Short-term outcomes following gastrectomy for adenocarcinoma: Assessing the role of social determinants of health.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how social determinants of health (SDoH) impact short-term outcomes following gastrectomy for adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Patients with stages I-III gastric adenocarcinoma who underwent gastrectomy were identified in the National Cancer Database. Adjusted regression analyses identified SDoH (race, insurance, income, education) associated with length of stay (LOS), 30-day readmission, and 30-day mortality. RESULTS: Among 22,341 patients, the median age was 66 years and 68.5 % were White. Extended LOS was less likely among Black (OR = 0.75; 95 %CI:0.69-0.82), Hispanic

Bridging the Gap: Implementing cardiac rehabilitation programmes in pakistan's healthcare system.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a secondary prevention programme aimed at reducing the mortality and frequency of recurrent cardiac events and contributes to improvement in quality of life of the patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases (CVD). While the healthcare system around the world has revolutionized, provision of CR services is still lacking in its implementation. According to statistics, < 54% of the countries actually provide CR and this percentage drops at an alarming rate of about 8% and 28% in low and middle income countries (LICs/LMICs) respectively, even though the need of

Drivers of Overweight/Obesity in 4-11 Year Old Children of Australians and Immigrants; Evidence from Growing Up in Australia.

Despite high overweight/obesity rates in children of Australian immigrants, the risk factors are unknown. We investigated behavioural risk factors and their association with overweight/obesity in 4-11 year-old children by immigrant status. We conducted cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of 8 years data from the longitudinal study of Australian children. Immigrant children from low-and-middle-income-countries had higher overweight/obesity rates across all ages. These children had higher vegetables and sugar-sweetened-beverages intake, higher sedentary activities and lower organized-sport

Lean on me: effects of social support on low socioeconomic-status pregnant women.

This study identified how close relationships are related to low-income pregnant women's ability to cope and overall health. Previous research has shown that stress during pregnancy is related to long-term negative physical and psychological health outcomes for both the mother and the infant. Lower socioeconomic status has been related to higher morbidity and mortality across the lifespan. Women typically rely on close relationships for social support to help reduce stress. However, stress levels can be elevated when women engage in co-rumination. Co-rumination is defined as excessive problem

Dynamics of intestinal multidrug-resistant bacteria colonisation contracted by visitors to a high-endemic setting: a prospective, daily, real-time sampling study.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is highly prevalent in low-income and middle-income countries. International travel contributes substantially to the global spread of intestinal multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Hundreds of millions of annual visitors to low-income and middle-income countries are all exposed to intestinal multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria resulting in 30-70% of them being colonised at their return. The colonisation process in high-exposure environments is poorly documented because data have only been derived from before travel and after travel sampling.

Epidemiology and Impact of Limb Loss in the United States and Globally.

The main causes of limb loss include trauma, complications from diabetes and peripheral arterial disease, malignancy, and congenital limb deficiency. There are significant geographic variations in the incidence of upper and lower, and major and minor limb loss worldwide. Limb loss is costly for patients and the health care system. The availability of orthotic and prosthetic services, along with cost of services, represents barrier to care and contributes to morbidity and mortality. More research is needed, especially in low-income and middle-income countries to describe the extent of limb loss

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune comorbidities in aquaporin-4-immunoglobulin G (AQP4-IgG)-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) may be associated with increased disease severity and therapeutic challenges, yet prevalence estimates vary considerably. Some variability may reflect differences in population characteristics, geography, health systems, and methodology. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of autoimmune comorbidities in AQP4-IgG-positive NMOSD. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, Global Health, and Global Index Medicus for studies published from incept

Association Between Socioeconomic Status and Atrial Fibrillation: A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: Lower socioeconomic status (SES), reflected by greater socioeconomic deprivation, lower household income, and lower educational attainment (EA), has been associated with atrial fibrillation (AF). This study aimed to examine the causal influence of SES on AF risk. METHODS: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with Townsend deprivation index (TDI) or household income from the UK Biobank (N = 462,464 and N = 397,751, respectively) and EA from the Social Science Genetic Association Consortium (N = 3,037,499) were selected as instrumental variables. Financial toxicity among patients with breast cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity (FT) refers to the negative effects of the economic burden of medical care on patients that potentially lead to poor well-being and quality of life. Individuals with breast cancer are especially prone to high out-of-pocket costs (OOPCs). We aimed to evaluate the FT rate of individuals with breast cancer and determine particularly vulnerable patients. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed/Medline, Embase, Global Index Medicus, Web of Science (WOS), and EBSCO was performed from inception to July 28, 2025. Studies on FT in participants with breast cancer were i

A Novel Method for Generating Spatially Resolved Synthetic Populations for Health Impact Assessments in Vulnerable Populations.

The spatial resolution of environmental exposure and sociodemographic population data is often mismatched given limited publicly available population data that complies with privacy requirements for individuals. To address this limitation, we developed a novel matching algorithm to construct a synthetic population at the address-level. To demonstrate how our approach can improve environmental justice (EJ) analyses and health impact assessments (HIAs), we examined sociodemographic patterns of residential proximity to major roadways in Greater Boston (Massachusetts) and HIA results, comparing ou

Scoping Review of the Socioeconomic Value of Working Equids, and the Impact of Educational Interventions Aimed at Improving Their Welfare.

Working equids support millions of people globally, especially in low-income, lower-middle-income, and upper-middle-income countries. However, they commonly suffer from poor welfare and are typically overlooked in policy and funding decisions. This scoping review aimed to collate evidence on two topics related to working equid use in low- and middle-income countries: their socioeconomic value to their owners and the impact of educational interventions for owners/handlers aiming to improve equid welfare. Original research published from 2014 onwards was eligible for inclusion. This scoping revi

Beyond Incidence and Mortality: Socioeconomic Mediation of Gastric Cancer Disparities in the United States, 1990-2021.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) remains a major global health burden, yet US trends often obscure disparities hidden within national averages. Although incidence and mortality have declined overall, profound geographic, racial, and socioeconomic differences persist. Few studies have systematically examined how demographic composition and social determinants jointly shape GC burden across states. Methods: We analyzed Global Burden of Disease 2021 estimates for GC incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from 1990 to 2021 across 50 US states and the District of Columbia.
