The first case of melioidosis reported in Denmark was in a 64-year-old man 2 weeks after his return from a 3-week visit to Kenya. Of six cats with eosinophilic enteritis, two had lesions confined to the intestinal tract, and four had varied disseminated eosinophilic infiltration of other organs. The lesions in these cats are similar to those of the hypereosinophilic syndrome in man. A feline hypereosinophilic syndrome is proposed, consisting of eosinophilic enteritis, disseminated eosinophilic disease, and eosinophilic leukemia.

Fifty-two patients with perennial nasal symptoms of sneezing paroxysms, profuse watery rhinorrhea, and pruritus of the nasopharyngeal mucosa in an "on-again-off-again" symptomatic pattern have been clinically and immunologically characterized. Historically, age at onset of symptoms showed equal distribution from the first through the fifth decades, and the duration of symptoms at diagnosis ranged from 3 mo to 40 yr (mean 9 yr). Of an unselected group of 159 women attending a sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic 20% (32) had symptoms of urethritis. Thirty children under 17 years of age with cervical lymphadenopathy were evaluated. Lymphadenitis was attributed to Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci in 10 of the patients (33 percent), to Staphylococcus aureus in four and to infectious mononucleosis in four. Two patients had both infectious mononucleosis in Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci. One child was affected with Acinetobacter with calcoaceticus (mima) and another with mycobacteria. In eight children (27 percent), no etiologic agent could be found.

Quantitative studies of neutrophil marrow were carried out in 10 patients with chronic neutropenia (60 to 1,970 cells/microliter) with no other abnormalities and no serious infections. Several immunological markers were tested in 52 untreated cases of chronic lymphocyte leukemia (CLL) to see whether their frequency differed according to the clinical stage in Rai's system. We have investigated the mechanism of splenic irradiation-induced granulocytopenia in two patients with myelofibrosis and marked splenomegaly. Serial assays were performed for circulating granulocyte-monocyte progenitors capable of colony formation in vitro (CFU-C). For comparison, similar studies were performed on two patients receiving whole brain irradiation for glioma. We describe a quantitative method for the grading of contact allergic reactions in guinea pigs. These reactions are characterized by marked cellular infiltration, and the method is based on total and differential counting of cells in the upper corium. Three biologic effects were clearly associated with C. parvum infusions: a) granulocytosis with lymphomonocytopenia, b) increase in responsiveness to phytohemmagglutinin and c) increase of specific antibodies to C. parvum antigens.
