Field studies on the bionomics of Bithynia siamensis siamensis and the transmission of Opisthorchis viverrini in Bangna, Bangkok, Thailand.

A field study on the bionomics of Bithynia siamensis siamensis and the transmission patterns of Opisthorchis viverrini was carried out in Bangna, Bangkok, Thailand, from May 1975 to April 1976. Snail populations were found to fluctuate according to rainfall. During the high rainfall period where snail habitats were deep, snail populations recovered at the water surface were higher than those recovered on the mud bottom; during the low rainfall perod where snail habitats were shallow, snails were both found copiously at the water surface and on the mud bottom. Snails infected with O. viverrini

The biosynthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid during the life-span of the mosquito.

Previous results from this laboratory [Kao et al, (1976) Biochem. J. 154, 471-480] demonstrated that a low-molecular-weight DNA species, "sDNA", present in high concentrations during rapid larval growth of the yellow-fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, may be an intermediate in DNA replication. We have now determined the life-span profiles of synthetic rates and the steady-state contents of sDNA and total DNA by radiometric and biochemical procedures and by using mosquitoes grown and maintained under defined and controlled conditions, including axenic culture and synchronization of stages. 2. Genetic manipulation of the pigment pathway in a sea urchin reveals distinct lineage commitment prior to metamorphosis in the bilateral to radial body plan transition.

Echinoderms display a vast array of pigmentation and patterning in larval and adult life stages. This coloration is thought to be important for immune defense and camouflage. However, neither the cellular nor molecular mechanism that regulates this complex coloration in the adult is known. Here we knocked out three different genes thought to be involved in the pigmentation pathway(s) of larvae and grew the embryos to adulthood. The genes tested were polyketide synthase (PKS), Flavin-dependent monooxygenase family 3 (FMO3) and glial cells missing (GCM). We found that disabling of the PKS gene a

Structural optimization of natural plant products: Construction and insecticidal activities study of eugenol's derivatives.

Crop pests are major biotic threats to agriculture and posing continuous challenges to global food security. Natural products provide valuable templates for pesticide discovery, and rational structural modification can enhance their potency, stability, and safety. In this study, a series of eugenol derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for insecticidal activity. Compound 3r showed remarkable toxicity against S. frugiperda (the LD50 value of contact toxicity and stomach toxicity were 0.079 mg /larva and 0.501 mg/mL, respectively.), 6.0-fold and 4.4-fold stronger than eugenol, and exhibited

Wireworms (Coleoptera: Elateridae) Use Root Volatiles and CO2 to Discriminate Among Host Plants.

In the absence of visual signals, subterranean arthropods rely on olfactory and tactile cues to navigate toward resources. Here, in a series of pairwise dual-choice bioassays, we investigated the Limonius californicus (Col., Elateridae) larva response to wheat, pea, and bean seedlings in sand-filled olfactometers. We then quantified volatile organic compounds (VOC) emitted from roots. Wireworm preference for beans compared to wheat was attributed to the higher CO2 emission. Wireworm preference for peas compared to wheat was attributed to the higher amounts (µg/hr) of hexanal emitted from pea r

Evaluation of tirandamycins with selective activity against Enterococci in the silkworm infection model.

In the course of screening for anti-enterococcal antibiotics from microbial resources, a new tirandamycin congener (1), together with four known tirandamycins (2 to 5), were isolated from Streptomyces tirandamycinicus TMPU-20A040. The structures of these tirandamycins were elucidated using NMR and MS analyses; 1 was identified as 12-carboxy tirandamycin A and 2 to 5 as known tirandamycins A (2), B (3), E (4), and J (5). Compounds 1 to 3 exhibited selective anti-Enterococci activity, including vancomycin-resistant strains, with MIC in the range of 1.0 to 64 µg ml-1 in the microdilution method.

Fast and easy method to culture and obtain large populations of male nematodes.

Caenorhabditis elegans is a model system widely used in fundamental research. Even though, nematodes are easy to maintain in the laboratory, obtaining large populations of worms require a lot of work and is time consuming. Furthermore, because C. elegans are mainly hermaphrodite it is even more complicated to obtain large amounts of males which make high-throughput experiments using C. elegans males very challenging. In order to overcome these limitations, we developed affordable and rapid methods to: (1) grow large synchronous worm populations (2) easily obtain large amounts of males We devel

Biomineralized Nanoscavenger Abrogates Proinflammatory Macrophage Polarization and Induces Neutrophil Clearance through Reverse Migration during Gouty Arthritis.

The deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals induces the overexpression of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and proinflammatory cytokines in residential macrophages, further promoting the infiltration of inflammatory leukocytes in the joints of gouty arthritis. Herein, a peroxidase-mimicking nanoscavenger was developed by forming manganese dioxide over albumin nanoparticles loaded with an anti-inflammatory drug, indomethacin (BIM), to block the secretion of ROS and COX2-induced proinflammatory cytokines in the MSU-induced gouty arthritis model. In the MSU-induced arthritis mouse model, the B

Innovation in Alternative Food Sources: A Review of a Technological State-of-the-Art of Insects in Food Products.

Insects present great potential for the food industry due to their easier rearing conditions and high nutritional value, in comparison with traditional livestock. However, there is a lack of evaluation of the technological status of food products developed with edible insects. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the emergent technological and scientific applications of edible insects in the food industry through a prospective study of patent documents and research articles. Espacenet was used as a research tool, applying the terms Insect, Pupa, Larva, or Nymph and the codes A23L33 and A23V20

Marine Antifouling Coatings Based on Durable Bottlebrush Polymers.

We report a next-generation, biocide-free, and durable marine antifouling coating technology. To achieve this, we combined two different polymers previously developed by us. First, we synthesized well-defined 2-hydroxypropyl acrylamide (HPA) based bottlebrush polymers with concentrated polymer brush (CPB) structures, which exhibit excellent bioinertness, and second, we synthesized photoreactive copolymers of 2-hydroxypropyl acrylamide (HPA) and N-benzophenone acrylamide (BPA), which can be cross-linked by exposure to sunlight for 30 min. Simply mixing the bottlebrush polymers with the photorea

Schistosoma mansoni miracidia: revisiting motility and survival parameters for improved computational modelling.

Schistosoma mansoni is the main causative agent of intestinal schistosomiasis which affects millions of people worldwide. At the larval stage, miracidia are released into bodies of water where they utilize their motility to successfully infect their intermediate host, snails. Here, we revisit the motility and survival of S. mansoni miracidia throughout its life span. Briefly, miracidia motility was monitored at 30-min and 60-min intervals under the presence/absence of natural/artificial light. Based on a subjective evaluation of activity, body shape and transparency, 6 categories of miracidia

Inhibitors of DNA topoisomerases I and II applied to Candida dubliniensis reduce growth, viability, the generation of petite mutants and toxicity, while acting synergistically with fluconazole.

The increasing resistance of Candida species to azoles emphasizes the urgent need for new antifungal agents with novel mechanisms of action. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of three DNA topoisomerase inhibitors of plant origin (camptothecin, etoposide and curcumin) on the growth of Candida dubliniensis. The phylogenetic analysis showed a close relationship between the topoisomerase enzymes of C. dubliniensis and Candida albicans. The alignment of the amino acid sequences of topoisomerase I and II of yeasts and humans evidenced conserved domains. The docking study revealed affin

Micro-CT imaging of Onchocerca infection of Simulium damnosum s.l. blackflies and comparison of the peritrophic membrane thickness of forest and savannah flies.

Onchocerciasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by Onchocerca Diesing 1841 (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) nematodes transmitted by blackflies. It is associated with poverty and imposes a significant health, welfare and economic burden on many tropical countries. Current methods to visualize infections within the vectors rely on invasive methods. However, using micro-computed tomography techniques, without interference from physical tissue manipulation, we visualized in three dimensions for the first time an L1 larva of an Onchocerca species within the thoracic musculature of a blackfly

Measurement of the IgG Avidity Index in the Diagnosis of Clinical Toxocariasis Patients.

Toxocara spp. are parasitic nematodes responsible for human toxocariasis, a common zoonotic helminth infection. The five main features of human toxocariasis are the classical ocular toxocariasis and visceral larva migrans syndrome, followed by covert toxocariasis, common toxocariasis and neurotoxocariasis. The diagnosis of toxocariasis is feasible by considering clinical symptoms, anamnestic history and serology laboratory results; however, serological criteria cannot be used to distinguish active Toxocara infection from past exposure, which is an area of much discussion in clinical practice.
