two patients with intracranial stenoses and two patients with intracranial aneurysms. In order to reduce scan time, parallel imaging was combined with an acquisition strategy that eliminates the corners of k-space. In the two patients with intracranial stenoses, 4D flow velocity measurements showed that one patient had normal velocity profiles in agreement with

Increased signal intensity of the cochlea on pre- and post-contrast enhanced 3D-FLAIR in patients with vestibular schwannoma.

INTRODUCTION: In the vestibular schwannoma patients, the pathophysiologic mechanism of inner ear involvement is still unclear. We investigated the status of the cochleae in patients with vestibular schwannoma by evaluating the signal intensity of cochlear fluid on pre- and post-contrast enhanced thin section three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR). METHODS: Twenty-eight patients were retrospectively analyzed. Post-contrast images were obtained in 18 patients, and 20 patients had the records of their pure-tone audiometry. Regions of interest of both cochleae (C) and of

Evaluation of normal prostate tissue, chronic prostatitis, and prostate cancer by quantitative perfusion analysis using a dynamic contrast-enhanced inversion-prepared dual-contrast gradient echo sequence.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify independent pharmacokinetic parameters for differentiation of prostate pathology. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with biopsy-proven prostate cancer (PSA: 1.4-16.1 ng/mL) underwent magnetic resonance imaging with a new dynamic contrast-enhanced, inversion-prepared dual-contrast gradient echo sequence (T1/T2*-weighted, 1.65 seconds temporal resolution) using a combined endorectal/body phased-array coil at 1.5 Tesla. Perfusion, blood volume, mean transit time, delay, and dispersion were calculated using a sequential 3-compartment model. Twenty-three patients u

A "twisting and bending" model-based nonrigid image registration technique for 3-D ultrasound carotid images.

Atherosclerosis at the carotid bifurcation resulting in cerebral emboli is a major cause of ischemic stroke. Most strokes associated with carotid atherosclerosis can be prevented by lifestyle/dietary changes and pharmacological treatments if identified early by monitoring carotid plaque changes. Registration of 3-D ultrasound (US) images of carotid plaque obtained at different time points is essential for sensitive monitoring of plaque changes in volume and surface morphology. This registration technique should be nonrigid, since different head positions during image acquisition sessions cause

The value of interictal diffusion-weighted imaging in lateralizing temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: A subgroup of patients with nonlesional temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) has no evidence of hippocampal sclerosis on standard temporal lobe protocol MRI. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether interictal diffusion-weighted imaging adds lateralizing information in patients with TLE with and without lateralizing conventional MRI. METHODS: We studied 22 patients (9 right, 13 left TLE) who had undergone temporal lobectomy and 18 control subjects. We measured hippocampal volumes on high- resolution coronal magnetization-prepared rapid gradient echo scans. Apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs)

New applications of planar image fusion in clinical nuclear medicine and radiology.

Fusion of multiple modalities has become an integral part of modern imaging methodology, especially in nuclear medicine where PET and SPECT scanning are frequently paired with computed tomography (CT). We have extended image fusion from the tomographic realm to planar imaging in 2 specific applications. In the first, we combine planar scintigraphic images with photographic images of the body part of interest, using a predetermined transformation of images between the frames of reference. This technique is especially helpful in "hot spot" imaging applications where minimal background activity m

[Diagnostic imaging for connective tissue diseases].

Guidelines and diagnostic algorithms for the introduction of diagnostic procedures for connective tissue diseases have not yet been established and standardized. Diagnosis is often based on the patients's typical history, clinical symptoms and specific laboratory profiles. The use of diagnostic imaging procedures is relevant for differential diagnosis, for the assessment of disease activity and organ involvement, for defining the prognosis and monitoring responses to therapy and side effects. Experience with these techniques and diagnostic procedures, their application, indications and analysi

[Technique and radiation dose of conventional X-rays and computed tomography of the sacroiliac joint].

Anterior-posterior (a.p.) or posterior-anterior X-rays of the sacroiliac joint, sometimes supplemented by a transverse view, have been the method of choice for diagnosis of patients suspected of having sacroiliitis. The sensitivity and specificity of conventional X-rays are relatively low, which can delay the diagnosis of sacroiliitis. Computed tomography (CT) is superior to conventional X-rays for diagnosis of sacroiliitis, but does emit a relatively higher dose of radiation. For this reason, particularly for females, CT should be optimized by employing semi-coronal planes which require a low

Evolving strategies for the management of non-palpable breast abnormalities.

Increased public and professional awareness has resulted in more women obtaining mammograms. As a result, the surgeon is often called on to diagnose and treat occult breast lesions. The development of new diagnostic modalities has changed the way such breast lesions are approached. Management decisions are made in the context of new pressures applied by the growing managed care imperative and increased mediocolegal exposure. In this review, we establish guidelines for the management of non-palpable breast abnormalities that place the welfare of the patient first.

Three-dimensional display of cardiac structures using reconstructed magnetic resonance imaging.

It is sometimes difficult to understand the three-dimensional (3D) relationship of cardiac and mediastinal structures despite advances in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques. We present a low-cost system for 3D reconstruction of the major mediastinal structures by processing the MR imaging data on a NeXT workstation. MR images of multisection, multiphase, spin-echo techniques stored in a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) data base were used for the reconstruction. The computer program obtained the contours of the multiple components of the mediastinal structures by the c

On the limitations of partial Fourier acquisition in phase-contrast MRI of turbulent kinetic energy.

PURPOSE: To investigate limitations of partial Fourier acquisition in phase-contrast MRI of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). METHODS: To assess the validity of partial Fourier reconstruction of TKE and phase images, computational fluid dynamics data of mean and turbulent velocities in a stenotic U-bend phantom was used. Partial Fourier acquisition with 75% k-space coverage was simulated and TKE data were reconstructed using zero-filling, homodyne reconstruction, and the method of projections onto convex sets (POCS). Results were compared to data from fully sampled k-space and 75% symmetric sam

Repeatability of an MRI protocol for generating habitats based on cellularity, perfusion, and hypoxia in a murine model of glioma.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia, cellularity, and vascularity are well-established as important drivers of tumor growth and treatment response. Diffusion weighted (DW-), dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic (DCE-), and oxygen enhanced (OE-) MRI techniques have been developed to quantitatively map these three characteristics. We have developed and implemented a multi-parametric MRI protocol to identify tumor subregions that share similar biological features or "habitats". METHODS: We performed test-retest DW-, DCE-, and OE-MRI measurements on Wistar rats bearing a C6 glioma (n = 24). MRI data was summarized

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound of histologically proven liver hemangiomas.

UNLABELLED: Differentiation of small and atypical hemangiomas from other hepatic masses using imaging methods can be difficult, especially in patients with underlying malignant disease. Therefore, contrast-enhanced ultrasound was assessed in patients with histologically confirmed hemangiomas with respect to contrast-enhancing kinetics and tumor characteristics. In 58 patients with indeterminate hepatic lesions demonstrated with at least 2 imaging methods (ultrasound/computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging), ultrasound-guided liver biopsy revealed hemangioma. In all patients a hepatic ne
