Inkjet-printed drug-loaded temporary tattoos for personalized pediatric pain treatment.

Parents worldwide suffer from their children's frequent refusal to take their medicine - even creams and patches may be refused due to tedious application, painful removal, and caprice. However, children find decorative tattoos appealing. Hence, a personalized drug-loaded temporary tattoo as a novel pediatric dosage form is presented. As a showcase, a pain treatment prototype tattoo based on a lidocaine/prilocaine eutectic was developed. By employing piezoelectric inkjet printing of the drug onto a decorative motif, which can be chosen based on the child's personal preference, the drug content

Individuals with chronic pain using opioids: Challenging treatment choices, shared decision-makers, or risk-makers? A critical discourse analysis of Belgian policy documents.

Chronic pain, defined as pain persisting for more than three months, affects one in four Belgian adults. Treating chronic pain comprises challenges for patients and clinicians as the term encompasses diverse conditions such as fibromyalgia, migraine, and long-term pain without a known biomedical cause. Additionally, growing evidence highlights the limited efficacy of opioids in managing chronic non-cancer pain. This has prompted critical policy changes in pain management, including shifts away from opioid use. This study explores how Belgian policy documents depict patients, healthcare provide

Adjuvant Effect of Photobiomodulation in the Pain Relief and Healing of Ulcerative Lesions from Mammary Tuberculosis.

This case report describes the use of photobiomodulation (PBM) as a complementary therapy in a 45-year-old patient with mammary tuberculosis (TB). The patient received conventional treatment, including antibiotic therapy and analgesics. Three months after the diagnosis, breast pain persisted (Visual Analog Scale [VAS] score: 8), and the mammary lesions had not healed. Adjuvant treatment with PBM (660 nm and 808 nm lasers, 100 mW, 3,333 mW/cm2, 20 J per session) was performed over 12 sessions in 38 days. After four PBM sessions, the patient reported no pain (VAS score: 0) and stopped using anal

Literature Review: Mechanism, Indications, and Clinical Efficacy of Peripheral Nerve Stimulators in Lower Extremity Pain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Lower extremity pain is deemed by Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to be a significant source of chronic pain in adults. If not appropriately managed, patients are subjected to risks of prolonged musculoskeletal dysfunction, disruption to quality of life, and elevated healthcare expenditures. Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) has shown great potential in recent years demonstrating efficacy in multiple diagnoses ranging from acute post-surgical pain to complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). This study seeks to delineate efficacy of peripheral neuromodulation i

Opioid Monitoring in Clinical Settings: Strategies and Implications of Tailored Approaches for Therapy.

This review emphasises the importance of opioid monitoring in clinical practice and advocates for a personalised approach based on pharmacogenetics. Beyond effectively managing pain, meticulous oversight is required to address concerns about side effects, specially due to opioid-crisis-related abuse and dependence. Various monitoring techniques, along with pharmacogenetic considerations, are critical for personalising treatment and optimising pain relief while reducing misuse and addiction risks. Future perspectives reveal both opportunities and challenges, with advances in analytical technolo

[Meta-analyses-Explained my means of examples from anesthesia and pain medicine].

Meta-analyses are a central part of systematic reviews. The term meta-analysis describes the statistical methods to summarize the results of the available scientific studies providing the highest possible evidence. In medicine, meta-analyses aim to guide clinical decisions. This article provides an overview of the necessary work steps. The classical meta-analysis summarizes the results of randomized controlled trials that compare an intervention against a control intervention. This is illustrated by means of an example from a Cochrane Review on videolaryngoscopy in comparison to direct laryngos

Opioid-Free Analgesia Provides Pain Control Following Thumb Carpometacarpal Joint Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that an opioid-free (OF), multimodal pain management pathway for thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint arthroplasty would not have inferior pain control compared with that of a standard opioid-containing (OC) pathway. METHODS: This was a single-center, randomized controlled clinical trial of patients undergoing primary thumb CMC joint arthroplasty. Patients were randomly allocated to either a completely OF analgesic pathway or a standard OC analgesic pathway. Patients in both cohorts received a preoperative brachial plexus block utilizing 30 mL of 0.5% ropivacaine that

New legislation in New Jersey reduced opioid use among trauma patients.

PURPOSE: In New Jersey, politicians have emphasized the need to attenuate the ongoing opioid epidemic as opioid use disorder can lead to addiction and, in many cases, mortality. New legislation (New Jersey Senate Bill 3) was enacted in 2017 to reduce opioid prescription from 30 days to 5 days for acute pain in both inpatient and outpatient healthcare settings. Therefore, we sought to evaluate if the enactment of the bill influenced the consumption of opioid pain medication at an American College of Surgeons-verified Level I Trauma Center. METHODS: Patients from 2016 to 2018 were compared for
