The authors report a series of 86 intracranial ependymomas. The origin of the tumor was supratentorial in 53 cases, infratentorial in 33. All patients underwent surgery and most of them had also radiation therapy. The operative mortality rate was 25%. Five year survival rate was 31%. Better prognosis was recorded for low grade tumors. The location of the tumor, total or incomplete surgical excision had no influence concerning long-term survival. This is a retrospective review of 328 consecutive patients with histologically confirmed gastric adenocarcinoma diagnosed in one centre between 1974 and 1984. Of these patients, 128 (39 per cent) had a curative resection, 32 (9.8 per cent) had a palliative resection, 33 (10.0 per cent) had a gastro-enterostomy, 26 (7.9 per cent) had a Celestin tube inserted, 58 (17.7 per cent) had a laparotomy alone, and 51 (15.5 per cent) had no surgical procedure. We have presented a brief discussion of WHO International Histological Classification of Testicular Germ Cell Tumors. This classification divides the tumors into those of one histologic type and those of more than one type. Seven basic histological categories are recognized: seminoma, spermatocytic seminoma, embryonal carcinoma, yolk sac tumor, polyembryoma, choriocarcinoma and teratoma. Granulocytic sarcoma is an unusual form of tumefaction caused by acute granulocytic leukemia. On rare occasions, the lesion precedes the leukemic phase and presents as a mass with a normal peripheral white cell count. This report describes the initial manifestation of granulocytic sarcoma by vaginal cytology in a 39-year-old female with Down's syndrome. Six days after admission, the patient died of acute peritonitis following spontaneous perforation of the bowel. The usefulness of serum thyroglobulin (Tg) assay in the follow-up of differentiated thyroid carcinomas has been evaluated in 109 subjects divided into two groups. Group 1 included 64 patients who had undergone total thyroid ablation. In 40 of the 41 patients in complete remission serum Tg was undetectable during replacement therapy (TSH below 5 microunits/ml). A 67-year-old man with prostate cancer presented with acute polymyositis and vocal cord paralysis as a result of mediastinal lymphadenopathy. His clinical course was unusual, with the development of a malignant pleural effusion, supraclavicular adenopathy, and osteolytic bone lesions. Urologic symptoms developed only pre-terminally, and osteoblastic bone metastases were not documented. This case suggests that prostate cancer need not have a simple natural history.

Reported herein is the case of a 70-year old woman with metastatic breast carcinoma presenting as linitis plastica of the ascending colon. The breast tumor was diagnosed nine years previously. The clinical, roentgenographic and pathologic features of colonic linitis plastica and the preoperative diagnostic difficulties are discussed. There is no difference in the morphologic features of primary and secondary linitis plastica. The latter may result from anaplastic carcinoma of the stomach, gallbladder or breast.

Nuclear diameters of breast cancer cells obtained by aspiration cytology from 245 patients were measured by ocular micrometry. The nuclei of 50 benign lesions were also measured. Cancers with 80% or more of their nuclei larger than 12 mu were classified as "large nuclear type" (LN). Those with nuclei of 12 mu or less were considered "small nuclear type" (SN).
