Accuracy and precision of oscillometric blood pressure in standing conscious horses.

BACKGROUND: Arterial blood pressure (BP) is a relevant clinical parameter that can be measured in standing conscious horses to assess tissue perfusion or pain. However, there are no validated oscillometric noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP) devices for use in horses. ANIMALS: Seven healthy horses from a teaching and research herd. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy and precision of systolic arterial pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in conscious horses obtained with an oscillometric NIBP device when compared to invasively measured

Endotracheal cuff pressure changes with change in position in neurosurgical patients.

BACKGROUND: Placement of a cuffed endotracheal tube for the administration of general anesthesia is routine. The cuff of the endotracheal tube is inflated with air to achieve an adequate seal to prevent micro-aspiration. Over inflation of the cuff can decrease the mucosal perfusion, leading to pressure necrosis and nerve palsies. Inadequate seal can lead to micro aspiration. So the cuff pressure has to be monitored and kept within the prescribed limits of 20-30 cms of water. AIM OF THE STUDY: To observe the effect of different positions on the endotracheal cuff pressure in patients undergoing

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy With Instillation: Review of Evidence and Recommendations.

Negative pressure wound therapy with instillation (NPWTi) and dwell time is an adjunctive treatment modality for selected complex wounds. Because of the greater amount of research now available, a multidisciplinary expert panel comprising the fields of podiatry, plastic and general surgery, burn treatment, infectious diseases, and orthopedics was convened on July 11, 2015, to produce a summary of the data and recommendations on the use of NPWTi. The panel members each reviewed available published literature on NPWTi in the PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases from 1 January 2012 up u

The relationship between fibromyalgia and pressure pain threshold in patients with dyspareunia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the number of tender points, pressure pain threshold and presence of fibromyalgia among women with or without dyspareunia. METHODS: The present cross-sectional study included 40 patients with dyspareunia and 30 healthy controls. The participants were asked if they had engaged in sexual intercourse during the previous four weeks, and dyspareunia was rated from 0 to 3 based on the Marinoff Dyspareunia Scale. A pressure algometer (dolorimeter) was used to measure the pressure pain threshold. Fibromyalgia was diagnosed based on the 1990 American College of Rheumatology crit

Intracapsular Pressures After Stable Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis.

PURPOSE: Stable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) has been shown to have a lower rate of avascular necrosis than unstable SCFE. A recent study found increased intracapsular hip pressures in the setting of unstable SCFE, thus increasing the risk of osteonecrosis. The purpose of this study was to measure the intracapsular pressure in stable SCFE and compare it to the intracapsular pressure in normal hips and in unstable SCFE. METHODS: Thirteen hips with stable SCFE and 15 hips with unstable SCFE were identified. Using a side-bored needle, intracapsular hip pressures were measured at the

A review of the surgical management of heel pressure ulcers in the 21st century.

Heel ulceration, most frequently the result of prolonged pressure because of patient immobility, can range from the trivial to the life threatening. Whilst the vast majority of heel pressure ulcers (PUs) are superficial and involve the skin (stages I and II) or underlying fat (stage III), between 10% and 20% will involve deeper tissues, either muscle, tendon or bone (stage IV). These stage IV heel PUs represent a major health and economic burden and can be difficult to treat. The worst outcomes are seen in those with large ulcers, compromised peripheral arterial supply, osteomyelitis and assoc

Psycho-Neurological Status in Children with Malocclusions and Muscle Pressure Habits.

Non-nutritive sucking behaviors such as finger- and tongue-sucking, tongue thrust, lips- or cheek-sucking, nail-, lip- or tongue-biting and other pressure habits represent risk factors for malocclusion. The association between psycho-neurological disorders and different types of malocclusion in children with sucking habits was long studied. During neurological examination, many children with sucking habits are diagnosed as Minimal Cerebral Dysfunction or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) bearers. The aim of this study is to assess the psycho-neurological status and motor disorder

The role of transforming growth factor β1 in the regulation of blood pressure.

Although human association studies suggest a link between polymorphisms in the gene encoding transforming growth factor (TGF) β1 and differing blood pressure levels, a causative mechanism for this correlation remains elusive. Recently we have generated a series of mice with graded expression of TGFβ1, ranging from approximately 10% to 300% compared to normal. We have found that blood pressure and plasma volume are negatively regulated by TGFβ1. Of note, the 10% hypomorph exhibits primary aldosteronism and markedly impaired urinary excretion of water and electrolytes. We here review previous li

Deformation of the corona radiata and internal capsule in normal pressure hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The pathophysiology of the clinical manifestations in normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) remains obscure. Ventricular dilatation could generate forces on the paracentral fibers of the corona radiata (CR), hence interfering with their function and producing the classical clinical triad. The analysis of the regional displacement and deformation of the white matter bundles, forming the corona radiata and internal capsule, may clarify the relationship between ventricular dilatation and clinical manifestations in NPH. METHOD: An experimental finite element (FE) analysis wa

Transoral negative-pressure catheter drainage of a retropharyngeal and mediastinal abscess.

PURPOSE: A retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) is an extremely rare entity in adults that has a tendency to spread vertically and cause a mediastinal abscess. Traditionally, immediate aggressive drainage is recommended via a transcervical or transthoracic approach for the treatment of a retropharyngeal abscess with mediastinal extension. Here, we present a case of a retropharyngeal and mediastinal abscess using a transoral negative-pressure catheter drainage approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 24-year-old woman was admitted with a 4-day history of severe sore throat and painful swallowing. Computed t

The effect of oral care on intracranial pressure in critically ill adults.

A major goal in the care of patients with neurological problems is to prevent or minimize episodes of increased intracranial pressure (ICP). Elevations in ICP in response to nursing interventions have been acknowledged since the 1960s when ICP monitoring was first introduced in the clinical setting. Until recently, few studies have specifically examined the effect of oral care on ICP, and oral care and other hygiene measures were combined or not specified, prohibiting a direct interpretation of the influence of oral care alone on ICP. The purpose of this study was to describe the relationship

Food and drug administration regulation of drugs that raise blood pressure.

Although it is recognized that a systolic blood pressure (SBP) increase ≥ 2 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure (DBP) increase ≥ 1 mm Hg increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes in middle-aged adults, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lacks an adequate policy for regulating medications that increase blood pressure (BP). Some FDA reviewers consider a clinically significant increase in BP to occur only if a drug raises SBP ≥ 20 mm Hg or if a drug raises DBP ≥ 10 to 15 mm Hg. In recent years, numerous drugs have been regulated or taken off the market due to cardiovascular safety conce

Profile of interdialytic ambulatory blood pressure in a cohort of Chinese patients.

Management of hypertension is one of the fundamental interventions in dialysis patients. However, the profile of interdialytic blood pressure (BP) in Chinese dialysis patients remains elusive. We aim to investigate this issue as well as the effect of antihypertensive medication in this population. We performed 44-h ambulatory BP in 90 patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Patients were classified as 'dipping', 'non-dipping' or 'reverse-dipping' based on night/day ratio (N/D) of systolic BP on nondialysis day. The prevalence of blunted circadian BP pattern was strikingly high (92.2%), with more

Effects of lipid-lowering agents on inflammation, haemostasis and blood pressure.

In addition to the modification of the lipid profile, most lipid-lowering agents appear to modulate other atherogenic pathways. We summarize the effects of lipid-lowering agents on inflammation, hemostasis and blood pressure. We also discuss the potential contribution of these actions on cardiovascular disease prevention. Most lipid-lowering agents appear to exert anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic and antihypertensive effects. These pleiotropic actions appear to contribute to the reduction in cardiovascular events and deep venous thrombosis during statin treatment. Regarding other lipid-loweri

¹¹¹In-DTPA cisternography with SPECT/CT for the evaluation of normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Although new MR imaging techniques can provide high-resolution information on CSF dynamics and are not associated with ionizing radiation, SPECT/CT cisternography is a valuable alternative for those with contraindications to MR imaging. SPECT/CT cisternography combines functional and anatomic imaging to provide accurate and detailed information on CSF distribution to be used in conjunction with clinical findings for the diagnosis and evaluation of NPH, as illustrated in this case report.
