In today's digital world, we face an overwhelming influx of information daily. Information Visualisation (InfoVis) serves as a promising approach to alleviate this "information overload" issue by providing timely, effective, and adaptive visual representations. Despite its potential, previous research has under-explored the critical role of users' cognitive states in facilitating more natural interactions. This article bridges this research gap by first presenting a comprehensive review of current methodologies for assessing cognitive states through neurophysiological signal analysis. Specific

Stroke survivors commonly experience deficits in postural control and motor function, significantly impacting their independence and quality of life. Core Stability Training (CST) has emerged as a promising intervention to address these challenges. This review explores the multifaceted mechanisms by which CST promotes recovery, including: Biomechanical: CST strengthens the core musculature, providing a stable foundation for limb movement and optimizing force transmission throughout the kinetic chain. Neurophysiological: CST drives neural plasticity through repetitive, task-specific sensorimoto

OBJECTIVE: The vestibulo-ocular reflex is essential for maintaining visual stability during head movements. Individual neurophysiological characteristics, such as hand dominance, may influence vestibular responses through hemispheric lateralisation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of hand dominance on functional vestibulo-ocular reflex performance using the Functional Head Impulse Test.
METHODS: Fifty-eight healthy volunteers were classified as right- or left-handed using the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory. Functional Head Impulse Test reading scores were obtained during passive ri

Spatial disorientation represents a clinically meaningful vulnerability during aging and is an early manifestation along the Alzheimer's disease continuum. Understanding how aging-related central nervous system (CNS) changes affect the neural computations required for spatial perspective taking (SPT) is essential for characterizing early neurodegenerative processes. In this study, older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) completed a simplified map-based SPT paradigm while electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded. Although behavioral accuracy was

Accurately assessing pain remains challenging due to its inherently subjective nature, highlighting the need for normative and objective neural indicators to support pain diagnosis. Using large-scale electroencephalography (EEG) datasets (N = 936), the present study establishes normative values for laser-evoked brain responses (LEP) and develops a predictive model of perceived pain intensity. Three major findings emerged. First, we characterized the typical EEG features elicited by nociceptive laser stimuli and constructed their normative reference ranges using normative modeling. Second, with

INTRODUCTION: Clear role definitions in performing and interpreting neurophysiological and neuroimaging procedures are essential for patient safety and diagnostic accuracy. There is currently no comprehensive overview of the international landscape of health professionals responsible for these tasks. In the present review, we aimed to summarize local practices for electroencephalography (EEG), brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial Doppler (TCD), and focused ultrasound stimulation (FUS).
METHODS: We systematically searched scientific lite

Adaptive neuromodulation offers a path toward personalized neuropsychiatric treatment by allowing therapy to respond to clinically meaningful neurophysiological and behavioral changes. Its clearest clinical precedents are responsive neurostimulation for epilepsy and adaptive deep brain stimulation for movement disorders. Both rely on signals that can be measured reliably and linked directly to stimulation. Psychiatric disorders pose a different problem: symptoms are heterogeneous, evolve over multiple timescales, and are observed only indirectly through noisy and incomplete measurements. Artif

Milk-derived extracellular-vesicles (mEVs) have emerged as a promising natural nanocarriers for nutraceutical and therapeutic applications, owing to their rich cargo of bioactive proteins, lipids, microRNAs, and metabolites, coupled with their inherent biocompatibility and stability. Their unique ability to withstand gastrointestinal degradation and cross biological barriers, such as blood-brain-barrier, while eliciting minimal immunogenicity provide a distinct advantage over synthetic delivery systems. Furthermore, mEVs can also be engineered or enriched with functional molecules, enabling th

Parkinsonism-dystonia Type 2 (PKDYS2) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by SLC18A2 variants affecting the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2). We report the first genetically confirmed Iranian patient, an 18-month-old boy presenting with profound developmental delay, axial hypotonia, limb hypertonia, dystonia, oculogyric crises, ptosis, and autonomic dysfunction. Brain MRI, metabolic studies, and neurophysiological evaluations were normal. Whole-exome sequencing identified a novel homozygous canonical splice-site variant in SLC18A2 (NM_003054.6:c.1071-2A > G), confirmed by Sa

Low back pain (LBP) remains one of the most prevalent and disabling musculoskeletal conditions worldwide, shaped by interacting mechanical, neurophysiological, inflammatory, vascular, and behavioral factors. Conventional care often relies on generalized exercise programs and episodic, predominantly subjective assessment, which can underrepresent inter-individual heterogeneity and longitudinal change. Recent bioengineering advances enable continuous, multimodal monitoring of objective correlates of function-neuromuscular activation and coordination (sEMG/polyEMG), movement patterns and activity

Alzheimer's disease (AD) develops silently for years before symptoms emerge, making early identification of at-risk individuals essential for prevention trials and early intervention. We tested whether combining neurophysiological, imaging, and blood biomarkers improves prediction of progression to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in cognitively unimpaired older adults with a family history of AD (n = 102; 31 progressors; mean follow-up of 5.9 years). Magnetoencephalography, magnetic resonance imaging, plasma biomarkers, and amyloid and tau positron emission tomography each captured complementa

Inner speech (IS), or imagined speech without overt articulation, is a promising target for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) aimed at restoring communication in individuals with severe speech impairments, such as locked-in syndrome. Foundation models (FMs), typically trained using self-supervised learning (SSL) on large-scale datasets, offer new opportunities for learning transferable and robust representations from neural signals. This mini review provides an overview of FM-based approaches for IS decoding using non-invasive neuroimaging modalities, including functional magnetic resonance ima

This review provides a practical approach to evaluating and managing patients presenting with numbness and pain in the extremities. It emphasizes that careful history-taking and neurological examination remain the foundation of anatomic localization before imaging or electrophysiological studies are considered. The review summarizes the epidemiology, differential diagnosis, appropriate laboratory testing and neurophysiological investigations, indications for specialist referral, and current treatment strategies. Particular attention is given to distinguishing among nociceptive pain, neuropathi

Tinnitus with normal hearing suggests central mechanisms, yet stage-specific brain network dynamics remain unclear. This study investigated stage-specific brain network patterns in normal-hearing tinnitus patients using electroencephalography (EEG) microstate and dynamic functional network (DFN) analyses. Resting-state EEG was recorded from 45 participants (15 acute tinnitus, <6 months; 15 chronic tinnitus, ≥6 months; and 15 healthy controls). Results showed that acute tinnitus involved enhanced salience network engagement and reduced central executive network participation, with transitions s

Paired associative stimulation (PAS) is a non-invasive protocol involving repeated stimulus pairs to activate two cortical areas alternately, inducing Hebbian-like plasticity. However, its neurophysiological impacts remain unclear. To determine the changes that occur in the brain during PAS, brain activity during PAS must be measured and distinguished from the electromagnetic artifacts produced by the stimulation. Here, we present a novel dataset of electroencephalography (EEG) measurements during PAS with an inter-stimulus-interval of 25 ms (PAS25, expected to induce long-term potentiation-li

AIM: To investigate the possible neuroprotective effect of low-intensity ultrasound (US) application against diabetic neuropathy. METHODS: Adult male wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups as control, untreated diabetic and US-treated diabetic. Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg) to the rats and verified by the presence of hyperglycemia (> 250 mg/dl). US was applied to sciatic nerve at a power density of 1.5 W/cm2 and a frequency of 1 MHz for 3 min/day for 5 weeks over a 5 cm2 skin surface. Blood glucose, insulin and HbA1c levels

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are major neurodegenerative disorders with characteristic EEG alterations. While most prior studies have focused on eyes-closed (EC) EEG, where stable alpha rhythms support relatively high classification performance, eyes-open (EO) EEG has proven particularly challenging for AD, as low-frequency instability obscures the typical spectral alterations. In contrast, FTD often remains more discriminable under EO conditions, reflecting distinct neurophysiological dynamics between the two disorders. To address this challenge, we propose a CNN

Subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) provides unprecedented spatiotemporal precision for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD), allowing for direct real-time state-specific adjustments. Inspired by findings from optogenetic stimulation in mice, we hypothesized that STN-DBS can mimic dopaminergic reinforcement of ongoing movement kinematics during stimulation. To investigate this hypothesis, we delivered DBS bursts during particularly fast and slow movements in 24 patients with PD. Our findings reveal that DBS during fast movements enhanced future movement speed more than DBS during
