In numerous neurodegenerative disorders, neurofilaments, especially their subunits such as the Neurofilament light chain (NfL), are recognized as significant biomarkers of axonal injury when increased in blood or cerebrospinal fluid. Dominant optic atrophy (DOA) is characterized by a degeneration of retinal ganglion cells leading to axonal injury. Aim of this study was the evaluation of serum NfL (sNfL) levels in patients with DOA. sNfL concentration was quantified by a Single Molecule Array (Simoa) SR-X analyzer. Primary aim was the comparison of sNfL between patients with OPA1-DOA confirmed

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) offers a promising approach for detecting subclinical microvascular changes in glaucoma suspects before structural or functional damage becomes apparent. This scoping review synthesizes evidence from 11 studies (2014-2025) to evaluate OCTA's effectiveness in identifying early glaucomatous alterations. Findings consistently demonstrate reduced vessel density (VD) in glaucoma suspects compared to healthy controls, with whole-image VD averaging 51.3% versus 55.5% (P<0.001), respectively. OCTA-derived parameters, particularly peripapillary and macula

BACKGROUND: The eyes and the central nervous system (CNS) develop from the same embryonic tissue which explains why retinal changes have been observed in various neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. These changes can be visualized in vivo on a cellular and subcellular level using optical coherence tomography (OCT). This article summarizes which retinal changes occur and how these could be used as potential biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases.
OBJECTIVE: The article gives an overview of the literature on the relationship between neurodegeneration, OCT-based retinal characteristics

MEK inhibitors (MEKi) represent innovative and promising treatments for managing manifestations of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). To mitigate potential ophthalmic side effects, such as MEKi-associated retinopathy (MEKAR), patients undergoing MEKi therapy routinely receive ophthalmology evaluations. Our study aims to assess the necessity of this regular screening within a predominantly pediatric NF1 population by examining the occurrence of ocular adverse events (OAE). A retrospective study evaluated 45 NF1 patients receiving MEKi. Inclusion criteria included baseline and follow-up examination

Optic Atrophy (OA) can be associated with the development of microcystic macular edema (MME) in the perifoveal retinal inner nuclear layer (INL). We aimed here to retrospectively determine the prevalence of MME in patients with non-glaucomatous OA in our tertiary ophthalmology department between 2015 and 2020. We then examined how MME affected the thicknesses of the different retinal layers and the differences in demographic and clinical characteristics between those patients who developed MME and those who did not. A total of 643 eyes (429 patients) were included (mean age 45.9 ± 17.8 years,

Glaucoma is characterized by cupping of the optic disc, apoptotic degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons, and thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer, with patchy loss of vision. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is a major risk factor for hypertensive glaucoma and the only modifiable one. There is a need to find novel compounds that counteract other risk factors contributing to RGC degeneration. The oil derived from the wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris), also called Acebuche (ACE), shows powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and retinoprotective effe

In the early stages of Alzheimer-Perusini's disease (AD), individuals often experience vision-related issues such as color vision impairment, reduced contrast sensitivity, and visual acuity problems. As the disease progresses, there is a connection with glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) leading to retinal cell death. The retina's involvement suggests a link with the hippocampus, where most AD forms start. A thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) due to the loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) is seen as a potential AD diagnostic marker using electroretinography (ER

Glaucoma causes irreversible neuropathy, which, untreated, may lead to blindness. In this case-control study, we measured two-photon infrared (IR) light sensitivity in glaucomatous eyes to propose a new method to quantify the visual loss. In total, 64 patients were recruited with an equal distribution between glaucoma and control groups. Retinal sensitivity to IR light was assessed using a two-photon excitation device. A fundus-driven microperimeter was used to measure retinal sensitivity to visible light. The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness was quantified automatically with optical

BACKGROUND: Werner syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterised by premature aging. It is a typical hereditary progeroid syndrome that can be difficult to diagnose owing to its rarity and the similarity of some of its symptoms, such as juvenile cataracts, to other common ophthalmologic conditions. Early onset of bilateral cataracts is currently used as the ophthalmological feature for Werner syndrome; however, ophthalmologists often find performing a detailed examination of the medical history and genetic testing for Werner syndrome at the time of an ophthalmologic consultati

We assessed the retinal microvascular alterations detected by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in pediatric and juvenile craniopharyngioma (CP) patients with chiasmal compression. We included 15 eyes of 15 pediatric or juvenile CP patients and 18 eyes of 18 healthy subjects. The evaluation of vessel density from the superficial retinal capillary plexus (SRCP), the deep retinal capillary plexus, and the radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) segments was obtained by OCT-A. The association between vessel density measures and functional and structural measurements was also analyzed.

Pancreaticobiliary carcinomas is a highly malignant gastrointestinal tumor. Most pancreaticobiliary cancers arise from epithelial proliferation within the pancreaticobiliary ducts, referred to as pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasias (PanINs). Some PanINs are benign metaplasia, while others progress to invasive duct adenocarcinoma (IDAC). However, there is no standard program to diagnose the progression from PanINs to IDAC. In this study, we present a tri-modality imaging system, which integrates ultrasound (US), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) for pan

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has become a standard treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). However, in a considerable number of patients debilitating psychiatric side-effects occur. Recent research has revealed that external stimuli can alter the neurotransmitters' homeostasis in neurons, which is known as "neurotransmitter respecification". Herein, we addressed if neurotransmitter respecification could be a mechanism by which DBS suppresses the serotonergic function in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) leading to mood changes. We infused transgenic 5-HT-Cre (ePET
