Cognitive reserve and neuropsychological functioning in older HIV-infected people.

Progress in treatments has led to HIV+ patients getting older. Age and HIV are risk factors for neurocognitive impairment (NCI). We explored the role of cognitive reserve (CR) on cognition in a group of virologically suppressed older HIV+ people. We performed a multicenter study, consecutively enrolling asymptomatic HIV+ subjects ≥60 years old during routine outpatient visits. A comprehensive neuropsychological battery was administered. Raw test scores were adjusted based on Italian normative data and transformed into z-scores; NCI was defined according to Frascati criteria. All participants u

The discovery of phenylketonuria: the story of a young couple, two retarded children, and a scientist.

In the 1920s, a little girl 3 years of age was brought from China to the United States by her American mother. Although the child was beautiful, her mind was not developing. The grief-stricken mother had consulted doctors in China, but they could neither diagnose the problem nor provide treatment. Morning and night the same questions occupied her mind: "What is the matter with my little girl? What is causing it? Is there any doctor, anywhere, who can cure her?" In the United States, she also went from doctors to psychologists to clinics looking for someone who could help. Finally, she went to

Cochlear dead regions in typical hearing aid candidates: prevalence and implications for use of high-frequency speech cues.

OBJECTIVES: This study had two purposes. The first was to assess the prevalence of cochlear dead regions (DRs) among listeners with moderate to severe hearing loss that is typical of a large proportion of adult hearing aid wearers. The second was to determine whether subjects who tested positive for DRs differed from those without DRs in their ability to utilize high-frequency speech cues in a laboratory test. DESIGN: One hundred and seventy adults (307 ears) were tested for DRs at frequencies from 0.5 to 4 kHz using the threshold equalizing noise (HL) test. Speech recognition ability was mea

Development of an artificial intelligence prediction model for moderate-to-severe COPD exacerbations using continuous multiple unobtrusive sensors: protocol of a multicentre prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Exacerbations, impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and reduced exercise capacity increase the risk of hospitalisations and death in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, their monitoring relies on in-person assessments, potentially delaying early care. While smart sensing technologies can enable remote monitoring, their use in predicting disease worsening remains limited. The TOLIFE Clinical Study A (CSA) aims to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model integrating clinical data with smart sensing devices data to predict exacerbation onset and ch
