[Behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia as the presenting symptom of corticobasal degeneration].

INTRODUCTION: The behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia is characterised by progressive social, cognitive and personality deterioration associated with several molecular pathologies of frontotemporal lobar dementia (FTLD): FTLD-tau, FTLD-TDP and FTLD-FUS. Its diagnosis requires pathological studies. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old male, with a three-year progressive history of behavioural disorder, apathy, poor language skills, perseveration, lack of empathy, bulimia and executive dysfunction. Neuroimaging revealed right-dominant frontal cortical atrophy, and a single-photon emission tomo

Associations of Neuroticism and Impulsivity with Binge Eating in a Nationally Representative Sample of Adolescents in the United States.

Binge eating behavior is a public health concern with serious physical and mental health consequences. Certain personality traits have been found to contribute to the development of eating disorders in clinical samples of youth, but little is known about associations between personality traits and binge eating in the general adolescent population. We examined the associations of neuroticism and impulsivity-both independently and in combination-with lifetime prevalence of binge eating, using nationally representative, cross-sectional data from the National Comorbidity Survey: Adolescent Supplem

Developmental pathways to adolescent cannabis abuse and dependence: child maltreatment, emerging personality, and internalizing versus externalizing psychopathology.

Child maltreatment is strongly associated with adolescent psychopathology and substance abuse and dependence. However, developmental processes unfolding from childhood into adolescence that delineate this trajectory are not well understood. The current study used path analysis in a structural equation modeling framework to examine multiple mediator models, including ego control, ego resiliency, and internalizing and externalizing symptoms to investigate this developmental process. Participants were 415 children, assessed across 3 waves of data, (i.e., at ages 7 to 9, 10 to 12, and 13 to 15). T

Genome-wide association study of personality traits in bipolar patients.

OBJECTIVE: Genome-wide association study was carried out on personality traits among bipolar patients as possible endophenotypes for gene discovery in bipolar disorder. METHODS: The subscales of Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ) were used as quantitative phenotypes. The genotyping platform was the Affymetrix 6.0 SNP array. The sample consisted of 944 individuals for TCI and 1007 for ZKPQ, all of European ancestry, diagnosed with bipolar disorder by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV criteria.

Heart rate variability in the assessment and biofeedback training of common mental health problems in children.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the beat-to-beat variations in heart rate related to the work of autonomic nervous system. It may serve as a psychophysiological indicator for arousal, emotional state and stress level. We used this parameter in both the assessment and biofeedback training, for dealing with five groups of common mental health problem in school children (anxious-phobic, somatoform, obsessive-compulsive, attention deficit hyperactivity and conduct disorders). The obtained results were compared with healthy children at the same age. In order to define the four main cha

The association between earlier age of first drink, disinhibited personality, and externalizing psychopathology in young adults.

Earlier age of first drink (AFD) of alcohol is associated with higher rates of alcohol abuse and dependence as well as a range of other externalizing problems. This study tested the hypotheses that in young adults earlier AFD is associated with [1] the common variance among externalizing problems (lifetime alcohol, marijuana, other drug, childhood conduct, and adult antisocial behavior problems) rather than being uniquely associated with alcohol problems, and [2] the disinhibited personality traits of social deviance and impulsivity, and that the association between earlier AFD and externalizi

Juvenile sex offenders: a complex population.

Individuals who engage in sexual offending behavior represent a heterogeneous population. Recent research has found some success in categorizing sexual offenders based on a number of variables, particularly the type of victim. For example, differences have been found between those offenders who victimize adults when compared with those who victimize children. However, the research in this area has been conducted predominantly with adult samples. As the adult sex offender literature has progressed, it has become evident that risk assessment, treatment effectiveness, and risk management are depe

Childhood abuse, mental healthcare utilization, self-harm behavior, and multiple psychiatric diagnoses among inpatients with and without a borderline diagnosis.

Although borderline personality disorder (BPD) has defined diagnostic criteria, a number of other clinical features are associated with this diagnosis. These features may include childhood histories of abuse (eg, sexual, physical, and emotional abuse; the witnessing of violence), high mental healthcare utilization, self-harm behavior, and polysymptomatic presentations that result in multiple Axis I diagnoses. Although each of these variables has been described in the empirical literature, only 1 other study has explored all 4 of these variables in a single study population--the Collaborative L

Examining the utility of a temperament model for modelling non-melancholic depression.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is currently modelled dimensionally, along severity, duration and recurrency dimensions. An alternative model allows dimensional expressions of temperament and personality to influence risk to onset as well as persistence. Here, we examine the utility of a temperament model. METHOD: A questionnaire assessing temperament dimensions and a number of depression variables was administered to a large routine general practice sample and with the temperament measure also completed by a small clinical sample. RESULTS: 'Anxious worrying' and 'irritable' dimensions were identified

Monosymptomatic hypochondriacal psychosis complicated by self-inflicted skin ulceration, skull defect and brain abscess.

Self-inflicted dermatoses are associated with personality disorders and psychoses, including monosymptomatic hypochondriacal psychosis (MHP), which is characterized by a delusion involving a particular hypochondriacal concern. We report an unusual case of MHP with severe mutilation of the skin complicated by a skull defect and brain abscess. The patient was a 66-year-old uneducated man who damaged his forehead repeatedly because he believed that a 'toxic root' in the forehead was the source of his general ailment. He admitted that the lesions were self-inflicted. There was no other evidence of

The effect of a history of conduct disorder in adult major depression.

This paper examines the impact of a history of conduct disorder on major depression in adulthood, including its symptomatology, comorbidity and response to tricyclic antidepressants. 103 subjects with DSM-III-R major depression were assessed for DSM-III-R axis I and II comorbidity, severity of depression, social functioning, general psychiatric symptomatology, early familial environment and family psychiatric history. 18 patients (17%) had a history of conduct disorder, 32 (31%) were subthreshold, and 53 (51%) had no childhood symptoms of conduct disorder. Depressed adults with a history of co

Psychological characteristics of patients with the irritable bowel syndrome.

The Eysenck Personality Inventory, the Middlesex Hospital questionnaire, and forearm blood-flow were used to measure aspects of psychological status in forty-one patients with the irritable bowel syndrome, who were compared in this respect with twenty-five matched psychoneurotic subjects and with a general population. The results show a positive association between psychoneurotic disorder and the irritable bowel syndrome.

Sex Differences in Psychopathology Following Potentially Traumatic Experiences.

IMPORTANCE: Various psychopathology may follow trauma; however, sex differences in these ranging manifestations of posttraumatic psychopathology remain understudied. OBJECTIVE: To investigate sex-specific incidence of posttraumatic psychopathology. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study of Danish national health registries included a cohort of individuals who experienced a potentially traumatic event (PTE) from 1994 to 2016. Individuals were further categorized by presence of any pretrauma psychopathology. A comparison group of individuals who experienced a non

Personality functioning in adolescents: exploring the links with childhood maltreatment types and internalizing and externalizing difficulties.

BACKGROUND: The reconceptualization of the personality disorder model brought by the DSM-5 and ICD-11 introduced the level of personality functioning as the main criterion of PD, which encompasses a set of intrapsychic functions necessary for self-other understanding in interpersonal contexts. Research interest has been growing in examining the relationship between childhood traumatic experiences and personality functioning, predominantly with adult populations; however, there is a notable scarcity of studies exploring these associations in adolescents. AIMS: The aim of the present study was

Affective super-traits and/or individual patterns: a variable-centered and a person-centered approach of primary emotional aspects of personality.

Theoretical approaches of personality structure are diverse. We examine the primary emotional aspects of personality as the correspondence of two mainstream constructs: the lexically-based Big Five (BIG5) and the biologically-based Affective Neuroscience Theory (ANT) within two approaches. In the variable-centered approach (VCA), our aim is to identify affective super-traits; while in the person-centered approach (PCA) to uncover latent profile patterns. 240 participants (177 women, 63 men) completed the 112-item affective neuroscience personality scales (ANPS), and the 44-item Big Five Invent

Correlates of the Dark Tetrad.

This study explored demographic, ideological, self-rating and personality traits correlates of the Dark Tetrad (DT4) which measures Narcissism (Special), Machiavellianism (Crafty), Psychopathy (Wild), and Sadism (Mean) traits. In total, 447 adults completed three tests: a bright-side, work-related, personality test (HPTI: High Performance Type Indicator), a dark-side test (Short Dark Tetrad) and a number of self-ratings. Correlations and regressions showed that all four dark traits were associated with low Adjustment (Neuroticism), but also with high Risk-Taking and Competitiveness (low Agreea

A Farewell to the Narcissism Epidemic? A Cross-Temporal Meta-Analysis of Global NPI Scores (1982-2023).

OBJECTIVE: Several recent accounts have failed to replicate the so-called Narcissism Epidemic, suggesting potential influences of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in 2008 as a reason for narcissism trend reversals. Here, we provide evidence for narcissism test score changes from 1982 to 2023. METHODS: We investigated self-report data on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) from 1105 studies (k = 1621, N = 546,225) using precision-weighted cross-temporal meta-analysis. RESULTS: Data collection years were meaningfully negatively associated with narcissism scores in virtually all analy

Self as both target and judge: Who has an easier time knowing their own personality?

OBJECTIVE: The past two decades have established that people generally have insight into their personalities, but less is known about how and why self-knowledge might vary between individuals. Using the Realistic Accuracy Model as a framework, we investigate whether some people make better "targets" of self-perception by behaving more consistently in everyday life, and whether these differences have benefits for psychological adjustment. METHOD: Using data from the Electronically Activated Recorder (n = 286), we indexed self-knowledge as the link between self-reports of personality and actual

Social expectations as a possible mechanism for adult personality change: Limited empirical evidence for the social investment principle.

OBJECTIVE: Personality traits change in both mean levels and variance across the life span but the mechanisms underlying these developmental trends remain unclear. Social Investment Principle (SIP) suggests that social expectations drive personality changes in adulthood. Accordingly, we tested whether differences between personality traits in social expectations for them can explain their different change trajectories in young adulthood. METHODS: A pool of 257 personality items was used to measure personality traits' means and variances (N = 1096), and levels expected by friends, partners and
