Metabolomic Characterization of Neonates Born to Hyperthyroid Mothers.

The aim of this study was to compare blood metabolic profiles between neonates born to propylthiouracil (PTU)-treated hyperthyroid mothers and those born to healthy mothers and to evaluate potential impacts on fetal health despite maternal treatment. Blood metabolites from 31 neonates exposed to PTU and 36 healthy controls were analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, and the Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital of Huadu. Metabolite differences were assessed, and enriched pathway analysis was performed

Extracellular cues and cellular conversations: the molecular choreography of embryo implantation.

Infertility affects millions of people globally with recent statistics indicating that one in six adults is experiencing reproductive challenges at some point. For female infertility in particular, the global health burden is continuously intensifying with significant disparities across countries. Female infertility has a complex multifactorial etiology, and understanding the underlying mechanisms is crucial to reduce the health burden and enhance patient well-being. For a pregnancy, successful embryo implantation is a pivotal step, requiring precise spatiotemporal synchronization between a co

Appropriate glycemic management protects the germline but not the uterine environment in hyperglycemia.

Emerging evidence indicates that parental diseases can impact the health of subsequent generations through epigenetic inheritance. Recently, it was shown that maternal diabetes alters the metaphase II oocyte transcriptome, causing metabolic dysfunction in offspring. However, type 1 diabetes (T1D) mouse models frequently utilized in previous studies may be subject to several confounding factors due to severe hyperglycemia. This limits clinical translatability given improvements in glycemic control for T1D subjects. Here, we optimize a T1D mouse model to investigate the effects of appropriately

The effect of maternal intravenous hydration on amniotic fluid index in oligohydramnios.

OBJECTIVE: Assessing amniotic fluid determines an important dimension of fetal health. Significant relationships of oligohydramnios, which occurs in 1-2% of pregnancies, with abnormal pregnancy outcomes such as intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), fetal anomalies, umbilical cord compression, fetal distress, preterm childbirth, meconium-stained amniotic fluid, perinatal mortality and cesarean section necessitate the measurement of amniotic fluid volume in many prenatal fetal health assessments. Amniotic fluid volume may significantly fluctuate between different gestational ages. Reduced uter

Longitudinal effects of maltreatment, intimate partner violence, and Reminiscing and Emotion Training on children's diurnal cortisol regulation.

Dysregulation in children's physiological stress systems is a key process linking early adversity to poor health and psychopathology. Thus, interventions that improve children's stress physiology may help prevent deleterious health outcomes. Reminiscing and Emotion Training (RET) is a brief relational intervention designed to improve maternal caregiving support by enhancing maltreating mothers' capacity to reminisce with their young children. This study evaluated associations between maltreatment, intimate partner violence, and the RET intervention with changes in children's diurnal cortisol r

Exclusive Breastfeeding Is Not Associated with Maternal-Infant Bonding in Early Postpartum, Considering Depression, Anxiety, and Parity.

It is important to clarify how the breastfeeding method affects women's mental health, and how women's mental health affects the breastfeeding method in the early postpartum period when major depression and other psychiatric problems are most likely to occur. This study aimed to examine this bidirectional relationship in the early postpartum period. Participants were 2020 postpartum women who completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS). We obtained data for participants' breastfeeding method for four weeks after childbirth. We performed

Maternal iron homeostasis: effect on placental development and function.

Iron is an essential mineral that participates in oxygen transport, DNA synthesis and repair, and as a cofactor for various cellular processes. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. Due to blood volume expansion and demands from the fetal-placental unit, pregnant women are one of the populations most at risk of developing iron deficiency. Iron deficiency during pregnancy poses major health concerns for offspring, including intrauterine growth restriction and long-term health complications. Although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, maternal iron deficienc

Maternal stress and behavioral adaptation in methadone- or buprenorphine-exposed toddlers.

The current study examined the relationship between early interaction, parenting stress, maternal psychological distress symptoms, and behavior problems and health-related quality of life among children born to mothers in opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) in Norway during the period 2005-2007 (N = 36). This group was compared with a normative sample of mothers without substance abuse problems and their children (N = 36). There were significant group differences (p < .01) in perceived child problems in toddlerhood. In a regression model, mothers' self-reported psychological distress symptoms i

Physical violence between intimate partners during pregnancy and postpartum: a prediction model for use in primary health care facilities.

This article offers a simple predictive model of physical intimate partner violence (PIPV) to be used by primary health care (PHC) professionals. The sample comprised 811 mothers of children <5 months old attending PHC facilities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A multinomial logit model was used. Measured by the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales, PIPV was classified in three levels (absence, at least one episode during pregnancy or postpartum, and presence in both periods). Socio-economic, demographic and life style variables were considered as potential predictors. Maternal age <20 years, an educati

Pathways between Risk/Protective Factors and Maternal Postnatal Depressive Symptoms: The ELFE Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: The risk factors for postnatal depressive symptoms (PNDS) are numerous, but little is known about the protective factors or the interactions between different exposures. The present study explored the pathways between maternal, infant and parenthood vulnerabilities or risk/protective factors and PNDS at 2 months postpartum (PP) in a large sample of women from the general population. METHODS: We used data from the French ELFE cohort, a nationally representative cohort of children followed-up from birth. The available information about vulnerabilities or risk/protective factors for P

Validity of a minimally invasive autopsy for cause of death determination in maternal deaths in Mozambique: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Despite global health efforts to reduce maternal mortality, rates continue to be unacceptably high in large parts of the world. Feasible, acceptable, and accurate postmortem sampling methods could provide the necessary evidence to improve the understanding of the real causes of maternal mortality, guiding the design of interventions to reduce this burden. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The validity of a minimally invasive autopsy (MIA) method in determining the cause of death was assessed in an observational study in 57 maternal deaths by comparing the results of the MIA with those of the

Oral health skills framework for pregnant women: a professional consensus.

BACKGROUND: Oral health during the perinatal period is essential for maternal and child oral health. Pregnancy increases vulnerability to oral conditions (periodontal disease and dental caries) associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, while children's oral health is strongly influenced by parental-particularly maternal-knowledge, attitudes, practices, and oral health status. Although oral health education interventions may be offered during pregnancy follow-up, their effectiveness is difficult to evaluate, due to a lack of validated framework. This study aimed to develop a competency framew

Coordination as a best practice from the polio eradication initiative: Experiences from five member states in the African region of the World Health Organization.

BACKGROUND: As part of the efforts to eradicate polioviruses in the African Region, structures were put in place to ensure coordinated mobilization and deployment of resources within the framework of the global polio eradication initiative (PEI). The successes of these structures made them not only attractive to other public health interventions, but also caused them to be deployed to the response efforts of other diseases interventions, without any systematic documentation. This article documents the contributions of PEI coordination units to other public health interventions in the African R
