Green space exposure predicts manic episodes in bipolar disorder: one year longitudinal analysis using smartphone-derived GPS data.

Urban living is linked to increased psychiatric morbidity, while green spaces may protect mental health via stress-buffering effects. Yet, the role of green space exposure in the onset of affective episodes in bipolar disorder (BD) remains unclear. Using 12 months of GPS data from 29 participants with BD-I/II, we quantified daily exposure to green spaces (green area & NDVI; covariates: population density & imperviousness). Affective status (euthymia, depressive or (hypo)manic episode) was assessed via SCID-based biweekly clinician interviews (26 assessments per participant). Multilevel logisti

Interkingdom sensing of fungal tyrosol promotes bacterial antifungal T6SS activity in the murine gut.

Type VI secretion systems (T6SSs) are molecular machines used by bacteria to release effectors that target either host cells, competing bacteria or fungi. Regulatory mechanisms underlying antifungal T6SS activity remain unexplored. Here we show, using mouse infection with wild-type and T6SS mutant bacteria, that T6SS activity of the enteropathogen, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis (Yptb), reduces fungal prevalence in the gut microbiota and has direct activity on Candida albicans. Screening of bacterial effector mutant strains, and structural and biochemical analyses identify TfeC as an antifungal c

Beyond homogeneity: charting the landscape of heterogeneity in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric electroencephalography.

Electroencephalography (EEG) has been thoroughly studied for decades in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric research. Yet its integration into clinical practice as a diagnostic/prognostic tool remains unachieved. We hypothesize that a key reason is the underlying patient's heterogeneity, overlooked in EEG research relying on a case-control approach. We combine high-density EEG with normative modeling to quantify this heterogeneity using two well-established and extensively investigated EEG characteristics -spectral power and functional connectivity- across a cohort of 1674 patients with attenti

Mechanistic Insights into the Role of Extracellular Vesicles at the Bacterial-Host Interface.

Bacterial and human cells produce extracellular vesicles (EVs) in response to diverse stimuli, e.g., toxins, oxidative stress, nutrient depletion, or high cell density. Here, we describe a cocultivation platform that allows recovery of mixed extracellular vesicles (mix-EVs) produced simultaneously by both cell types. We investigated interactions between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Neisseria meningitidis) and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The production of the mix-EVs population decreased with

Mitigation of sulfide adsorption in natural gas by silanized stainless steel: insights from density functional theory.

This study employs Density Functional Theory (DFT) to investigate the inhibition of sulfide adsorption in natural gas through the use of silanized stainless steel. Various adsorption models were developed to explore the interactions between hydrogen sulfide, thionyl carbon, methyl mercaptan, and ethyl mercaptan with silanized stainless steel surfaces. Calculations revealed positive adsorption energies of 1.55 eV, 1.87 eV, 1.56 eV, and 1.60 eV, respectively, indicating a non-spontaneous adsorption process. Furthermore, the adsorption configurations of these sulfur compounds on the surface close

Non-coding RNAs in osteoarthritis and osteoporosis-related hip fractures: molecular biomarkers for precision diagnosis and prognosis.

As individuals age, bone density declines and the likelihood of fractures increases, particularly in women experiencing menopause. Hip fractures, the most severe consequence of osteoporosis, are becoming more common due to the aging global population and a 1-3% annual increase in hip fractures in most regions. The specific epigenetic mechanisms underlying the onset of osteoporosis and its related fractures remain predominantly unexamined. Research indicates that epigenetic modifications can elevate the risk of osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and bone fractures, especially hip fractures, by linkin

Gene clusters linked to insulin resistance identified in a genome-wide study of the Taiwan Biobank population.

This pioneering genome-wide association study examined surrogate markers for insulin resistance (IR) in 147,880 Taiwanese individuals using data from the Taiwan Biobank. The study focused on two IR surrogate markers: the triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG:HDL-C) ratio and the TyG index (the product of fasting plasma glucose and triglycerides). We identified genome-wide significance loci within four gene clusters: GCKR, MLXIPL, APOA5, and APOC1, uncovering 197 genes associated with IR. Transcriptome-wide association analysis revealed significant associations between these

The role of circulating anti-aging αKlotho in cardiac aging.

Aging contributes significantly to the deterioration of cardiac function and increases the prevalence of heart failure, including those with reduced or preserved ejection fraction. Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is highly prevalent in the elderly population and it has become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in this group. This commentary discusses the important findings and broader implications of the study by Daneshgar et al. on the role of the anti-aging hormone α-Klotho in alleviating diastolic dysfunction in the aged heart via Sirtuin1 (Sirt1)-mediated pat

Metabolic syndrome in youth - A fresh look at an old problem.

The clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors, commonly referred to as metabolic syndrome (MetS), has become increasingly prevalent among youth <18 years of age. Although its definition in this population is often debated, as in adults MetS is typically characterized by central obesity, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia (elevated triglycerides and low high density lipoprotein cholesterol), and glucose dysregulation, with insulin resistance as the common link. MetS frequently originates in childhood, tracks into adulthood, and is associated with comorbidities such as fatty liver disease and po

Is it advisable for Asians to drink milk, especially those at risk of osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis poses a significant health challenge globally, with particularly high rates anticipated in the Asian region in the forthcoming years. This region has been identified as a potential hotspot for increasing incidences of osteoporosis. Unfortunately, the Asian population has a low consumption of milk and dairy products, which may exacerbate this situation. A deficiency of calcium ions and inadequate consumption of milk and other dairy products significantly exacerbate the risk of developing osteoporosis. Milk, which is a rich source of protein, vitamin D, and various essential mineral

Solvent and alkyl substitution effects on charge-transfer mediated triplet state generation in BODIPY dyads: a combined computational and experimental study.

Donor-acceptor dyads based on BODIPYs have been recently employed to enhance the formation of triplet excited states with the process of spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC) which does not require introduction of transition metals or other heavy atoms into the molecule. In this work we compare two donor-acceptor dyads based on meso-naphthalenyl BODIPY by combining experimental and computational investigations. The photophysical and electrochemical characterization reveals a significant effect of alkylation of the BODIPY core, disfavoring the SOCT-ISC mechanism for the eth

Protracted neurobehavioral and microRNA deficits by acute nicotine dependence in mice.

Acute dependence to nicotine can rapidly elicit withdrawal symptoms. However, protracted withdrawal signs from acute nicotine dependence have not been explored. Here, we demonstrate that acute nicotine dependence induces delayed neurobehavioral defects in mice. Acute nicotine dependence led to impairment in passive avoidance but without changes in innate anxiety or learning/memory. Concurrently, F-actin level in the dorsal striatum was aberrantly increased, striatal dendritic spine density was reduced, and striatal neural population activity was diminished after acute nicotine dependence. The

Genomic epidemiology of early SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Genomic epidemiology has helped reconstruct the global and regional movement of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, there is still a lack of understanding of SARS-CoV-2 spread in some of the world's least developed countries (LDCs). METHODS: To begin to address this disparity, we studied the transmission dynamics of the virus in Bangladesh during the country's first COVID-19 wave by analysing case reports and whole-genome sequences from all eight divisions of the country. RESULTS: We detected > 50 virus introductions to the country during the pe

Marked increase in bone mineral density with oral phosphate and calcitriol in tumour-induced osteomalacia.

Patients with osteomalacia have a low bone mineral density (BMD) and are often misdiagnosed as osteoporosis. A marked increase in BMD is noticed following successful treatment of osteomalacia. The biochemical hallmark of tumour-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is hypophosphatemia. Patients with TIO often have severe hypophosphatemic osteomalacia and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry may demonstrate low BMD. Surgical removal of the phosphatonin-secreting lesion restores serum phosphate, corrects osteomalacia and is associated with a dramatic increase in BMD. We report two patients with TIO and low BMD

Optimization of cardiovascular risk factor management in patients with BCR::ABL1 negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms, current knowledge, and perspectives.

The exact prognostic role of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in patients with BCR::ABL1 negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) remains unknown as it is often masked by other MPN-related features that bear strong prognostic impact on thrombotic risk. Therefore, current MPN treatment is not primarily guided by presence of CV risk factors. Treatment of CV risk factors in MPN patients usually mirrors that from the general population, despite the fact that CV risk factors in MPNs have their own specificities. Moreover, the optimal target levels for different metabolic deflections in

Research advances in crosstalk between muscle and bone in osteosarcopenia (Review).

Osteosarcopenia is a burgeoning geriatric syndrome and a familiar disease among older individuals. It is characterized by reduced skeletal muscle mass and bone mineral density due to osteoporosis and sarcopenia. Its clinical manifestations include reduced physical performance and individuals becoming prone to falls during the aging process resulting in fractures and hospitalization, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients and increases the risk of death. Due to the aging social structure of the global population, the morbidity of osteosarcopenia is expected to continue to incre

Long-Term Effects of Antiseizure Medications.

Most patients with epilepsy will benefit from seizure control with one of an array of chronic antiseizure medications. Knowledge of the potential long-term effects of these medications is critical to prevent adverse consequences on overall health. Antiseizure medications vary in their capacities to affect the brain and peripheral nerves, hormones, bone mineralization, cardiovascular risk, renal health, hepatic, hematological, and dermatological systems. Understanding of pathophysiology and population risk has evolved, although most of the data available are still on older generation antiseizur

Current Analysis of Skeletal Phenotypes in Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Down syndrome (DS) is caused by trisomy 21 (Ts21) and results in skeletal deficits including shortened stature, low bone mineral density, and a predisposition to early onset osteoporosis. Ts21 causes significant alterations in skeletal development, morphology of the appendicular skeleton, bone homeostasis, age-related bone loss, and bone strength. However, the genetic or cellular origins of DS skeletal phenotypes remain unclear. RECENT FINDINGS: New studies reveal a sexual dimorphism in characteristics and onset of skeletal deficits that differ between DS and typically developing ind
