Bilateral galactocele in a male infant with Down syndrome and congenital hypothyroidism.

Galactocele is an uncommon benign breast lesion. Its cause is unknown. Here, we report a male infant with Down syndrome and congenital hypothyroidism during the newborn period. At follow up, when he was 6 months old, bilateral mammillary swelling was detected and diagnosed as galactocele. Although thyroid hormone levels were normal, serum prolactin levels were elevated. Cyst aspiration was performed on the left side and 6 months after the aspiration of the cyst on the left side, both cysts had clinically and sonographically regressed. No recurrence was observed at the end of the 4th year.

Neuropathologic studies of the encephalopathy of prematurity in the late preterm infant.

It has been widely suggested that brain damage in survivors of late preterm deliveries is similar to that in early preterm infants, only less severe. This report addresses this concept through reanalysis of published neuropathologic data obtained according to late preterm in comparison with early preterm ages. Findings suggest that the spectrum of brain injury in the late preterm infant, as determined in an autopsy population, is similar to that found in early preterm infants, with potential differential susceptibility for different neuronal, glial, and vascular indices. Further research is ne

A rare case of crossed pulmonary arteries in an infant - case report.

Crossed pulmonary arteries are a quite rare form of pulmonary arterial malposition. In this anomaly, the left pulmonary artery originates from the pulmonary trunk to the right and usually above the origin of the right pulmonary artery. Both pulmonary arteries cross each other on their course to each respective lung. We presented a case of a Chinese infant with crossed pulmonary arteries. Physical examination showed a mild cyanosis and continuous machine-like heart murmur in the 2 intercostal space at the left sternal border. An echocardiogram revealed pulmonary hypertension, atrial septal defe

Examination of the effect of BornFree ActiveFlow baby bottles on infant colic.

Despite its benign, natural course, colic is a significant problem in babies and imparts a psychological and physical burden to parents. This study has examined the relief of colic symptoms when using BornFree ActiveFlow baby bottles by comparing observed symptoms of 30 otherwise healthy newborns (ages 2-21 weeks) who had all been diagnosed as having colic symptoms. Twenty of the babies were switched to feeding with BornFree bottles (the experimental group), while the other 10 babies continued feeding with bottles by other manufacturers (the control group). A significant improvement was exhibi

A case of cerebrospinal fluid leak in an infant after spinal anesthesia.

A 2 month old, 51 kg female infant underwent neuraxial anesthesia for repair of a right inguinal hernia. After two unsuccessful attempts at obtaining free-flowing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the L(3)-L(4) lumbar interspace with a 25-gauge (G) neonatal spinal needle, clear CSF was obtained using a Quincke 22-G needle. After easy aspiration, a total of 0.7 mL of 0.75% hyperbaric bupivicaine was injected intrathecally. Immediately after the spinal block, a caudal epidural block was placed by injecting 2 mL of 0.25% bupivacaine with 1:200,000 using a 22-G Quincke spinal needle. Surgery and recove

Timeliness of infant vaccination and factors related with delay in Flanders, Belgium.

Achieving high vaccination coverage is a necessary, but not a sufficient indicator of the quality of a vaccination programme, in terms of control and prevention of childhood infectious diseases. For optimal protection of infants, timeliness of vaccination is increasingly recognized as another important target. The aim of this study was to assess the timeliness of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccination in infants in Flanders (Belgium), and to identify predictors of vaccination delay. The timeliness was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier estimator in three co

Factors affecting the infant antibody response to measles immunisation in Entebbe-Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine failure is an important concern in the tropics with many contributing elements. Among them, it has been suggested that exposure to natural infections might contribute to vaccine failure and recurrent disease outbreaks. We tested this hypothesis by examining the influence of co-infections on maternal and infant measles-specific IgG levels. METHODS: We conducted an observational analysis using samples and data that had been collected during a larger randomised controlled trial, the Entebbe Mother and Baby Study (ISRCTN32849447). For the present study, 711 pregnant women and

Major liver resection by a hanging maneuver for an infant with hepatoblastoma.

BACKGROUND: The liver hanging maneuver (LHM) was reported to be a safe and accurate method for hepatectomy, and its use in adults has been increasing in recent years. Because fragility of a blood vessel and the tissue is concerned about in the children as compared with adults, the adaptation to children is subobsolete. CASE REPORT: We describe a case involving an extended right hepatic lobectomy using the LHM in a 5-month-old infant. We received LHM using foceps of the size identical to adults. There were no postoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS: Anterior approach is suitable for the hepa

Family and infant characteristics in relation to age at walking in Turkey.

The purpose of this study was to assess the onset of independent ambulation relative to possible relationships with maternal and infant characteristics. In a cross-sectional study, the health files of 1,553 Turkish children aged 12-23 months were selected by the multistage sampling method in the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) regions coded as low, medium and high malnutrition levels in Turkey. Children were selected from health centers by systematic sampling technique in each region. Kaplan-Meier analysis and estimated mean values were used for data description; log-ra

[Wolman disease with novel mutation of LIPA gene in a Chinese infant].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical characteristics of Wolman disease and diagnostic methods using enzymatic and molecular analysis. METHOD: Lysosomal acid lipase activity was measured using 4-methylumbelliferyl oleate in the leukocytes of an infant suspected of Wolman disease and LIPA gene mutational analysis was performed by PCR and direct sequencing in the proband and his parents. After the diagnosis was confirmed, the clinical, biochemical, radiological and histopathological findings in this case of Wolman disease were retrospectively reviewed. RESULT: The sixteen-day-old boy was failing

Effect of zinc supplementation on pregnancy and infant outcomes: a systematic review.

Poor maternal zinc status has been associated with foetal loss, congenital malformations, intra-uterine growth retardation, reduced birth weight, prolonged labour and preterm or post-term deliveries. A meta-analysis completed in 2007 showed that maternal zinc supplementation resulted in a small but significant reduction in preterm birth. The purposes of this analysis are to update that previous review and expand the scope of assessment to include maternal, infant and child health outcomes. Electronic searches were carried out to identify peer-reviewed, randomised controlled trials where daily

Clinically silent subdural hemorrhage causes bilateral vocal fold paralysis in newborn infant.

Bilateral congenital vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) may result from multiple etiologies or remain idiopathic when no real cause can be identified. If obstructive dyspnea is significant and requires urgent stabilization of the airway, then intubation is performed first and an MRI of the brain is conducted to rule out an Arnold-Chiari malformation that can benefit from a shunt procedure and thus alleviate the need for a tracheostomy. Clinically silent subdural hemorrhage without any birth trauma represents another cause of neonatal BVFP that resolves spontaneously within a month. It is of clinical

Infant feeding bottle design, growth and behaviour: results from a randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Whether the design of an anti-vacuum infant feeding bottle influences infant milk intake, growth or behavior is unknown, and was the subject of this randomized trial. SUBJECTS: 63 (36 male) healthy, exclusively formula-fed term infants. INTERVENTION: Randomisation to use Bottle A (n = 31), one-way air valve: Philips Avent) versus Bottle B (n = 32), internal venting system: Dr Browns). 74 breast-fed reference infants were recruited, with randomisation (n = 24) to bottle A (n = 11) or B (n = 13) if bottle-feeding was subsequently introduced. Randomisation: stratified by gender and

A rare form of heteropagus twinning: three-armed infant with spinal dysraphism.

An ectopic or accessory limb attached to the back is an extremely rare and strange condition, and there are only a few documented cases in the worldwide literature. The first case was described by Jones and Larkin (1889). There are several theories regarding the origin of this condition. Asymmetric conjoined twinning which is located dorsally in the vertebral column (rachipagus) is the most probable diagnosis of our patient. Conjoined twinning is very rare and the incidence is 1 per 50 000 live births. Rachipagus is even rarer, with no more than 30 case reports so far (Chadha et al. (1993, 200
