Early onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder and associated comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have aimed to identify subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) based on their age of onset (AOO). Obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCS disorders) such as tic disorders have been particularly associated with an early onset in some studies. However, subtypes of early- and late-onset OCD are unevenly determined, and the biological and the clinical validity of these subtypes are unknown. This study was undertaken to discriminate the subtypes of OCD in different AOO levels and to test the hypothesis that different AOO bands are associated with a differen

The effect of heat waves on mental health in a temperate Australian city.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to identify mental, behavioral, and cognitive disorders that may be triggered or exacerbated during heat waves, predisposing individuals to heat-related morbidity and mortality. DESIGN: Using health outcome data from Adelaide, South Australia, for 1993-2006, we estimated the effect of heat waves on hospital admissions and mortalities attributed to mental, behavioral, and cognitive disorders. We analyzed data using Poisson regression accounting for overdispersion and controlling for season and long-term trend, and we performed threshold analysis using hock

Childhood adversity and adult psychiatric disorder in the US National Comorbidity Survey.

BACKGROUND: Survey data are presented on the associations between retrospectively reported childhood adversities and subsequent onset and persistence of DSM-III-R disorders. METHODS: Data come from the US National Comorbidity Survey, a large survey of the US household population. RESULTS: Twenty-six adversities were considered, including loss events (e.g. parental divorce), parental psychopathologies (e.g. maternal depression), interpersonal traumas (e.g. rape) and other adversities (e.g. natural disaster). These adversities were consistently associated with onset, but not persistence, of DS

Post-gaming return to reality: a key factor in predicting the positive and negative outcomes of escapism.

INTRODUCTION: Escapism is a key gaming motive associated with both psychological relief and Gaming Disorder (GD). Yet, existing models often neglect the dynamic role of goal attainment shaping gaming outcomes. Drawing on Goal Systems Theory, we introduce the construct of Post-Gaming Return (PGR)-a state reflecting successful psychological transition from gameplay to real life-as a potential explanatory mechanism of adaptive and maladaptive escapist play. METHODS: Two studies were conducted with active gamers (Study 1: N = 259; Study 2: N = 193). Participants completed the PGR scale along with

Mapping of the network connection between sleep quality symptoms, depression, generalized anxiety, and burnout in the general population of Peru and El Salvador.

BACKGROUND: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials has suggested a bidirectional relationship between sleep problems and mental health issues. Despite these findings, there is limited conclusive evidence on the relationship between sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and burnout. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to evaluate the relationships between sleep quality symptoms, anxiety, depression, and burnout in samples of adult individuals from two Latin American countries, Peru and El Salvador, through network analysis and to identify key symptoms that reinforce the correlation and i

Elevated atherogenic lipid profile in youth with bipolar disorder during euthymia and hypomanic/mixed but not depressive states.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal blood lipid levels are common in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). Previous studies have revealed lipid-mood associations in adults with BD, but no data on this relationship is available in youth populations. This cross-sectional study examined the associations of lipid levels with mood states and symptoms in a cohort of youth with BD. METHODS: Participants were youth with BD and healthy controls (HCs) between the ages of 13-20 years. We compared the levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (H

A 52-week prophylactic randomised control trial of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Previous work suggests supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may improve mood symptoms in bipolar disorder (BD) although findings remain unclear. In this study, we assess the efficacy of omega-3 PUFA administration for prophylaxis in BD using a clinical trial design over 52-weeks (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04210804). METHODS: Individuals with BD (n = 80) were randomised to receive placebo (n = 40) or 1 g eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) plus 1 g docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; n = 40) adjunctively for 52-weeks. The primary outcome measure comprised the num

Impact of mood stabilizers and antiepileptic drugs on cytokine production in-vitro.

Changes within the immune system have been reported to contribute to the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder and epilepsy. Interestingly, overlapping results regarding the cytokine system have been found for both diseases, namely alterations of interleukins IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). However, the effect of mood stabilizers and antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on these cytokines has not been systematically evaluated, and their effect on IL-17 and IL-22, other immunologically important cytokines, has not been reported. Therefore, we systematically measured levels of

A placebo-controlled 18-month trial of lamotrigine and lithium maintenance treatment in recently depressed patients with bipolar I disorder.

BACKGROUND: The anticonvulsant lamotrigine was previously shown to be effective for bipolar depression. This study assessed the efficacy and tolerability of lamotrigine and lithium compared with placebo for the prevention of mood episodes in bipolar disorder. METHOD: During an 8- to 16-week open-label phase, lamotrigine (titrated to 200 mg/day) was added to current therapy for currently or recently depressed DSM-IV-defined bipolar I outpatients (N = 966) and concomitant drugs were gradually withdrawn. Patients stabilized on open-label treatment (N = 463) were then randomly assigned to lamotri

Longitudinal evolution of the transdiagnostic prodrome to severe mental disorders: a dynamic temporal network analysis informed by natural language processing and electronic health records.

Modelling the prodrome to severe mental disorders (SMD), including unipolar mood disorders (UMD), bipolar mood disorders (BMD) and psychotic disorders (PSY), should consider both the evolution and interactions of symptoms and substance use (prodromal features) over time. Temporal network analysis can detect causal dependence between and within prodromal features by representing prodromal features as nodes, with their connections (edges) indicating the likelihood of one feature preceding the other. In SMD, node centrality could reveal insights into important prodromal features and potential int

Psychological Distress Among School-Aged Children with and Without Intrauterine Cocaine Exposure: Perinatal Versus Contextual Effects.

Whether intrauterine cocaine exposure (IUCE) explains unique variance in psychiatric functioning among school age children, even after controlling for other biological and social risk factors, has not been fully delineated. As part of a longitudinal birth cohort study of children with and without IUCE, we conducted and analyzed data based on structured clinical interviews with 105 children (57% male) and their caregivers when the child was approximately 8.5 years old; 47% of the children had experienced IUCE. Interviews included past and current major psychological disorders and sub-threshold

The Psychosis Spectrum in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome Is Comparable to That of Nondeleted Youths.

BACKGROUND: Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a promising model for studying psychosis risk. Direct comparisons of psychosis features between 22q11DS and nondeleted (ND) individuals are limited by inconsistency and small samples. In the largest study to date, we compare 22q11DS to ND in comorbidities, functioning, cognition, and psychosis features across the full range of overall severity. METHODS: ND youths (n = 150) ages 9 to 24 years were matched to 22q11DS individuals (n = 150) on age and sex, stratifying for presence of psychosis spectrum disorder. Individuals were evalua

[Binge eating disorder: Links with personality and emotionality].

OBJECTIVES: Our two objectives were: (1) to investigate the relationship between binge eating disorder, dimensions of personality (according to the Big Five model of Costa and McCrae) and those of emotionality in the "tripartite" model of emotions of Watson and Clark; (2) to evaluate the correspondence between the Binge Eating Scale (BES) and the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI-2) scores. METHOD: Four self-administered questionnaires were completed on a shared doc website: the EDI-2, the BES, the BFI-Fr (Big Five Inventory-French version) and the EPN-31 (Positive and Negative Emotionality Scal

Executive and emotional dysfunction in Machado-Joseph disease.

Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) is an autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxia. Few studies have examined the neuropsychological and neurobehavioral profiles of patients with MJD. In this study, six individuals with MJD were given a battery of neuropsychological tests. Relative impairments on timed verbal attention tasks and verbal fluency (Stroop, Oral Symbol Digit Modalities, and Controlled Oral Word Association Test) were found. Other executive impairments also were seen on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, independent of motor dysfunction severity. Moderate- to severe levels of depressive sym

Psychiatric family history and neurological disease in autistic spectrum disorders.

The authors obtained neurological assessments and psychiatric family history data for 40 children with autistic spectrum disorders (autism, Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder). Neurological evaluation included EEG, MRI, karyotyping and positron emission tomography as indicated. Family history data were obtained from family members during long-term follow-up. 20 probands had positive neurological findings, 18 with negative family history. 14 had no neurological findings and positive family histories; they tended to have higher function. Six had neither, and two had both. The

Ethical and psychiatric aspects of torture: a Canadian study.

In the last two decades widespread use of torture by totalitarian governments has been reported in over 60 countries. This situation concerns physicians who are sometimes called upon to see the victims. This paper reports the psychiatric findings in a group of 41 Latin American refugees who arrived in Canada from 1977 to 1979 and alleged to have been subjected to political persecution and torture under the military rulers of their own countries. Most of them, young educated men, were apprehended violently and imprisoned under conditions below the minimum international standards. Systematic phy

The potential of neuromelanin-sensitive MRI in psychiatric disorders.

Psychiatric disorders represent a significant public health concern due to their high prevalence and lifelong substantial impact. Despite advances in understanding their neurobiological underpinnings, the transdiagnostic mechanisms driving psychiatric conditions remain unclear. Neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (NM-MRI) is a non-invasive technique for investigating the dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems, offering valuable insights into their role in psychiatric disorders. This review explores the potential of NM-MRI in psychiatric research, considering its promise to reveal
