The ventricular depolarization gradient: effects of exercise, pacing rate, epinephrine, and intrinsic heart rate control on the right ventricular evoked response.

A new pacing technique is described that permits high fidelity recording of the paced ventricular evoked response, including cardiac depolarization. Integration of the paced R wave yields the ventricular depolarization gradient (GD), which is dependent on activation sequence and the spatial dispersion of activation times. GD was studied in 27 dogs to determine the effects of treadmill exercise at fixed rate pacing (n = 10), elevation of heart rate in the absence of stress (n = 20), epinephrine at fixed rate (n = 6), and exercise in the presence of normal chronotrophic response (n = 7). Thirty Weeks Dietary Nano-Selenium Improves Liver Health of Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) Revealed by Transcriptomics and Metabolomics.

Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), China's most valuable freshwater aquaculture species, exhibits growth and nutrient utilization efficiency that are highly dependent on feed quality. After macronutrient balancing, nano-selenium (nano-Se) supplementation becomes critical for enhancing health and profitability. Although nano-Se has been observed to alleviate oxidative stress and inflammation, the molecular mechanisms underlying its hepatoprotective effects following long-term administration remain systematically uncharacterized. To fill this gap, this study utilized transcriptomic and metab

Role of Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties of Natural Products in Curing Cardiovascular Diseases.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of mortality worldwide. According to the WHO, every year, there is an increase in the rate of death globally due to CVDs, stroke, and myocardial infarction. Several risk factors contribute to the development of CVDs, one of which is hypoxia, defined as a reduction in oxygen levels. This major stressor affects aerobic species and plays a crucial role in the development of cardiovascular disease. Research has uncovered the "hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) switch" and investigated the onset, progression, acute and chronic effects, and adaptat

Collagen epineurial substitute-assisted neurorrhaphy is superior to conventional end-to-end neurorrhaphy in a rat model of peripheral nerve injury.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) are common and may result in profound and persistent functional deficits. Although end-to-end neurorrhaphy remains the gold standard for nerve repair, clinical outcomes are frequently suboptimal. This study aimed to validate a novel surgical method using a collagen epineurial substitute (CES) to minimize the number of sutures and reduce nerve tension at the coaptation site. METHODS: Finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to simulate stress distribution and guide suture configuration. Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats underwent sciatic nerve transection

Male infertility research for the ART clinic: priorities to enhance patient outcomes, education and wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: Men attending ART clinics often have poor fertility awareness and are typically overlooked for psychological support. Recent developments in understanding the link between sub-fertility, healthspan and lifespan enforce the need for comprehensive health assessments of men attending ART clinics. Evidence now suggests paternal factors including genetics, epigenetics, paternal age, oxidative stress and DNA damage contribute to embryo development and the health of the offspring. With the described decline in global sperm counts, overall male reproductive health and the increased utilisa

Mental health and wellbeing interventions for uniformed service personnel: a mixed methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Uniformed service personnel are routinely exposed to occupational trauma in their roles which contribute to elevated rates of mental health conditions. A wide range of mental health and wellbeing interventions may help uniformed service personnel manage their psychological responses to challenging incidents at work. Previous reviews of those interventions have focused on single groups of professionals or intervention types, limiting cross-sector insights. This review uses a mixed methods approach to synthesise evidence associated with mental health and wellbeing interventions acros

Targeting β-Adrenergic Signaling in Colorectal Cancer: Molecular Mechanisms and Therapeutic Potential of β-Blockers.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide despite substantial advances in surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy. The limited efficacy of current treatment strategies in advanced disease and the emergence of therapeutic resistance highlight the urgent need for novel adjunctive therapeutic approaches. Increasing evidence indicates that chronic stress and sustained activation of β-adrenergic signaling promote colorectal tumor initiation, progression, angiogenesis, metastatic dissemination, and immune evasio

Transporter promiscuity and redox-driven metal partitioning in plant responses to chemically analogous metals.

Chemically similar metal(loid)s exploit nutrient transport systems and destabilize integrated metal-homeostasis networks, triggering redox imbalance, transcriptional reprogramming, and multiscale regulatory responses that ultimately determine plant adaptation or toxicity. Plant growth depends on the homeostasis of mineral nutrients, but it is short in heterogeneous soils where required elements are found together with chemically similar harmful metal(loid)s. The divalent ionic and coordination properties of Cd-Zn and Ni-Fe are similar, while the arsenate-phosphate interactions are structurally

Regulatory Variation at TERT and TERC Shows Limited Association with Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease in Carriers of the Mexican Founder Mutation PSEN1 A431E.

Background: Early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) caused by autosomal dominant mutations provides a deterministic framework for investigating genetic modifiers of neurodegeneration. Telomere biology has emerged as a central regulator of genomic stability, cellular ageing, and stress response integration, yet its role in EOAD, particularly in under-represented populations, remains poorly defined. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional case-control study to evaluate the genetic distribution, disease association, and predicted regulatory consequences of common variants in the telomere maintenan

Low-level laser irradiation stimulated tumoricidal impacts and dose-dependent modulation of Wnt signaling in three-dimensional human colorectal cancer microspheres.

The high incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) has been a big challenge in human medicine. Along with several available therapies, specific modalities, e.g., low-level laser irradiation (LLLI), have been introduced to achieve proper regenerative outcomes. Unfortunately, most studies have investigated the tumoricidal effects of LLLI on cancer cells using a 2D culture system with less comparable capacity to in vivo conditions. Here, the detrimental impacts of LLLI were studied in human CRC cells encapsulated inside alginate-gelatin (Alg-Gel) microspheres after 48 h. Alg (1% w/v)-Gel (1% w/v) micr

Exogenous glucocorticoids to improve extinction learning for post-traumatic stress disorder patients with hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-axis dysregulation: a study protocol description.

Background: Trauma-focused treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are effective for many patients. However, relapse may occur when acquired extinction memories fail to generalize beyond treatment contexts. A subgroup of PTSD patients - potentially with substantial exposure to early-life adversity (ELA) - show dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which results in lower cortisol levels. Glucocorticoids, including cortisol, appear to facilitate strength and generalization of emotional memories. Objective: We describe the protocol of an integrated PTSD study

Dysferlin Enables Tubular Membrane Proliferation in Cardiac Hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac hypertrophy compensates for increased biomechanical stress of the heart induced by prevalent cardiovascular pathologies but can result in heart failure if left untreated. Here, we hypothesized that the membrane fusion and repair protein dysferlin is critical for the integrity of the transverse-axial tubule (TAT) network inside cardiomyocytes and contributes to the proliferation of TAT endomembranes during pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy. METHODS: Stimulated emission depletion and electron microscopy were used to localize dysferlin in mouse and human cardiomyo

Monocytes reprogrammed by 4-PBA potently contribute to the resolution of inflammation and atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation initiated by inflammatory monocytes underlies the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. However, approaches that can effectively resolve chronic low-grade inflammation targeting monocytes are not readily available. The small chemical compound 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA) exhibits broad anti-inflammatory effects in reducing atherosclerosis. Selective delivery of 4-PBA reprogrammed monocytes may hold novel potential in providing targeted and precision therapeutics for the treatment of atherosclerosis. METHODS: Systems analyses integrating single-cell RNA-sequencing a

Role of heat shock proteins in gastric inflammation and ulcer healing.

With the discovery of gastric acid and pepsin in the stomach, the questions about "why does the stomach not digest itself?", "how does the stomach preserve its normal integrity under the continuous exposure to lytic materials that are secreted?", and "how does the stomach resist against overwhelming Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection or persistent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) administration?" had been raised. The discovery of "gastric mucosal barrier" or "the presence of defense system" might be the answers to these questions. The first level of gastric mucosal barrier c

Short-term effect of acarbose on specific intestinal disaccharidase activities and hyperglycaemia in CBA diabetic mice.

BACKGROUND: Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is common in critically ill children and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Recognition and management of AKI is often delayed, predisposing patients to risk of clinically significant fluid accumulation (Fluid Overload (FO)). Early recognition and intervention in high risk patients could decrease fluid associated morbidity. We aim to assess an AKI Clinical Decision Algorithm (CDA) using a sequential risk stratification strategy integrating the Renal Angina Index (RAI), urine Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) and the Furos
