Fifty-two Trichosporon strains isolated from Gabonese female patients 15-60 years, were studied. The identity of these strains was established by two different methods: the method proposed by Guého et al. (1992), based on mycological criteria, and a slide agglutination method performed with monospecific antisera prepared in our laboratory. The black yeast Hortaea werneckii is known to be a causative agent of human tinea nigra but is also found in the environment. Strains from dissimilar sources were studied by polymerase chain reaction fingerprinting of nuclear DNA, using primers annealing to repetitive and random sequences. In patients with AIDS and recurrent oropharyngeal candidosis results of biotyping and serotyping were compared with antifungal susceptibility testing. Biotype B1 was found predominantly with 44.3% from 169 C. albicans isolates. Serotype A was seen in 150/169 C. albicans isolates. No close correlation between high MIC values (> or = 25 micrograms/ml) for C. albicans isolates against fluconazole nor a change to a particular biotype or serotype has been observed in recurrences of oral candidosis.

A total of 143 cerebrospinal and serum samples, from proven and suspected cases of cryptococcosis, were concurrently examined using a recently introduced enzyme immunoassay (EIA Premier, Meridian Diagnostics, Inc., Cincinnati, OH, USA) and three latex agglutination (LA) procedures (Immunomycologics, Inc., Norman, OK, USA; IBL, Inc., Cranbury, NJ, USA and a non-commercial LA test). After a brief review of cryptococcosis in dogs and cats from the literature from 1980 to 92, three cases in dogs (two epidemiologically strictly connected) and two in cats are reported. A case of renal zygomycosis due to Absidia corymbifera in an heroin addict suffering from AIDS (phase IV C2) is described. Diagnosis was by histopathology after nephrectomy, but A. corymbifera was isolated several times from urine and from the exudate from a fistula in the surgical wound. After amphotericin B treatment (1.5 g overall dose) clinical cure and negative cultures were obtained. No relapses were observed until death 1 year later from Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.

An unusual endobronchial zygomycosis due to Cunninghamella bertholletiae in a leukaemic patient is reported. Following bypass operation, fungal infection developed. The patient died on day 7 after surgery as a result of long-term immunosuppressive treatment and haemodynamic complications.

The authors report 16 cases of cutaneous sporotrichosis observed in the province of Bari, southern Italy, since 1978. While no more than 55 cases have been documented in other European countries in the last 30 years, in Italy 58 cases (present series included) have been recorded in the same time period. Furthermore, 42 of them (73.7%) originated from Apulia. This unexpectedly high incidence rate in Italy, and in Apulia in particular, provides evidence of the important role played by this area in the ecoepidemiology of sporotrichosis in Europe.

Studies on the prevalence of tinea pedis, a frequently encountered dermatophytic infection, have been conducted mostly in swimmers although people who regularly practise other types of physical activities may also have a high rate of clinical or subclinical infection. Thermomucor indicae-seudaticae Subrahmanyam et al. was found for the first time growing as commensal associated with pityriasis versicolor on the skin of a 25-year-old man living in a small village near Pune, Maharastra, India. The clinical observations and morphological characters are presented. A small percentage of zygospores was found to germinate in situ but further stages of development could not be found.

Clinical and epidemiological aspects of 41 cases of mycetoma seen in São Paulo city from January 1978 to December 1989 are presented. Twenty-eight cases (68%) were caused by actinomycetes, while 13 (32%) were caused by true fungi. In only 22 (78%) actinomycetoma cases was it possible to identify the agent. Nocardia brasiliensis, by far the commonest actinomycete isolated, was responsible for 13 cases. Subcutaneous zygomycosis developed in 90% of mice killed from 1 to 9 weeks following subcutaneous inoculation of spores from Absidia corymbifera. Peripheral blood neutrophils (PMN) from patients with paracoccidioidomycosis killed and digested Paracoccidioides brasiliensis much less than did PMN from normal individuals or from patients with other diseases. However, deficiency in killing ability was less specific than digestive deficiency and correlated poorly with it. We conclude that the capacities of PMN to digest and kill P. brasiliensis are not intimately related phenomena, and that in paracoccidioidomycosis the key deficiency of neutrophil function is that of digestion of P. brasiliensis.

A 31-year-old male who had been suffering from ichthyosis vulgaris developed hyperkeratosic lesions on the palms and soles and ungual alterations of both hands and feet. These lesions were resistant to topical corticosteroid and emollient cream treatments and were found to be caused by Trichophyton rubrum. Association of ichthyosis vulgaris and dermatophytosis--both very common disorders--is to our knowledge a very rare event.

During the years 1981-1990 Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequent causative agent of dermatophytic infections in Northern Greece, especially in cases of tinea pedis, cruris, corporis, and unguium, as well as dermatophytosis of the hands. Between sexes there was a prevalence in women in tinea pedis and toenail infections. Men were particularly infected in the groin, the hands and the face. The MIC values of the antifungal drug ketoconazole were evaluated on 66 Candida albicans strains. These strains were isolated from 26 HIV-1 infected patients with oral recurrent candidosis. Each episode of oral candidosis observed in these patients was orally treated with ketoconazole (200 mg/day) until the clinical disappearance of the lesions. Prophylactic treatment with human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (hG-CSF) affords significant protection against systemic aspergillosis or pulmonary aspergillosis in neutropenic (cyclophosphamide-treated) mice but not in cortisone-treated animals. Cryptococcosis does not respond to hG-CSF therapy. Our data show that granulocytes play an important role in the immune defense against aspergillosis, but not against cryptococcosis. Combined treatment using hG-CSF and conventional antimycotics shows a significant beneficial effect in systemic or pulmonary aspergillosis.
