Discriminative Prior - Prior Image Constrained Compressed Sensing Reconstruction for Low-Dose CT Imaging.

X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been widely used to provide patient-specific anatomical information in the forms of tissue attenuation. However, the cumulative radiation induced in CT scan has raised extensive concerns in recently years. How to maintain reconstruction image quality is a major challenge for low-dose CT (LDCT) imaging. Generally, LDCT imaging can be greatly improved by incorporating prior knowledge in some specific forms. A joint estimation framework termed discriminative prior-prior image constrained compressed sensing (DP-PICCS) reconstruction is proposed in this paper. Thi

Acoustic reflexes are common but not pervasive: evidence from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999-2012.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether acoustic reflexes are pervasive (i.e. sufficiently prevalent to provide 95% confidence of at least 95% prevalence) and might be invoked in damage-risk criteria (DRC) and health hazard assessments (HHA) for impulsive noise. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analyses of a nationally-representative study. STUDY SAMPLE: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data collected between 1999 and 2012 were used. Over 60 thousand reflex traces obtained from 15,106 NHANES participants were used in the study, along with demographic, audiometric, health and exposure

Measurement of the sound intensity during suction of middle-ear fluid following myringotomy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine noise intensity during middle-ear aspiration in order to evaluate whether levels can be potentially harmful. METHODS: In this prospective, observational study, middle-ear effusion was aspirated following myringotomy using a suction instrument with a probe tube microphone. Sound pressure levels and duration were measured, and frequency domain analysis was performed. RESULTS: Forty-four ears were analysed, consisting of 20 with mucoid effusion, 11 with serous effusion and 13 with no effusion. Maximum peak sound intensity ranged from 84 to 157 dB. Half of the ears (50 pe

Phase-sensitive optical coherence tomography using an Vernier-tuned distributed Bragg reflector swept laser in the mouse middle ear.

Phase-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PhOCT) offers exquisite sensitivity to mechanical vibration in biological tissues. There is growing interest in using PhOCT for imaging the nanometer scale vibrations of the ear in animal models of hearing disorders. Swept-source-based systems offer fast acquisition speeds, suppression of common mode noise via balanced detection, and good signal roll-off. However, achieving high phase stability is difficult due to nonlinear laser sweeps and trigger jitter in a typical swept laser source. Here, we report on the initial application of a Vernier-tuned

Informational masking of complex tones in dyslexic children.

In complex auditory scenes, perceiving a given target signal is often complicated by the presence of competing maskers. In addition to energetic masking (EM), which arises because of peripheral interferences between target and maskers at the cochlear level, informational masking (IM), which takes place at a more central level, is also responsible for the difficulties encountered in typical ecological auditory environments. While recent research has led to mixed results regarding a potential speech-perception-in-noise deficit in dyslexic children, most of them actually investigated EM situation

Distributions of pure-tone hearing threshold levels among adolescents and adults in the United States by gender, ethnicity, and age: Results from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Cumulative distributions of audiometric pure-tone thresholds for a non-occupationally noise-exposed population vary with demographic characteristics (e.g. gender, ethnicity, age), tested ear, and stimulus frequency. However, commonly-used audiometric databases either do not take these differences into account, or account for them using data not easily generalized to the US population. The objective of this study was to obtain distributions that are generalizable to the US population without significant history of exposure to occupational noise. Cumulative pure tone threshold distributions from

The risk of hospitalisation for infectious pneumonia in mineral dust exposed industries.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to elucidate the relationship between industries characterised by mineral dust exposure and infectious pneumonia. METHODS: The authors applied a retrospective record linkage design and used the nationwide specific health examination database and identified industries where mineral dust exposure occurs and a control group composed of workers who had been exposed to noise-only during a 2000-2004 period. The database was matched with National Health Insurance claim records to identify pneumonia admissions from 2000 to 2005. The indirectly standardised adm

Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography in carotid artery disease: does automated image registration improve image quality?

Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a noninvasive imaging alternative to digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for patients with carotid artery disease. In DSA, image quality can be improved by shifting the mask image if the patient has moved during angiography. This study investigated whether such image registration may also help to improve the image quality of carotid MRA. Data from 370 carotid MRA examinations of patients likely to have carotid artery disease were prospectively collected. The standard nonregistered MRAs were compared to automatically linear, affine and

Influence of drilling on the distortion product otoacoustic emissions in the non-operated ear.

OBJECTIVE: To determine possible changes in the outer hair cell (OHC) function related to drill noise exposure. METHODS: Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) were measured at frequencies of f(2) = 2, 3, 4 and 5 kHz, and a frequency ratio f(1)/f(2) = 1.22. The f(1) and f(2) levels were delivered at 65 dB SPL. DPOAE amplitudes were compared in 13 patients both before and after mastoidectomy, and between these patients and 5 patients who underwent tympanoplasty. RESULTS: The DPOAE amplitudes were significantly decreased at 2 and 4 kHz (p = 0.01 and p = 0.013, respectively) immediate

Full of sound and fury, signifying something: the impact of autonomic arousal on EGM gambling.

An experiment was conducted to observe the influence of autonomic arousal on subsequent gambling behavior. Thirty-seven male and 32 female regular Electronic Gaming Machine (EGM) players were recruited through newspaper advertisements. Participants were randomly assigned to either: (1) a control condition, or (2) an experimental condition that introduced a loud white-noise event (80 db) at fixed 120 s intervals throughout the 5-min EGM gambling session. Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) measurements showed that the manipulation was successful in elevating autonomic arousal. The results showed diffe

Acute mechanical overstimulation of isolated outer hair cells causes changes in intracellular calcium levels without shape changes.

Impaired auditory function following acoustic overstimulation, or noise, is mainly reported to be accompanied by cellular changes such as damage to the sensory hair bundles, but changes in the cell bodies of the outer hair cells have also been described. To investigate more closely the immediate cellular responses to overstimulation, isolated guinea pig outer hair cells were subjected to a 200 Hz oscillating water jet producing intense mechanical stimulation. The water jet was aimed at the cell body of the isolated outer hair cell. Cell shape changes were studied using video microscopy, and in

Estimated effects of air pollution and space-time-activity on cardiopulmonary outcomes in healthy adults: A repeated measures study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution is known to affect both short and long-term outcomes of the cardiopulmonary system; however, findings on short-term outcomes have been inconsistent and often from isolated and long-term rather than coexisting and short-term exposures, and among susceptible/unhealthy rather than healthy populations. AIMS: We aimed to investigate separately the annual, daily and daily space-time-activity-weighted effect of ambient air pollution, as well as confounding or modification by other environmental (including noise) or space-time-activity (including total daily phys

Hearing of dentists in the long run: a 15-year follow-up study.

Pure tone audiograms from 68 dentists with a minimum of 10 yr in dental practice were taken in 1973 and a follow-up was carried out in 1988. The aim was to study whether the dental occupation carried a risk for hearing handicap or not. Allowance for age and sex was made by using the presbyacusis values of SPOOR as the reference. At the speech range of frequencies dentists did not differ from the reference. At higher frequencies of 4, 6, and 8 kHz dentists tended to have higher hearing thresholds than expected. At 6 kHz, both male and female dentists had highly significantly greater hearing thr

Music Modulates Awake Bruxism in Chronic Painful Temporomandibular Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: In this experimental study, we aimed to determine whether guided music listening (GML) - a music intervention based on models of mood mediation and attention modulation - modulates masticatory muscle activity and awake bruxism in subjects with chronic painful muscular temporomandibular disorders (TMD myalgia, mTMD), a condition causing a significant burden to patients, their families, and healthcare systems. BACKGROUND: Awake bruxism - a stress behavior characterized by clenching of the teeth - is a strong contributor to chronic mTMD. GML modulates psychological stress and motor re
