A simple and rapid method for isolation of bromisovalum with Sep-Pak C18 cartridges from human whole blood, plasma, and urine containing allylisopropylacetylurea as an internal standard, is presented. Microbial consortia capable of aerobically degrading more than 99% of exogenous trichloroethylene (TCE) (50 mg/liter) were collected from TCE-contaminated subsurface sediments and grown in enrichment cultures. TCE at concentrations greater than 300 mg/liter was not degraded, nor was TCE used by the consortia as a sole energy source. Features are described of a new staining method for the detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in faeces. Smears, fixed in acid-methanol, are stained with heated safranin and counterstained with methylene blue. Oocysts stain a vivid orange-pink and are easily recognized. Alcohol is mutagenic, cancerogenic and teratogenic in man. Ethanol is mutagenic via its first metabolite, acetaldehyde. This is substantiated by the findings that acetaldehyde induces chromosomal aberrations, sister-chromatid exchanges and cross-links between DNA strands. In an earlier paper we described the synthesis and the antitrichomonas activity of 2-nitro-alpha,alpha,1-trimethyl-1H-imidazole-5-methanol (2). Starting from this compound, several derivatives have been synthesized. Among these, the phenyl carbonate 8 has been shown to possess activity equal to that of 2 and to be less toxic. This compound therefore is interesting in comparison with some antitrichomonas agents currently in use clinically. Before undertaking an in-depth investigation, compound 8 was subjected to some studies to see whether it has any effects on the central nervous system (CNS).

A method for the simultaneous extraction and HPLC analysis of nitrophenols and poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aquatic samples is presented. The efficiency of the solvent extraction and the solid phase extraction (SPE) is compared. The results showed that the polymeric SPE sorbent is the best compromise for the simultaneous extraction of the tested compounds taking into consideration the lipophilicity of PAHs and the polarity of nitrophenols. The effect of the depletion of intercellular lipids from human stratum corneum and shed snake skin on the permeability to salicylic acid (SA) was investigated in vitro. Shed snake skin was used as a model membrane for human stratum corneum. Lipid depletion with a mixture of chloroform and methanol increased the permeability of those skins to the ionized form but not to the unionized form of SA. Moreover, lipid depletion increased dramatically the permeability of shed snake skin to compounds with low lipophilicity, although it did not have a significant effect on the more lipophilic compounds.
