Coagulation Factors and Natural Anticoagulants as Surrogate Markers of Preeclampsia and Its Subtypes: A Case-Control Study in a Ghanaian Population.

Preeclampsia (PE) is associated with endothelial injury and hemostatic abnormalities. However, the diagnostic role of coagulation parameters and natural anticoagulants in predicting PE has not been explored in Ghana. This study assessed plasma levels of these factors as surrogate markers of PE and its subtypes. This case-control study included 90 women with PE (cases) and 90 normotensive pregnant women (controls). Blood samples were drawn for the estimation of complete blood count and coagulation tests. The prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and the calculatio

Nuances in the effect of types of intimate partner violence on aspects of child development: Evidence from the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on the effect of intimate partner violence (IPV) do not distinguish between the effects of the different types of IPVs on the various aspects of child development. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the effect of multiple dimensions of IPV, specifically physical violence, controlling behavior, and emotional abuse, on children's physical and cognitive development. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study uses data from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutritional Survey (CLHNS). The study uses a final sample of n = 1506 index children in Cebu, Philippines. Current status of patient-reported outcome measures and other subjective assessment grading tools in bladder pain syndrome.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is characterised by chronic pain in the bladder area accompanied by urgency and/or frequency without the presence of other confusable diseases. Owing to a lack of gold standard diagnostic tests and definitive cure it is paramount to define treatment goals and validated measurements of outcomes. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are validated questionnaires completed by patients that can help to reduce ambiguity in the BPS patient treatment pathway, but they are currently underutilised. We present to our knowledge the first summar

The connectional anatomy of visual mental imagery: evidence from a patient with left occipito-temporal damage.

Most of us can use our "mind's eye" to mentally visualize things that are not in our direct line of sight, an ability known as visual mental imagery. Extensive left temporal damage can impair patients' visual mental imagery experience, but the critical locus of lesion is unknown. Our recent meta-analysis of 27 fMRI studies of visual mental imagery highlighted a well-delimited region in the left lateral midfusiform gyrus, which was consistently activated during visual mental imagery, and which we called the Fusiform Imagery Node (FIN). Here, we describe the connectional anatomy of FIN in neurot

Case report: One child with an autism spectrum disorder who had chronically elevated serum levels of CK and CK-MB.

Some patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit elevated serum creatine kinase levels, which are believed to be associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. Although a few articles have reported this situation in the past and the increase mostly ranges from 100 to 300 U/L, there is a paucity of previous study focusing on the serum creatine kinase MB isoenzyme. This article discusses a 5-year-old girl with ASD, whose serum creatine kinase and creatine kinase MB isoenzyme have been rising for nearly 2 years, fluctuating at 584-993 and 111-625 U/L respectively. Except for behavioral and l

Combining electroacupuncture and transcranial direct current stimulation as an adjuvant therapy enhances spontaneous conversation and naming in subacute vascular aphasia: A retrospective analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Emerging evidence shows the effectiveness of speech and language therapy (SLT); however, precise therapeutic parameters remain unclear. Evidence for the use of adjunctive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to treat post-stroke aphasia (PSA) is promising; however, the utility of combining tDCS and electroacupuncture (EA) has not yet been analyzed. This study assessed the therapeutic consequences of EA and tDCS coupled with SLT in subacute PSA patients who were also undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on subacute (<

Challenges and recommendations to improve implementation of phototherapy among neonates in Malawian hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Severe neonatal jaundice can result in long term morbidities and mortality when left untreated. Phototherapy is the main-stay intervention for treating moderate jaundice and for prevention of the development of severe jaundice. However, in resource-limited health care settings, phototherapy has been inconsistently used. The objective of this study is to evaluate barriers and facilitators for phototherapy to treat neonatal jaundice at Malawian hospitals. METHODS: We conducted a convergent mixed-method study comprised of a facility assessment and qualitative interviews with healthca

Phenotype and genotype analyses of Chinese patients with autosomal dominant mental retardation type 5 caused by SYNGAP1 gene mutations.

Background: Autosomal dominant mental retardation type 5 (MRD5), a rare neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) characterized by intellectual disability (ID), developmental delay (DD), and epilepsy predominantly, is caused by a heterozygous mutation in the SYNGAP1 gene. SYNGAP1 mutations have been rarely reported in the Chinese population. Here, we present an investigation of SYNGAP1 mutations in a clinical cohort with ID and DD in Shandong, a northern province in China, to further explore the genotype and phenotype correlations. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 10 children with SYNGA

Consensus recommendations on managing the selected comorbidities including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and interstitial lung disease in rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-related comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), osteoporosis (OP), and interstitial lung disease (ILD), are sub-optimally managed. RA-related comorbidities affect disease control and lead to impairment in quality of life. We aimed to develop consensus recommendations for managing RA-related comorbidities. METHODS: The consensus statements were formulated based on emerging evidence during a face-to-face meeting of Taiwan rheumatology experts and modified through three-round Delphi exercises. The quality of evidence and strength of recommenda

Recommendations for uniform definitions used in newborn screening for severe combined immunodeficiency.

BACKGROUND: Public health newborn screening (NBS) programs continuously evolve, taking advantage of international shared learning. NBS for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) has recently been introduced in many countries. However, comparison of screening outcomes has been hampered by use of disparate terminology and imprecise or variable case definitions for non-SCID conditions with T-cell lymphopenia. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine whether standardized screening terminology could overcome a Babylonian confusion and whether improved case definitions would promote internationa

Executive functions and writing skills in children with and without ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with impairments in executive functioning and academic writing skills. However, our understanding of the extent to which these children's writing difficulties are related to their underdeveloped executive functions-and whether this relation is attributable to specific executive functions-is limited. METHOD: A clinically-evaluated and carefully-phenotyped sample of 91 children ages 8-13 (M = 10.60, SD = 1.25; 37 girls) were administered multiple, counterbalanced tests of the three core executive functions
