Management of a large post-traumatic skin and bone defect using an Ilizarov frame.

The authors report the case of a 28-year old male who presented with a compound diaphyseal fracture of the tibia, which was treated with intramedullary nailing. Postoperatively he required an extensive fasciotomy for an acute compartment syndrome. The fracture evolved towards post-traumatic osteomyelitis, growing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), combined with a large overlying soft tissue gap. An Ilizarov frame was used to treat both the bone and the skin defect. The infected fracture was treated by resection and longitudinal bone transport. Meanwhile, the skin was gradually

Efficacy of Listerine antiseptic against MRSA, Candida albicans and HIV.

The antiseptic activity of Listerine and Cool Mint Listerine against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Candida albicans, human immuno deficiency virus (HIV) and oral bacteria was examined in this study. Exposure for 30 seconds to Listerine killed MRSA completely. Exposure for 30 seconds significantly decreased viable cells of C. albicans. More than 60% of HIV was inactivated by a 30 second exposure to 50% Listerine. Listerine exhibited a potent bactericidal effect against cariogenic and periodontopathic bacteria. Cool Mint Listerine had almost the same antiseptic effect again

Defective pgsA contributes to increased membrane fluidity and cell wall thickening in S. aureus with high-level daptomycin resistance.

Daptomycin is a membrane-targeting last-resort antimicrobial therapeutic for the treatment of infections caused by methicillin- and/or vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. In the rare event of failed daptomycin therapy, the source of resistance is often attributable to mutations directly within the membrane phospholipid biosynthetic pathway of S. aureus or in the regulatory systems that control cell envelope response and membrane homeostasis. Here we describe the structural changes to the cell envelope in a daptomycin-resistant isolate of S. aureus strain N315 that has acquired mutation

Properties of a novel PBP2A protein homolog from Staphylococcus aureus strain LGA251 and its contribution to the β-lactam-resistant phenotype.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains show strain-to-strain variation in resistance level, in genetic background, and also in the structure of the chromosomal cassette (SCCmec) that carries the resistance gene mecA. In contrast, strain-to-strain variation in the sequence of the mecA determinant was found to be much more limited among MRSA isolates examined so far. The first exception to this came with the recent identification of MRSA strain LGA251, which carries a new homolog of this gene together with regulatory elements mecI/mecR that also have novel, highly divergent s

Comparative Analysis of Biofilm Formation and Antibiotic Resistance in Five ESKAPE Pathogen Species from a Tertiary Hospital in Bangladesh.

Background: Four of the six ESKAPE pathogens are responsible for a majority of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)-related deaths worldwide. Identifying the pathogens that evade antibiotic treatments more efficiently than others can help diagnose pathogens requiring more attention. The study was thus designed to evaluate the biofilm and resistance properties of five ESKAPE pathogens comparatively. A total of 165 clinical isolates of 5 ESKAPE pathogen species (E. faecium, S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, A. baumannii, and P. aerurginosa) were collected from a tertiary hospital in Bangladesh. Methodology: F
