The Role of Digital X-Ray in Curative Effect and Nursing Evaluation of Cervical Spondylotic Radiculopathy.

The present study attempted to analyze the features of atlanto-occipital radiograph in patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy or vertebral artery type. In order to reduce the interference of human factors and the measurement error as much as possible, this experiment adopts the blind design and analyzes the digital format X-ray films by using the computer software ImageJ. Because the tangent line between the outer plates of the anterior and posterior margin of the foramen magnum was not accurately located on the X-ray film, the angle formed by the line between the saddle dorsal slope

Maternal known drug allergy and long-term neurological hospitalizations of the offspring.

PROBLEM: Drug allergies are increasingly common. Immunological factors, implicated in many neurological diseases, also influence an individual's susceptibility. We sought to ascertain a possible association between maternal drug allergy and long-term neurological-related hospitalizations in the offspring. METHOD OF STUDY: This is a population-based cohort analysis, comparing the long-term risk of neurological-related hospitalization, involving a predefined set of ICD9 codes as recorded in hospital records, of children born to mothers with and without drug allergies. Deliveries occurred betwee

Sleep-related disorders and their relationship with MRI findings in multiple sclerosis.

Sleep-related disorders have been reported to have a higher prevalence in multiple sclerosis (MS) than in the general population. They are often undervalued for the presence of more severe physical problems and the occurrence at night, without a direct observation in common clinical practice, but if not recognized and treated they can negatively affect the quality of life causing daytime drowsiness and worsening fatigue. Sleep related disorders most commonly reported in MS are as follows: insomnia, sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD), restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movemen

[Neurological disorders in the narrative works of Benito Pérez Galdós].

INTRODUCTION: Benito Pérez Galdós was a realistic writer. As such, he was devoted to displaying reality in its full complexity. He shared the traits of experimental medicine of Claude Bernard (Introduction à l'étude de la médecine expérimentale). The writer was a close friend of famous contemporary doctors (Gregorio Marañón, Manuel Tolosa Latour), had textbooks with neurological content, and was familiar with Charcot. METHODS: With this background, we have foreseen neurological descriptions in his works. To search for them, we have reviewed three paramount novels: Fortunata y Jacinta, La de B

[Non-epileptic motor paroxysmal phenomena in wakefulness in childhood].

Paroxysmal events in childhood are a challenge for pediatric neurologists, given its highly heterogeneous clinical manifestations, often difficult to distinguish between phenomena of epileptic seizure or not. The non-epileptic paroxysmal episodes are neurological phenomena, with motor, sensory symptoms, and/or sensory impairments, with or without involvement of consciousness, epileptic phenomena unrelated, so no electroencephalographic correlative expression between or during episodes. From the clinical point of view can be classified into four groups: motor phenomena, syncope, migraine (and a

Relationship between finger movement characteristics and brain voxel-based morphometry.

BACKGROUND: Aging is the most significant risk factor for dementia. Alzheimer's disease (AD) accounts for approximately 60-80% of all dementia cases in older adults. This study aimed to examine the relationship between finger movements and brain volume in AD patients using a voxel-based reginal analysis system for Alzheimer's disease (VSRAD) software. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with AD at the Center for Comprehensive Care and Research on Memory Disorders were included. The diagnostic criteria were based on the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association. A finger-tapping device was u

Low-frequency oscillations in cortical level to help diagnose task-specific dystonia.

Task-specific dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that abnormal contractions of muscles result in the twisting of fixed postures or muscle spasm during specific tasks. Due to the rareness and the pathophysiology of the disease, there is no test to confirm the diagnosis of task-specific dystonia, except comprehensive observations by the experts. Evidence from neural electrophysiological data suggests that enhanced low frequency (4-12 Hz) oscillations in the subcortical structure of the globus pallidus were associated with the pathological abnormalities concerning β and γ rhythms in mot

UNLABELLED: Essential tremor is a dominant hereditary disorder with incomplete penetration manifested in action, postural tremor with no signs of parkinsonism, cerebellar lesions or other neurological signs [1]. The diagnosis of essential tremor is established on the basis of the clinical picture, and is greatly variable and insufficiently defined [5]. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study concerned patients with the diagnosis of essential tremor established by the International Association for Tremor Studies in 1995 where tremor was classified into definite++, possible and probable [6]. An adaptive fMRI paradigm of direction-specific, time-critical grip-force transitions.

Rapid transitions between force states, including fast increases and rapid releases, are fundamental to voluntary movement and everyday object interaction. Converging evidence from movement disorders suggests that rapid force reduction can be disproportionately impaired relative to force production, motivating the hypothesis that these transition directions rely on partly distinct control mechanisms. Brain imaging studies suggest direction-sensitive neural contributions, but existing paradigms make it difficult to determine whether differences between force production and force reduction refle

Clinicians' views on a patient decision aid for deep brain stimulation in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: For people with Parkinson's disease (PD), deciding whether to pursue deep brain stimulation (DBS) has become increasingly complex. Evidence suggests current approaches to collaborative decision-making may fall short of accepted standards. Thus, a decision support intervention, such as a patient decision aid (PtDA) may be warranted. PtDAs have been shown to improve patients' knowledge, expectations, and participation in decision-making for other, similar healthcare decisions. We therefore sought to assess neurologists' awareness of, and experience using, PtDAs, and to solicit thei

Plasma p-tau217 Versus p-tau181 in Parkinson's Disease: Differential Associations with Alzheimer's Disease-Related Neurostructural Changes and Cognitive Function.

BACKGROUND: Plasma phosphorylated-tau at threonine-217 (p-tau217) and threonine-181 (p-tau181) are scalable, minimally invasive biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. In Parkinson's disease (PD), AD co-pathology may contribute to its clinical heterogeneity. However, the existing literature has predominantly focused on p-tau181, with comparatively limited investigation of p-tau217. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to evaluate plasma p-tau217 and p-tau181 as biomarkers of AD co-pathology across the PD cognitive spectrum, relative to a cohort of dementia-free older adults. METHODS: Plasma p-tau

The Median Preoptic Nucleus is a Key Site for Estradiol Regulation of Sleep-Wake Behaviors in Females Rats.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Women experience more sleep disruptions than men, particularly during hormonal transitions such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. This study investigated the role of estradiol (E2) in regulating sleep-wake behavior in female rats and identified the brain regions involved. METHODS: Using an exogenous E2 replacement model in ovariectomized rats, we assessed changes in sleep-wake patterns via EEG/EMG telemetry. The effects of E2 and progesterone, selective estrogen receptor agonists, and direct brain infusions of E2 and receptor antagonists were evaluated. RESULTS: E2 admi

Prenatal stress alters mouse offspring dorsal striatal development and placental function in sex-specific ways.

Prenatal stress is a risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, how early stress modification of brain development contributes to this pathophysiology is poorly understood. Ventral forebrain regions such as dorsal striatum are of particular interest: dorsal striatum modulates movement and cognition, is altered in NDDs, and has a primarily GABAergic population. Here, we examine effects of prenatal stress on adult movement, cognition, and dorsal striatum neurobiology in mice using striatal-dependent behavioral assays, immunohistochemis

Expanding the Genetic and Phenotypic Spectrum of DYT-VPS16: The Importance of Splice-Site Variants.

BACKGROUND: DYT-VPS16, an early-onset isolated dystonia caused by variants in the VPS16 gene, has been reported in fewer than 70 patients. METHODS: We explored the clinical and genotypic spectrum of DYT-VPS16 by investigating early-onset dystonia patients with VPS16 variants discovered in our large Biodatabank and through gene-matching initiatives. Patient samples were analyzed by exome/Sanger and RNA/cDNA sequencing. RESULTS: We identified 16 previously unreported DYT-VPS16 patients (7 male, median age at onset [AAO]: 12 years). Patients with initial leg involvement had an AAO more than 10

The Impact of Bilateral Cerebellar Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Balance Control in Healthy Young Adults.

Cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been shown to influence movement functions, but little is known about the specific effects of stimulation polarity on balance control. This study investigated the impact of bilateral cerebellar tDCS on balance functions as a function of stimulation polarity. In this randomized, controlled trial, thirty-nine healthy young adults were assigned to one of three groups: right anodal/left cathodal cerebellar stimulation (AC group), right cathodal/left anodal cerebellar stimulation (CA group), and a control sham group. Each participant und
