Quantitative evaluation of adhesion severity around subscapularis and its relationship with shoulder range of motion in frozen shoulder and rotator cuff disorder: an observational study using dynamic ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the severity of adhesion between muscles in the shoulder joint using dynamic ultrasonography and to confirm whether adhesions cause range of motion (ROM) restrictions. METHODS: Twenty-four shoulders from 15 frozen shoulder patients and 24 shoulders from 18 rotator cuff disorder patients were enrolled. We obtained ultrasound video sequences of the subscapularis (SSC) and deltoid muscles during shoulder external rotation. The mean stretching velocities of the deltoid and SSC were subsequently analyzed using a personal computer. If adhesions occurred betw

Increased treatment durations lead to greater improvements in non-weight bearing dorsiflexion range of motion for asymptomatic individuals immediately following an anteroposterior grade IV mobilisation of the talus.

Manual therapy aims to minimise pain and restore joint mobility and function. Joint mobilisations are integral to these techniques, with anteroposterior (AP) talocrural joint mobilisations purported to increase dorsiflexion range of motion (DF-ROM). This study aimed to determine whether different treatment durations of single grade IV anteroposterior talocrural joint mobilisations elicit statistically significant differences in DF-ROM. Sixteen asymptomatic male football players (age = 27.1 ± 5.3 years) participated in the study. Non-weight bearing (NWB) and weight bearing (WB) DF-ROM was measu

A biomechanical comparison of tendon-bone interface motion and cyclic loading between single-row, triple-loaded cuff repairs and double-row, suture-tape cuff repairs using biocomposite anchors.

PURPOSE: To compare tendon-bone interface motion and cyclic loading in a single-row, triple-loaded anchor repair with a suture-tape, rip-stop, double-row rotator cuff repair. METHODS: Using 18 human shoulders from 9 matched cadaveric pairs, we created 2 groups of rotator cuff repairs. Group 1 was a double-row, rip-stop, suture-tape construct. Group 2 was a single-row, triple-loaded construct. Before mechanical testing, the supraspinatus footprint was measured with calipers. A superiorly positioned digital camera optically measured the tendon footprint motion during 60° of humeral internal and

Difference in systolic motion velocity of the left ventricular posterior wall in patients with asymmetric septal hypertrophy and prior anteroseptal myocardial infarction. Evaluation by pulsed tissue Doppler imaging.

The left ventricular (LV) posterior wall in patients with asymmetric septal hypertrophy or prior anteroseptal myocardial infarction (A-MI) frequently demonstrates normal or supernormal motion to compensate for hypokinesis of the interventricular septum. This study evaluated the systolic motion velocity of the posterior wall in these conditions using a pulsed tissue Doppler imaging system. The study population consisted of 30 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) and asymmetric septal hypertrophy, 25 with prior A-MI and 30 normal controls. The systolic excursion of the posterior wall w

Effects of Adding Posterior Ankle Joint Mobilization to Eccentric Training on Ankle Range of Motion and Athletic Performance in Basketball Athletes with Restricted Ankle Dorsiflexion: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Restricted ankle dorsiflexion is common in basketball athletes and has been associated with altered lower-limb mechanics and reduced athletic performance. Although ankle joint mobilization is widely used to improve mobility, its effects on athletic performance remain unclear. The aim of this study was to examine whether adding posterior ankle joint mobilization to a structured exercise-based program incorporating eccentric strengthening and stretching improves ankle mobility and athletic performance in basketball athletes with restricted dorsiflexion. Primary outcomes were dorsifle

Effects of repeated cervical active range of motion with overpressure on fascial displacement of the upper trapezius muscle among individuals with and without myofascial pain syndrome: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is marked by myofascial trigger points and associated fascial adhesions that limit mobility and cause pain, reducing active cervical range of motion (AROM). This study examined differences in upper trapezius fascial displacement between individuals with and without MPS after repeated cervical AROM and analyzed its association with diagnosis, symptom laterality, age, sex, occupation, and symptom chronicity. METHODS: Twelve researchers-six measuring the superficial fascia and six measuring the deep fascia-all with reliable methods (K ≥ 0.40), analyzed

A systematic review of the impact of abdominal compression and breath-hold techniques on motion, inter-fraction set-up errors, and intra-fraction errors in patients with hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Reducing motion is vital when radiotherapy is used to treat patients with hepatobiliary (HPB) and pancreatic malignancies. Abdominal compression (AC) and breath-hold (BH) techniques aim to minimise respiratory motion, yet their adoption remains limited, and practices vary. This review examines the impact of AC and BH on motion, set-up errors, and patient tolerability in HPB and pancreatic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This systematic review, conducted using PRISMA and PICOS criteria, includes publications from January 2015 to February 2023. Eligible studies focused

Combined Prolotherapy and Physical Therapy in a 60-Year-Old Man with Left Shoulder Pain and Limited Range of Motion (Frozen Shoulder) Following a Hemiplegic Stroke: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Frozen shoulder with limited range of motion is a common and debilitating condition that occurs on the affected side following a stroke. The effectiveness of therapy was reported to be negatively correlated with the complexity of pathogenesis. Prolotherapy involves injection into the joint of a small amount of irritant, such as dextrose, which enhances tissue strength and facilitates healing by targeting joint spaces. The treatment is used to relieve pain. This report describes the effects of combined prolotherapy and physical therapy in a 60-year-old man with left shoulder pain and

Non-inferiority of a home-based videoconference physical training program in comparison with the same program administered face-to-face in healthy older adults: the MOTION randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: older adults often fail to reach the recommended amount of physical activity to prevent the age-related decline in metabolic, cardiorespiratory and muscular function. Effective home-based physical training programs could neutralise barriers preventing older adults from being active, and administration/supervision through videoconference may be an optimal solution. The present randomised controlled trial aimed to test the non-inferiority of training program administered through videoconference against the same program administered face-to-face in healthy older adults. Clinical evaluation of usefulness and effectiveness of sitting type continuous passive motion machines in patients with total knee arthroplasty: a study protocol for a single-blinded randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an important management strategy for patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) refractory to conservative management. Postoperative range of motion (ROM) exercise is important to recover patients' activities of daily living. Continuous passive motion (CPM) is a machine that provides passive ROM exercises of the knee joint in a pre-defined arc of motion. The short- and long-term effects of CPM exercise are controversial. We hypothesized that the inconsistent results of the CPM exercise are due to poor fitting of CPM machines and measurement errors. This

Finite element modeling to compare craniocervical motion in two age-matched pediatric patients without or with Down syndrome: implications for the role of bony geometry in craniocervical junction instability.

OBJECTIVE: Instability of the craniocervical junction (CCJ) is a well-known finding in patients with Down syndrome (DS); however, the relative contributions of bony morphology versus ligamentous laxity responsible for abnormal CCJ motion are unknown. Using finite element modeling, the authors of this study attempted to quantify those relative differences. METHODS: Two CCJ finite element models were created for age-matched pediatric patients, a patient with DS and a control without DS. Soft tissues and ligamentous structures were added based on bony landmarks from the CT scans. Ligament stiffn

Investigating the feasibility and acceptability of real-time visual feedback in reducing compensatory motions during self-administered stroke rehabilitation exercises: A pilot study with chronic stroke survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Homework-based rehabilitation programs can help stroke survivors restore upper extremity function. However, compensatory motions can develop without therapist supervision, leading to sub-optimal recovery. We developed a visual feedback system using a live video feed or an avatar reflecting users' movements so users are aware of compensations. This pilot study aimed to evaluate validity (how well the avatar characterizes different types of compensations) and acceptability of the system. METHODS: Ten participants with chronic stroke performed upper-extremity exercises under three

Motion and dural sac compression in the upper cervical spine during the application of a cervical collar in case of unstable craniocervical junction-A study in two new cadaveric trauma models.

BACKGROUND: Unstable conditions of the craniocervical junction such as atlanto-occipital dislocation (AOD) or atlanto-axial instability (AAI) are severe injuries with a high risk of tetraplegia or death. Immobilization by a cervical collar to protect the patient from secondary damage is a standard procedure in trauma patients. If the application of a cervical collar to a patient with an unstable craniocervical condition may cause segmental motion and secondary injury to the spinal cord is unknown. The aim of the current study is (i) to analyze compression on the dural sac and (ii) to determine

Brain Activation by H1 Antihistamines Challenges Conventional View of Their Mechanism of Action in Motion Sickness: A Behavioral, c-Fos and Physiological Study in Suncus murinus (House Musk Shrew).

Motion sickness occurs under a variety of circumstances and is common in the general population. It is usually associated with changes in gastric motility, and hypothermia, which are argued to be surrogate markers for nausea; there are also reports that respiratory function is affected. As laboratory rodents are incapable of vomiting, Suncus murinus was used to model motion sickness and to investigate changes in gastric myoelectric activity (GMA) and temperature homeostasis using radiotelemetry, whilst also simultaneously investigating changes in respiratory function using whole body plethysmo
