Placental baseline conditions modulate the hyperoxic BOLD-MRI response.

OBJECTIVES: Human pregnancies complicated by placental dysfunction may be characterized by a high hyperoxic Blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) MRI response. The pathophysiology behind this phenomenon remains to be established. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether it is associated with altered placental baseline conditions, including a lower oxygenation and altered tissue morphology, as estimated by the placental transverse relaxation time (T2*). METHOD: We included 49 normal pregnancies (controls) and 13 pregnancies complicated by placental dysfunction (cases), defined by a birth we

Orally administered fluorescein angiography for ultra-wide-field imaging: is a safe and effective modality across different age groups and fundus diseases?

PURPOSE: To comprehensively evaluate the clinical utility, imaging performance, and safety of orally administered fluorescein angiography (oral FA) combined with an ultra-wide-field imaging system in the diagnosis and management of fundus disorders. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 382 patients (676 eyes) aged 4-83 years, comprising 164 females and 218 males. All participants underwent oral FA after ingesting a weight-based dose of fluorescein sodium. Anonymized peak-phase images were independently graded by four retina specialists using a standardized three-parameter scoring system.

Treatable moments for smoking cessation in asthma and COPD: a nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation has proven to be the most effective non-pharmacological intervention to tackle poor outcomes in airway diseases. However, there is limited understanding of teachable/treatable moments (specific times when individuals may be particularly open to behavioural change) to support smoking cessation in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Therefore, we aimed to investigate which health events could create treatable moments for nicotine dependence in these patients. METHODS: Patients aged ≥18 years, chronically using medication for obstru

Cost of Cardiovascular Disease Event and Cardiovascular Disease Treatment-Related Complication Hospitalizations in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is among the costliest conditions in the United States, and cost-effectiveness analyses can be used to assess economic impact and prioritize CVD treatments. We aimed to develop standardized, nationally representative CVD events and selected possible CVD treatment-related complication hospitalization costs for use in cost-effectiveness analyses. METHODS: Nationally representative costs were derived using publicly available inpatient hospital discharge data from the 2012-2018 National Inpatient Sample. Events were identified using the principal Internati

A Clinico-Histopathological Study of Nail Dermatoses in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Introduction Nail disorders account for an important component of all dermatological conditions. Nail abnormalities can result from local pathology or systemic diseases. Pathologies can lead to pain and impaired fine touch and are aesthetically distressing. Clinical assessment of nail pathologies is seldom accurate; moreover, the limited available investigative modalities make it difficult to correctly diagnose the disorders. Nail biopsies provide crucial histological information, especially for nail-limited dermatoses, though they are infrequently used and technically challenging. Proper biop

Boosting Cosmeceutical Peptides: Coupling Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids to Pentapeptide-4 Originates New Leads with Antimicrobial and Collagenesis-Inducing Activities.

Following our previous reports on dual-action antibacterial and collagenesis-inducing hybrid peptide constructs based on "pentapeptide-4" (PP4, with amino acid sequence KTTKS), whose N-palmitoyl derivative is the well-known cosmeceutical ingredient Matrixyl, herein we disclose novel ionic liquid/PP4 conjugates (IL-KTTKS). These conjugates present potent activity against either antibiotic-susceptible strains or multidrug resistant clinical isolates of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species belonging to the so-called "ESKAPE" group of pathogens. Noteworthy, their antibacterial ac

In-Hospital Outcomes of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis.

Introduction Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasingly common among patients with other comorbid chronic conditions, particularly diabetes mellitus (DM). Yet, studies that explored the impact of comorbid diabetes on the outcomes of IBD are scanty. Therefore, this study aims to examine the outcomes of inflammatory bowel disease among hospitalized patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sampling (NIS) database from 2016 to 2018, we identified patients' records with a diagnosis of IBD using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes (

Evaluation of cardiopulmonary exercise test in the prediction of disease progression in systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is a widely used examination to predict the prognosis of many chronic pulmonary diseases, and it has also been tested in systemic sclerosis (SSc) with a focus on the development of pulmonary hypertension. CPET is a highly informative non-invasive tool that provides a more complex information than conventional lung function tests to predict the course of cardiopulmonary diseases, as it provides a general overview of the aerobic metabolism, influenced by pulmonary, cardiovascular and peripheral muscle function. The purpose of this investigation wa

Extra intestinal manifestations may increase the risk of synchronous and metachronous development of other extraintestinal manifestations in patients with Crohn's disease.

Although Crohn's disease (CD) affects the intestines, it is known to be a systemic disease rather than being limited to the intestines. Extra intestinal manifestations (EIMs) accompanying CD are reported at rates varying from 6 to 53%. While EIM negatively affects the quality of life of some patients, some EIMs, such as primary sclerosing cholangitis and thromboembolism, can be life-threatening. Although more than one EIM can occur simultaneously, the development of one EIM increases the probability of developing another EIM. There are few studies on how EIMs affect each other. The aim of this

Twelve-month health status response after peripheral vascular intervention for femoropopliteal lesions using Zilver PTX databases focusing on the role of preprocedural health status, comorbid risks, and global setting.

OBJECTIVE: Tailoring resources of peripheral vascular interventions (PVIs) to those who stand to gain the most would allow for more equitable and value-based care. One way of evaluating the benefit of PVIs in patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease is evaluating their health status and identifying predictors of health status response 12 months after the intervention. METHODS: Patients who underwent femoropopliteal PVI between March 2005 and August 2008 from the Zilver PTX randomized trial and single-arm study were combined into a single cohort for secondary data analysis. Total-Body Perfusion Imaging with [11C]-Butanol.

Tissue perfusion can be affected by physiology or disease. With the advent of total-body PET, quantitative measurement of perfusion across the entire body is possible. [11C]-butanol is a perfusion tracer with a superior extraction fraction compared with [15O]-water and [13N]-ammonia. To develop the methodology for total-body perfusion imaging, a pilot study using [11C]-butanol on the uEXPLORER total-body PET/CT scanner was conducted. Methods: Eight participants (6 healthy volunteers and 2 patients with peripheral vascular disease [PVD]) were injected with a bolus of [11C]-butanol and underwent
