Patient Perceptions of OCD Care in General Psychiatric Inpatient Units.

A significant proportion of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are admitted to inpatient hospital facilities. This most often occurs within general psychiatric units, given the scarcity of options specialized to OCD. This study surveyed 69 adults with self-reported OCD who had experienced 1 or more inpatient hospitalizations, with the goal of exploring perceptions of OCD-related care in general inpatient settings. Overall, participants reported negative views of their providers' attention to OCD-specific needs. Nearly half indicated that none of their providers appeared proficie

The impact of perfectionism on treatment outcomes of mental health disorders: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials.

Perfectionism is associated with multiple mental health disorders, but its role as a prognostic factor in treatment outcomes remains debated. This systematic review assessed the impact of perfectionism on mental health disorder treatment outcomes. Seven databases were searched from to 11 October 2024, for randomised controlled trials that examined the relationship between perfectionism and treatment outcomes. A citation search was also performed. Sixteen randomised controlled trials with 2197 participants were included. Of these, fifteen explored how baseline perfectionism impacted primary men

Spatiotemporal Brain Transcriptomics Reveal Risk Gene Hot-Spots in Major Neuropsychiatric Disorders.

The temporal onset of polygenic brain disorders has been closely linked to the developmental dynamics of genome-wide risk gene expression. In this study, we systematically characterized the spatiotemporal expression patterns of these risk genes and their relevance in differentiating major neuropsychiatric disorders. We analyzed genome-wide risk gene sets for Intelligence Quotient (IQ), Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Tourette's Syndrome (TS), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Anorexia Nervosa (ANO), Neuroticism, Panic disorder, Major Depressiv

[Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Mental Health in Adolescents].

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine-metabolic disorder in female adolescents, and it is associated with metabolic, cardiovascular, and reproductive complications. Recent findings also suggest an association with psychiatric pathology, both affected patients and their offspring. In this update, we synthesized the recent literature on mental health in women and adolescents with PCOS through a systematic search in PubMed, Epistemonikos, and Scielo for articles published in the last 5 years. There is a significantly increased risk of anxiety disorders, depression, eating

The Association between Autism Spectrum Disorder and Precocious Puberty: Considering Effect Modification by Sex and Neuropsychiatric Comorbidities.

Limited knowledge is available about the association between autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and precocious puberty. Our study examined the association between the two medical conditions and effect modification by sex and neuropsychiatric comorbidities in a nationwide population. To compare the risk of precocious puberty between ASD and non-ASD cases, we conducted a Cox regression analysis using ASD as the exposure and time to precocious puberty as the outcome. We adjusted for sex, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), tic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety diso

Transcranial sonography in psychiatry as a potential tool in diagnosis and research.

OBJECTIVES: During the last two decades transcranial sonography (TCS) of the brain parenchyma evolved from a pure research tool to a clinical relevant neuroimaging method especially in Parkinson's disease and related movement disorders. The aim of this systematic review is to update and summarise the published TCS findings in psychiatric disorders and critically address the question whether TCS may be a valuable tool for the diagnosis or differential diagnosis of psychiatric disorders similarly to the field of movement disorders. METHODS: This paper provides detailed information about the per

Development and community-based validation of eight item banks to assess mental health.

There is a need for precise but brief screening of mental health problems in a range of settings. The development of item banks to assess depression and anxiety has resulted in new adaptive and static screeners that accurately assess severity of symptoms. However, expansion to a wider array of mental health problems is required. The current study developed item banks for eight mental health problems: social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, drug use, psychosis and suicidality. Behavioral symptoms and sleep problems in children with anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are frequently associated with childhood behavioral problems and mental illnesses such as anxiety disorder. To identify promising behavioral targets for pediatric anxiety disorder therapy, we investigated the associations between specific sleep and behavioral problems. METHODS: We conducted retrospective reviews of 105 patients aged 4-12 years who met the DSM-IV criteria for primary diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (n = 33), separation anxiety disorder (n = 23), social phobia (n = 21), or obsessive compulsive disorder (n = 28). Frequency and correlates of anxiety and mood disorders among TB- and HIV-infected Zambians.

We determined the frequency and correlates of current common mental disorders (CMDs) in a consecutive series of 649 adult patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), tuberculosis (TB) or both receiving treatment at 16 primary health care centres across Zambia. Data on socio-demographic variables, clinical disease features, anxiety and mood disorders were collected. The frequency of any anxiety disorder (AD) was 30.8% and major depressive disorder (MDD) 11.3%. Although differences by disease group did not reach statistical significance, rates of suicidality (34.8%) and panic disorder (4.1

A population-based family study of DSM-III generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: A recent meta-analysis provides evidence that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is familial. However, two of the key studies relied on subjects who were self-selected or recruited from the clinic setting, thereby limiting generalizability. METHOD: We conducted a family study of GAD in which probands and controls came from a community sample originally enrolled in a prevalence study in Edmonton, Canada. One hundred and sixty probands, 764 controls and 2386 first-degree relatives (FDRs) were interviewed using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS); lifetime diagnoses were made acc

[Tourette syndrome: from a neurological clinic to a multidisciplinary approach].

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a chronic, familial disorder, characterized by involuntary motor and phonic tics that wax and wane in severity. TS is frequently accompanied by behavioral, emotional and cognitive problems that are often more incapacitating than the tic disorder itself. After a review of the disorder, in which the multidisciplinary aspects are emphasized, the article describes the clinical features of 60 children with TS, 49 boys and 11 girls, aged 13 +/- 3.6 years (mean SD), treated in the Neuropediatric Unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center. The children described had both motor and v

The empirical status of cognitive-behavioral therapy: a review of meta-analyses.

This review summarizes the current meta-analysis literature on treatment outcomes of CBT for a wide range of psychiatric disorders. A search of the literature resulted in a total of 16 methodologically rigorous meta-analyses. Our review focuses on effect sizes that contrast outcomes for CBT with outcomes for various control groups for each disorder, which provides an overview of the effectiveness of cognitive therapy as quantified by meta-analysis. Large effect sizes were found for CBT for unipolar depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, social pho

Personality disorder comorbidity with major depression and response to treatment with sertraline or citalopram.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of DSM-III-R personality disorders in depressed patients treated in primary care, and to examine the effect of sertraline or citalopram on the diagnosis of personality disorders. A total of 308 patients with a major depressive disorder were assessed with the Swedish version of the Structured Clinical Interview for Personality Disorders (SCID) screen questionnaire, before and after 24 weeks double-blind treatment with sertraline (50-150 mg/day) or citalopram (20-60 mg/day). Following treatment, significant reductions in the frequency of

Chronic intracranial neural dynamics forecast treatment response and therapeutic engagement during deep brain stimulation for OCD.

Clinical improvement following psychiatric neuromodulation often requires weeks to months, creating prolonged uncertainty during treatment optimization. Neural biomarkers could reduce this uncertainty by forecasting treatment outcome, providing early evidence of therapeutic engagement, and objectively tracking clinical response. We analyzed nearly 120,000 patient-hours of chronic intracranial recordings from 24 patients undergoing ventral capsule/ventral striatum deep brain stimulation for treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder. Before stimulation initiation, circadian neural featur
