Insights from auditory cortex for GABA+ magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies of aging.

Changes in levels of the inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) may underlie aging-related changes in brain function. GABA and co-edited macromolecules (GABA+) can be measured with MEGA-PRESS magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). The current study investigated how changes in the aging brain impact the interpretation of GABA+ measures in bilateral auditory cortices of healthy young and older adults. Structural changes during aging appeared as decreasing proportion of grey matter in the MRS volume of interest and corresponding increase in cerebrospinal fluid. GABA+ referenced to

A Practical Workflow for Magnetic Resonance-Guided Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy to the Pancreas.

The increased adoption of stereotactic body radiation therapy has allowed for delivery of higher doses, potentially associated with better outcomes but at the risk of higher toxicity. The intimate association of radiosensitive organs at risk (eg, stomach, duodenum, bowel) has historically limited the delivery of ablative doses to the pancreas. The advent of magnetic resonance-guided radiation therapy with improved soft-tissue contrast allows for gated delivery without an internal target volume and online adaptive replanning to maximize the therapeutic ratio. Patient selection requires addition

Continuous preparation of a nontoxic magnetic fluid as a dual-mode contrast agent for MRI.

Ultrasmall nanoparticle contrast agents provide dual-mode MRI. However, the application of ultrasmall nanoparticle contrast agents is limited by low manufacturing outputs and cumbersome preparation processes. Herein, we report a novel continuous-flow coprecipitation method for the preparation of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles magnetic fluid (CFCPFe) coated with ultrasmall cysteine-terminated polymethacrylic acid (Cys-PMAA). The preparation process is more coherent, simpler, and less expensive. Compared with magnetic fluids prepared by the conventional method (Cys-PMAA@Fe3O4), CFCPFe has smaller parti

Magnetically responsive nanoplatform targeting circRNA circ_0058051 inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma progression.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of highly stable and closed-loop noncoding RNA that are involved in the occurrence and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, little is known about the therapeutic role of circRNAs in HCC. We found that high circ_0058051 expression was negatively correlated with the prognosis of HCC patients. Circ_0058051 knockdown attenuated the proliferation and colony formation, meanwhile inhibited migration of HCC cells. Circ_0058051 may be used as a target for HCC gene therapy. We synthesized a novel small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery system, PEG-P

Studying Axonal Transport in the Brain by Manganese-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MEMRI).

From the earliest notions of dynamic movements within the cell by Leeuwenhoek, intracellular transport in eukaryotes has been primarily explored by optical imaging. The giant axon of the squid became a prime experimental model for imaging transport due to its size, optical transparency, and physiological robustness. Even the biochemical basis of transport was identified using optical assays based on video microscopy of fractionated squid axoplasm. Discoveries about the dynamics and molecular components of the intracellular transport system continued in many model organisms that afforded experi

Sleep restriction alters cortical inhibition in migraine: A transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

OBJECTIVE: Migraine is a primary headache disorder with a well-known association with insufficient sleep. However, both the underlying pathophysiology of the disease and the relationship with sleep is still unexplained. In this study, we apply transcranial magnetic stimulation to investigate possible mechanisms of insufficient sleep in migraine. METHODS: We used a randomised, blinded crossover design to examine 46 subjects with migraine during the interictal period and 29 healthy controls. Each subject underwent recordings of cortical silent period, short- and long-interval intracortical inhi

Cortical reactivity to transcranial magnetic stimulation predicts risk of post-stroke delirium.

OBJECTIVE: Post-stroke delirium (PSD) is a frequent and with regard to outcome unfavorable complication in acute stroke. The neurobiological mechanisms predisposing to PSD remain poorly understood, and biomarkers predicting its risk have not been established. We tested the hypothesis that hypoexcitable or disconnected brain networks predispose to PSD by measuring brain reactivity to transcranial magnetic stimulation with electroencephalography (TMS-EEG). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 33 acute stroke patients within 48 hours of stroke onset. Brain reactivity to single-pulse

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Markers for Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson's Disease: Current View.

Cognitive impairment (CI) ranging from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia is a common and disturbing complication in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Numerous studies have focused on neuropathological mechanisms underlying CI in PD, along with the identification of specific biomarkers for CI. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a promising method, has been adopted to examine the changes in the brain and identify the candidate biomarkers associated with CI. In this review, we have summarized the potential biomarkers for CI in PD which have been identified through multi-modal MRI s

Assessing the Effectiveness of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in the Treatment of Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder.

Objective. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a frequent and disabling neuropsychiatric disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 3%. About 40% to 60% of patients show no or just partial symptom improvement to treatment with a first-line drug and cognitive behavior therapy. Ten percent of patients remain treatment refractory despite several treatments. For these patients, repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) has been suggested as a treatment option. Method. We investigated the efficacy of rTMS on the Supplementary Motor Area (SMA) in 16 right handed pharmaco-resistant OCD patie

Trends in Utilization of Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Stroke Patients With Cardiac Rhythm Devices.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is safe for most patients with cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). However, patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (AIS/TIA) who have CIEDs may undergo MRI less frequently than patients without devices. We assessed contemporary use of MRI for patients with AIS/TIA and the effect of a recent coverage revision by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on MRI utilization. METHODS: Using Optum® claims data from January 2012 to June 2019, we performed an interrupted time se

Methodologies and MR Parameters in Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Neurography: A Scoping Review Protocol.

Magnetic resonance neurography (MRN), the MR imaging of peripheral nerves, is clinically used for assessing and monitoring peripheral neuropathies based on qualitative, weighted MR imaging. Recently, quantitative MRN has been increasingly reported with various MR parameters as potential biomarkers. An evidence synthesis mapping the available methodologies and normative values of quantitative MRN of human peripheral nerves, independent of the anatomical location and type of neuropathy, is currently unavailable and would likely benefit this young field of research. Therefore, the proposed scopin
