Evaluation of the orbit using contrast-enhanced radial 3D fat-suppressed T1 weighted gradient echo (Radial-VIBE) sequence.

OBJECTIVE: Contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed T1 weighted (T1W) two-dimensional (2D) turbo spin echo (TSE) and magnetization-prepared gradient echo (MPRAGE) sequences with water excitation are routinely obtained to evaluate orbit pathology. However, these sequences can be marred by artefacts. The radial-volume-interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) sequence is a motion-robust fat-suppressed T1W sequence which has demonstrated value in paediatric and body imaging. The purpose of our study was to evaluate its role in assessing the orbit and to compare it with routinely acquired sequences. ME

[German version of the de Morton mobility index. First clinical results from the process of the cross-cultural adaptation].

BACKGROUND: The English version of the de Morton Mobility Index (DEMMI) enables allied health professions in an inpatient setting to assess the mobility of geriatric patients in a reliable, valid, easy and fast way, without showing any floor or ceiling effects. The aim of this study was the DEMMI's cross-cultural adaption into German language with further analysis of some of its psychometric properties based on this process. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Translation was done in a multistage procedure following international recommendations. Within clinical pilot testing the DEMMI was routinely applie

Limited utility of MRA for acute bowel ischemia after portal venous phase CT.

PURPOSE: Mesenteric ischemia and ischemic colitis are uncommon but potentially life-threatening causes of acute abdominal pain. Portal venous phase computed tomography (CT) is routinely ordered in the emergency room setting for abdominal pain, but subsequent MR angiography may be requested for additional evaluation of the mesenteric vasculature. We compare the concordance of CT and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) for acute bowel ischemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients who underwent contrast-enhanced MRA for bowel ischemia after having undergone CT evaluation within the prece

Geometry-independent assessment of renal volume in polycystic kidney disease from magnetic resonance imaging.

Total renal volume (TRV) is an important quantitative indicator of the progression of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). The Consortium for Radiologic Imaging Studies of Polycystic Kidney Disease proposes a method for TRV computation based on manual tracing and geometric modeling. We developed a fast and nearly-automated technique for kidney segmentation and automatically compute TRV. In this study we aim to compare TRV estimates derived from these two different approaches. The highly-automated technique for the analysis of MR images was tested on 30 ADPKD patients. TRV was

Part 3: Developing Methods of In Vivo MRI Measurement of Spinal Cord Displacement in the Thoracolumbar Region of Asymptomatic Subjects With Unilateral and Bilateral Straight Leg Raise Tests.

STUDY DESIGN: Controlled radiological study. OBJECTIVE: Verify (1) whether conus medullaris displacement varies with the range of hip flexion and (2) whether the acquired data support the "principle of linear dependence." SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: We have previously quantified normal displacement of the conus with unilateral and bilateral straight leg raise (SLR) and have described the "principle of linear dependence." However, we have since effected methodological advances that have produced data that surpass previous studies. METHODS: Ten asymptomatic volunteers were scanned with a 1.5-

Fine mapping of bone structure and strength QTLs in heterogeneous stock rat.

We previously demonstrated that skeletal structure and strength phenotypes vary considerably in heterogeneous stock (HS) rats. These phenotypes were found to be strongly heritable, suggesting that the HS rat model represents a unique genetic resource for dissecting the complex genetic etiology underlying bone fragility. The purpose of this study was to identify and localize genes associated with bone structure and strength phenotypes using 1524 adult male and female HS rats between 17 to 20 weeks of age. Structure measures included femur length, neck width, head width; femur and lumbar spine (

Interobserver variability of CT angiography for evaluation of aortic annulus dimensions prior to transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).

OBJECTIVE: Assessment of aortic annulus dimensions prior to transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is crucial for accurate prosthesis sizing in order to avoid prosthesis-annulus-mismatch possibly resulting in complications like valve dislodgement, paravalvular regurgitation or annulus rupture. Contrast-enhanced multidetector computed tomography allows 3-dimensional assessment of aortic annulus dimensions. Only limited data exist about its interobserver variability. METHODS: In 100 consecutive patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis (51 male, BMI 27±5kg/m(2), age 81±7 years, h

The CT scout view: does it need to be routinely reviewed as part of the CT interpretation?

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to determine whether the CT scout view should be routinely reviewed by comparing diagnostic information on the scout view with that provided by the correlative CT study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two radiologists blinded to history and CT findings reviewed retrospectively 2032 scout views. All cases with major findings (defined as any abnormality that would prompt additional diagnostic tests or require management) were correlated with the CT study, other imaging study, or medical record when necessary by a third radiologist to determine the validity of t

Complications After Facial Injections With Permanent Fillers: Important Limitations and Considerations of MRI Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Soft-tissue fillers have become more prevalent for facial augmentation in the last 2 decades, even though complications of permanent fillers can be challenging to treat. An investigative imaging tool could aid in assessing the nature and extent of these complications when clinical findings are ambiguous. OBJECTIVES: The authors analyzed the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the assessment of delayed-onset complications after injection of patients with permanent fillers. METHODS: Thirty-two patients with complications related to facial fillers were evaluated in this pro

Distal radial traction radiographs: interobserver and intraobserver reliability compared with computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Distal radial fracture characterization with standard radiographs has been consistently poor, leading to a widespread use of computed tomography (CT) with this injury. Traction radiographs have recently been shown to improve interobserver reliability for fracture characterization and treatment. Our goal was to compare five traction radiographs and CT images to evaluate the interobserver and intraobserver reliability of individual fracture fragment identification, the correct identification of fracture fragments on CT imaging compared with traction images, and the consistency of tre

Cysts of the anterior horn lateral meniscus and the ACL: is there a relationship?

OBJECTIVE: Parameniscal cysts have a very high association with meniscal tears in all locations except the anterior horn lateral meniscus (AHLM). The common insertion of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the AHLM root may provide a pathway for disease. The purpose of our study was to determine if cysts of the ACL are the origin of cysts adjacent to the AHLM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiology reports of all magnetic resonance (MR) examinations of the knee over a 7-year period were searched for "cyst", "ganglion", and "ganglia". Two fellowship-trained musculoskeletal radiologists independ
