Association of breakfast, total diet quality, and mental health in adolescents: a cross-sectional study of HBSC in Greece.

The emerging field of nutritional psychiatry offers proof that diet quality can be changed to reduce one's risk of developing mental illness. What you eat has a big impact on teenage mental health, and the quality and frequency of breakfast, as well as the different food groups, can affect adolescent mental health. In this study, regression models were employed to analyze four indicators (self-rated health, body satisfaction, life satisfaction, and eight symptoms) of mental health problems as well as demographic factors (gender, age, body mass index, affluence class, physical activity), with f

Intimate partner violence, suicidality, and self-harm: a probability sample survey of the general population in England.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a recognised risk factor for psychiatric disorders. There is little current evidence on IPV and self-harm and suicidality, and we therefore aimed to investigate the associations between experience of lifetime and past-year IPV with suicidal thoughts, suicide attempt, and self-harm in the past year. METHODS: We analysed the 2014 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, a cross-sectional survey of 7058 adults (aged ≥16 years) in England, which used a multistage random probability sampling design and involved face-to-face interviews. Participants were as

Predictors of adverse outcomes and cost after surgical management for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: Analyses from a national database.

INTRODUCTION: We utilized a national administrative database to investigate drivers of immediate adverse economic and hospital outcomes, including non-routine discharge, prolonged length of stay (LOS), and admission costs among patients undergoing surgery for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) was queried from 2007 to 2017 for patients aged ≥60 with a diagnosis code for iNPH undergoing surgery. Multivariable logistic-regression models and Wald χ2 were used to identify drivers of non-routine discharge, prolonged length of stay (LOS) (>

Work hazards and workers' mental health: an investigation based on the fifth European Working Conditions Survey.

BACKGROUND: Workplace hazards are a significant source of health impairment for workers and of financial losses for firms. EU directives on workers' health and safety standards significantly contributed to reduce reported occupational injuries, yet the incidence and prevalence of work-related mental illness is still very high. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between work-related hazards and individuals' perceived mental health. We reviewed the existing evidence on the channels through which task-related factors, adverse agents and psychosocial factors are expected to affect worker

Socioeconomic factors, perceived control and self-reported health in Russia. A cross-sectional survey.

Russia has the lowest life expectancy among industrialised countries, but little is known about other health outcomes and determinants of health in the Russian population. Here we report a cross-sectional study in a national sample of the Russian population of social and psychosocial determinants of two self-reported health indicators: self-rated health (shown to predict mortality in prospective studies) and physical functioning (validated against more objective health measures). A multi-stage sample of the Russian population aged 18 years and more was interviewed (n=1599, response rate 66%).

Economic evaluation of oral Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir versus best supportive care in patients at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19 in Germany: a cost-effectiveness analysis.

AIM: To estimate the cost-effectiveness of Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (NMV/r) versus best supportive care (BSC) in patients at high-risk for progression to severe COVID-19 from a German health payer perspective. METHODS: A closed cohort static model of 1,000 COVID-19 patients capturing the short-term (<1 year) via decision-tree and long-term (lifetime) outcomes via Markov model was used to assess the cost-effectiveness of NMV/r versus BSC. Model inputs were derived from the EPIC-HR clinical trial and published contemporary real-world data. Probabilistic and deterministic sensitivity analyses (PSA

Using social interaction models for genetic analysis of skin damage in gilts.

BACKGROUND: Skin damage is a trait of economic and welfare importance that results from social interactions between animals. These interactions may produce wound signs on the gilt's skin as a result of damage behavior (i.e., fighting), biting syndromes (i.e., tail, vulva, or ear biting), and swine inflammation and necrosis syndrome. Although current selection for traits that are affected by social interactions primarily focuses on improving direct genetic effects, combined selection on direct and social genetic effects could increase genetic gain and avoid a negative response to selection in c

Application of an Anomaly Detection Model to Screen for Ocular Diseases Using Color Retinal Fundus Images: Design and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: The supervised deep learning approach provides state-of-the-art performance in a variety of fundus image classification tasks, but it is not applicable for screening tasks with numerous or unknown disease types. The unsupervised anomaly detection (AD) approach, which needs only normal samples to develop a model, may be a workable and cost-saving method of screening for ocular diseases. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate an AD model for detecting ocular diseases on the basis of color fundus images. METHODS: A generative adversarial network-based AD method for dete

A stochastic model simulating paratuberculosis in a dairy herd.

Paratuberculosis (PTB) causes severe economic losses to farmers and the infection has very complex effects (many indirect) on the production of a dairy herd. These indirect effects have not or only briefly been described by earlier PTB-simulation models, and therefore they were included in a new model called PTB-Simherd. Our aim was to develop the basis for a decision-support tool which can predict herd-specific production-related effects from introduction of different control strategies against PTB. The PTB-Simherd is a dynamic, stochastic, and mechanistic Monte-Carlo model simulating a dairy

Clinical and Economic Outcomes Associated with Complicated Urinary Tract Infections Caused by Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales in Patients Admitted to a Referral Center in Lima, Peru.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) affect 150 million people annually, with increased incidence among individuals over 60 years of age. Complicated UTIs (cUTIs), frequently caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, present therapeutic challenges due to host factors and anatomical abnormalities. Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) infections are of particular concern as they are associated with higher mortality and healthcare costs. This study aimed to compare the clinical and economic outcomes of cUTIs caused by CRE and carbape

Cost-Effectiveness of Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder in Pregnancy and Its Impact on Birth Outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: For the first time in nearly 2 decades, the US infant mortality rate has increased, coinciding with a rise in overdose-related deaths as a leading cause of pregnancy-associated mortality in some states. Prematurity and low birth weight-often linked to opioid use in pregnancy-are major contributors. OBJECTIVE: To assess the health and economic impact of perinatal opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment on maternal and postpartum health, infant health in the first year of life, and infant long-term health. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a cost-effectiveness, population-bas

Mechanistic insights into the kidney injury in chickens induced by hypervirulent fowl adenovirus serotype 4.

UNLABELLED: Hypervirulent fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4) has emerged as a significant poultry pathogen since 2015, exhibiting clinical multi-organ and multi-tissue tropism post-infection, resulting in substantial economic losses in the poultry industry. However, the molecular mechanism underlying kidney injury caused by FAdV-4 infection remains unclear. Our results indicated that FAdV-4 infection in chickens induces damage to kidney tissues, characterized by the degeneration and necrosis of kidney epithelial cells, glomerular injury, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and the activation of a r

Prevalence and Severity of Diabetic Gastroparesis Symptoms in Relation to Diabetics in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Gastroparesis is a chronic illness characterized by delayed emptying of the stomach without any mechanical obstruction and therefore presents with conditions such as bloating, early satiety, and abdominal pain, among others. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia population, it is a major risk factor because, through review, one can find very limited data on the prevalence and severity of the atrophic gastritis condition among diabetes populations in the region. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine the magnitude and severity of symptoms of gastroparesis in type 1 and

Maternal stress and sex ratio at birth in Sweden over two and a half centuries: a retest of the Trivers-Willard hypothesis.

STUDY QUESTION: Is there a negative relationship, as predicted in the Trivers-Willard hypothesis (TWH), between the intensity of maternal stress and sex ratio at birth (SRB)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Using a comprehensive data set with multiple indicators of maternal stress, most measures of stress show no statistically significant association with SRB over a period spanning 243 years, indicating no support for the TWH. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Evolutionary biologists have proposed a widely discussed hypothesis that women in poor and stressful conditions during pregnancy are more likely to give birth t

A potent risk model for predicting new-onset acute coronary syndrome in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Northwest China.

AIMS: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is now very prevalent in China. Due to the lower rate of controlled diabetes in China compared to that in developed countries, there is a higher incidence of serious cardiovascular complications, especially acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aim of this study was to establish a potent risk predictive model in the economically disadvantaged northwest region of China, which could predict the probability of new-onset ACS in patients with T2DM. METHODS: Of 456 patients with T2DM admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University from Janua
