Automatic echocardiographic evaluation of the probability of pulmonary hypertension using machine learning.

Echocardiography, a simple and noninvasive tool, is the first choice for screening pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, accurate assessment of PH, incorporating both the pulmonary artery pressures and additional signs for PH remained unsatisfied. Thus, this study aimed to develop a machine learning (ML) model that can automatically evaluate the probability of PH. This cohort included data from 346 (275 for training set and internal validation set and 71 for external validation set) patients with suspected PH patients and receiving right heart catheterization. Echocardiographic images on paras

Recent Opioid Use Impedes Range Adaptation in Reinforcement Learning in Human Addiction.

BACKGROUND: Drugs like opioids are potent reinforcers thought to co-opt value-based decisions by overshadowing other rewarding outcomes, but how this happens at a neurocomputational level remains elusive. Range adaptation is a canonical process of fine-tuning representations of value based on reward context. Here, we tested whether recent opioid exposure impacts range adaptation in opioid use disorder, potentially explaining why shifting decision making away from drug taking during this vulnerable period is so difficult. METHODS: Participants who had recently (<90 days) used opioids (n = 34)

Altered motor learning and coordination in mouse models of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with increasing prevalence. Over 1,000 risk genes have now been implicated in ASD, suggesting diverse etiology. However, the diagnostic criteria for the disorder still comprise two major behavioral domains - deficits in social communication and interaction, and the presence of restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior (RRBs). The RRBs associated with ASD include both stereotyped repetitive movements and other motor manifestations including changes in gait, balance, coordination, and motor skill learning. In recent yea

Machine learning for acute kidney injury: Changing the traditional disease prediction mode.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious clinical comorbidity with clear short-term and long-term prognostic implications for inpatients. The diversity of risk factors for AKI has been recognized in previous studies, and a series of predictive models have been developed using traditional statistical methods in conjunction with its preventability, but they have failed to meet the expectations in limited clinical applications, the rapid spread of electronic health records and artificial intelligence machine learning technology has brought new hope for the construction of AKI prediction models. Reinforcement Learning-Based Approach for Minimizing Energy Loss of Driving Platoon Decisions.

Reinforcement learning (RL) methods for energy saving and greening have recently appeared in the field of autonomous driving. In inter-vehicle communication (IVC), a feasible and increasingly popular research direction of RL is to obtain the optimal action decision of agents in a special environment. This paper presents the application of reinforcement learning in the vehicle communication simulation framework (Veins). In this research, we explore the application of reinforcement learning algorithms in a green cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) platoon. Our aim is to train member vehic

MANet: Multi-branch attention auxiliary learning for lung nodule detection and segmentation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary nodule detection and segmentation are currently two primary tasks in analyzing chest computed tomography (Chest CT) in order to detect signs of lung cancer, thereby providing early treatment measures to reduce mortality. Even though there are many proposed methods to reduce false positives for obtaining effective detection results, distinguishing between the pulmonary nodule and background region remains challenging because their biological characteristics are similar and varied in size. The purpose of our work is to propose a method for automatic nodule det

Advancing Network Security with AI: SVM-Based Deep Learning for Intrusion Detection.

With the rapid growth of social media networks and internet accessibility, most businesses are becoming vulnerable to a wide range of threats and attacks. Thus, intrusion detection systems (IDSs) are considered one of the most essential components for securing organizational networks. They are the first line of defense against online threats and are responsible for quickly identifying potential network intrusions. Mainly, IDSs analyze the network traffic to detect any malicious activities in the network. Today, networks are expanding tremendously as the demand for network services is expanding

Large-scale pancreatic cancer detection via non-contrast CT and deep learning.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the most deadly solid malignancy, is typically detected late and at an inoperable stage. Early or incidental detection is associated with prolonged survival, but screening asymptomatic individuals for PDAC using a single test remains unfeasible due to the low prevalence and potential harms of false positives. Non-contrast computed tomography (CT), routinely performed for clinical indications, offers the potential for large-scale screening, however, identification of PDAC using non-contrast CT has long been considered impossible. Here, we develop a deep

Machine-learning predictive model of pregnancy-induced hypertension in the first trimester.

In the first trimester of pregnancy, accurately predicting the occurrence of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) is important for both identifying high-risk women and adopting early intervention. In this study, we used four machine-learning models (LASSO logistic regression, random forest, backpropagation neural network, and support vector machines) to predict the occurrence of PIH in a prospective cohort. Candidate features for predicting the occurrence of middle and late PIH were acquired using a LASSO algorithm. The performance of predictive models was assessed using receiver operating cha

Machine learning methods for low-cost pollen monitoring - Model optimisation and interpretability.

Pollen is a major issue globally, causing as much as 40 % of the population to suffer from hay fever and other allergic conditions. Current techniques for monitoring pollen are either laborious and slow, or expensive, thus alternative methods are needed to provide timely and more localised information on airborne pollen concentrations. We have demonstrated previously that low-cost Optical Particle Counter (OPC) sensors can be used to estimate pollen concentrations when machine learning methods are used to process the data and learn the relationships between OPC output data and conventionally m

OCT-guided Robotic Subretinal Needle Injections: A Deep Learning-Based Registration Approach.

Subretinal injection (SI) is an ophthalmic surgical procedure that allows for the direct injection of therapeutic substances into the subretinal space to treat vitreoretinal disorders. Although this treatment has grown in popularity, various factors contribute to its difficulty. These include the retina's fragile, nonregenerative tissue, as well as hand tremor and poor visual depth perception. In this context, the usage of robotic devices may reduce hand tremors and facilitate gradual and controlled SI. For the robot to successfully move to the target area, it needs to understand the spatial r

Infection diagnosis in hydrocephalus CT images: a domain enriched attention learning approach.

Objective. Hydrocephalus is the leading indication for pediatric neurosurgical care worldwide. Identification of postinfectious hydrocephalus (PIH) verses non-postinfectious hydrocephalus, as well as the pathogen involved in PIH is crucial for developing an appropriate treatment plan. Accurate identification requires clinical diagnosis by neuroscientists and microbiological analysis, which are time-consuming and expensive. In this study, we develop a domain enriched AI method for computerized tomography (CT)-based infection diagnosis in hydrocephalic imagery. State-of-the-art (SOTA) convolutio

Prediction model for myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery using machine learning.

Myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS) is strongly associated with postoperative outcomes. We developed a prediction model for MINS and have provided it online. Between January 2010 and June 2019, a total of 6811 patients underwent non-cardiac surgery with normal preoperative level of cardiac troponin (cTn). We used machine learning techniques with an extreme gradient boosting algorithm to evaluate the effects of variables on MINS development. We generated two prediction models based on the top 12 and 6 variables. MINS was observed in 1499 (22.0%) patients. The top 12 variables in
