Sales and regulatory status of fixed dose combination psychotropic drugs in India: a retrospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence to support use of fixed dose combination (FDC) drugs in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to examine the sales and regulatory status of psychotropic FDCs in India, in the context of two government regulatory initiatives. METHODS: Official documents were searched to establish an account of the initiatives and measures targeting psychotropic FDCs. This was integrated with private market data (2008 to 2020). Descriptive statistics were used to examine changes in FDC numbers/formulations and sales volumes in standard units (SU) over tim

Attitudes of Medical Students Toward Sexual Minorities: A Multicentric Survey from the Medical Education Without Discrimination Project.

This study, as a part of the 'Medical Education without Discrimination (MED) Project," focuses on investigating attitudes toward sexual minorities and demographics among Turkish medical students. In the needs assessment phase of MED Project, a survey covering demographics, sexual orientation, attitudes toward sexual minorities, and Index of Attitudes Toward Homosexuals by Hudson & Ricketts (6-point Likert) was conducted among 523 medical students of one public and two nonprofit private medical schools in Istanbul. Of the students, 4.2% declared themselves as non-heterosexual. The findings high

MA-MIL: Sampling point-level abnormal ECG location method via weakly supervised learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Current automatic electrocardiogram (ECG) diagnostic systems could provide classification outcomes but often lack explanations for these results. This limitation hampers their application in clinical diagnoses. Previous supervised learning could not highlight abnormal segmentation output accurately enough for clinical application without manual labeling of large ECG datasets. METHOD: In this study, we present a multi-instance learning framework called MA-MIL, which has designed a multi-layer and multi-instance structure that is aggregated step by step at different sc

Identification of a de novo missense variant in the BRI3BP gene in a Holstein calf with congenital cardiac malformation and carpus valgus.

Congenital malformations in cattle pose a diagnostic challenge with limited treatment options and are often associated with a guarded prognosis. The aim of this study was to characterize the clinicopathological phenotype of a viable calf with complex congenital heart defects and carpus valgus, and to identify a possible genetic cause using a whole genome sequencing trio approach. A 3-month-old female Holstein calf was referred for respiratory distress and congenital carpal deviation. Clinicopathologic findings included ventricular septal defect, ventricular dilatation, atrioventricular valve d

Smells Like Anthelmintic Resistance-Gastrointestinal Prevalence, Burden and Diversity in Dogs from Portugal.

Anthelmintic resistance has been documented worldwide, but few cases have been reported in dogs. Shelter dogs are a great opportunity to study intestinal helminths and assess their potential resistance to anthelmintic compounds. With these two goals in mind, 361 faecal samples were collected from dogs in 18 municipalities in Portugal, from 19 shelters and 11 private tutors. These samples were analysed using the Mini-FLOTAC before and 13 days after deworming. The percentage of faecal egg count reduction was calculated. Parasitic forms were identified in 22.4% of the samples collected: Trichuris

Developing a Prospective Gestational Lyme Disease Study.

Lyme disease in pregnancy is understudied. The few available reports of Borrelia infection during pregnancy collecting clinical outcomes, with or without confirmed fetal infection both in utero and neonatal, are limited to case reports and small series. Population-based studies are not available. We propose a prospective study of Borrelia infection during pregnancy based in obstetrical practices in both endemic and nonendemic areas, with long term follow-up of pregnancy outcomes and development assessment of offspring infected or exposed to Borrelia in utero using current serological, microsco

A Brief Review of Demographic and Clinical Correlates of Cholesteatoma Surgery in the Qassim Region.

Background Cholesteatoma is described as the accumulation of squamous epithelium and keratinocytes within and around the middle ear cleft. There is a paucity of information regarding demographic and treatment outcomes for cholesteatoma in Saudi Arabia. An evaluation of the prevalence of comorbidities, complications and associations, of surgical treatment and demographics in the Qassim region was conducted. Methods This was a six-year retrospective review of patients treated for cholesteatoma at a private health facility, from August 2016 to July 2022. Data for age, gender, nationality, presenc

Attention-Guided Autoencoder for Automated Progression Prediction of Subjective Cognitive Decline With Structural MRI.

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is the preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) which happens even earlier than mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Progressive SCD will convert to MCI with the potential of further evolving to AD. Therefore, early identification of progressive SCD with neuroimaging techniques (e.g., structural MRI) is of great clinical value for early intervention of AD. However, existing MRI-based machine/deep learning methods usually suffer the small-sample-size problem and lack interpretability. To this end, we propose an interpretable autoencoder model with domain tran

Efficacy of a Silver-Based Shampoo for Treatment of Canine Malassezia: A Pilot Study.

Malassezia pachydermatis is a commensal of canines associated with Malassezia dermatitis. Consensus guidelines recommend topical and/or systemic treatment, but resistance to antifungals has been reported. The objective of this pilot study was to determine the efficacy of a 0.003% colloidal silver nanoparticle-based shampoo in the treatment of canine Malassezia dermatitis. Dogs were included based on compatible history, presentation, and at least one positive cytology. Fourteen privately owned dogs were bathed every 48 hr for up to 28 days, allowing 5-10 min of contact time. The mean Malassezia

Return to work following mild traumatic brain injury: Psychological and cognitive factors in a litigating sample in the post acute stage of recovery.

The purpose of this study was to investigate return to work (RTW) rates following a single uncomplicated mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) in the post-acute stage in the context of active litigation. More specifically, we sought to determine what psychological and/or cognitive factors predict a RTW after mTBI. Archival data were obtained from a random sample of litigating patients (n = 125; 54% female; mean age: 42.96 (SD = 12.74) who were referred to a private practice for a neuropsychological examination regarding their disability status following a single uncomplicated mTBI. Comparative genomic assessment of members of genus Tenacibaculum: an exploratory study.

Tenacibaculosis is an ulcerative skin disorder that affects finfish. It is caused by members of the genus Tenacibaculum, resulting in eccentric behavioural changes, including anorexia, lethargy, and abnormal swimming patterns that often result in mortality. Currently, species suspected of causing fish mortality include T. ovolyticum, T. gallaicum, T. discolor, T. finnmarkense, T. mesophilum, T. soleae, T. dicentrarchi, and T. maritimum. However, pathogenic members and the mechanisms involved in disease causation, progression, and transmission are limited due to the inadequate sequencing effort

Emerging Subspecialties: Pediatric Movement Disorders Neurology.

Pediatric movement disorders (PMD) neurologists care for infants, children, and adolescents with conditions that disrupt typical movement; serving as important subspecialist child neurologists in both academic and private practice settings. In contrast to adult movement disorders neurologists whose "bread and butter" is hypokinetic Parkinson disease, PMD subspecialty practice is often dominated by hyperkinetic movement disorders including tics, dystonia, chorea, tremor, and myoclonus. PMD neurology practice intersects with a variety of subspecialties, including neonatology, developmental pedia

MFSD2A frameshift variant in Kerry Hill sheep with microcephaly.

Microcephaly is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by reduced skull circumference and brain volume that occurs sporadically in farm animals. We investigated an early-onset neurodegenerative disorder observed in seven lambs of purebred Kerry Hill sheep. Clinical signs included inability to stand or severe ataxia, convulsions, and early death. Diagnostic imaging and brain necropsy confirmed microcephaly. The pedigree of the lambs suggested monogenic autosomal recessive inheritance. We sequenced the genome of one affected lamb, and comparison with 115 control genomes revealed a sing

[Early detection of lung cancer - current status and implementation scenarios].

The prognosis of conventionally diagnosed lung cancer patients is still rather poor. Two large, randomized trials using screening by low dose CT could demonstrate that early detection in persons with smoking as risk factor can improve this prognosis. Early detection of lung cancer can be achieved by structured screening programs using low dose CT for persons at increased risk, but in addition also by consequent management of incidental pulmonary nodules, which are seen on imaging for other reasons. Integral part of these programs should be prevention measures, especially a consequent, repeated

Analysis of pediatric outpatient visits uncovers disparities in molluscum contagiosum treatment across medical specialties in the United States.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a common viral infection that affects the skin of children. In this study, treatment regimens and demographic information for MC patients across US medical specialties were compared. We discovered an average of 471,383 pediatric MC visits annually using the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey database from 2000 to 2016. Non-Hispanics (82.9%) and Caucasians (91.0%) made up the majority of the visitors. The majority of cases were handled by pediatricians (46.5%), family medicine doctors (10.6%), and dermatologists (36.7%). Compared to pediatricians, dermatologis

Analysis of human rabies deaths reported at two hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan: a call to save lives by reforming rabies prevention facilities.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is endemic in low- and middle-income countries. It is caused mainly by the bite of a rabid dog and is fatal if not treated effectively and in a timely manner with quality post-exposure prophylaxis. Despite a profusion of private and public healthcare centres in Sindh province, most are ill-equipped to treat dog bites. METHODS: We analysed 129 human deaths from rabies who presented at the emergency departments of two tertiary care hospitals in Karachi over 10 y. Demographic data, time, location of the bite and distance travelled to report symptoms of rabies were recorded. R
