Relation of the stress hyperglycaemia ratio to residual risk in anticoagulated patients with atrial fibrillation: A report from the prospective Murcia AF Project III cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Atrial fibrillation (AF) carries residual thromboembolic and cardiovascular risk despite oral anticoagulation (OAC). The stress hyperglycaemia ratio (SHR), derived from admission glucose and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), integrates information on both acute glycaemic fluctuations and chronic glycaemic burden. SHR has been associated with adverse outcomes in high-risk populations, but its utility in stratifying residual risk in anticoagulated AF patients remains uncertain. This study evaluated SHR as a marker of thromboembolic and cardiovascular risk in this setting. METHODS: Thi

Extending the interval for changing flushing solutions for central venous and arterial line systems in the intensive care unit: An evidence-based quality improvement project.

BACKGROUND: Central venous lines (CVLs) and arterial lines (ALs) are commonly used for patients in the intensive care units (ICUs) to facilitate the administration of medications and haemodynamic monitoring. In an ICU in Queensland, Australia (AU), saline (sodium chloride 0.9%) flush bags used for these lines were routinely changed every 24 h following organizational policy that all intravenous fluid bags are to be changed within a 24-h period. AIM: This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to evaluate current practice guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model of QI and implementation sc

Improving Skin-to-Skin Care Among Stable Infants in a Level III NICU: A Quality Improvement Project Using Kotter's Change Management Model.

Introduction Skin-to-skin care (SSC), also known as kangaroo care, is defined as placing an infant directly prone, typically with the infant's chest against the caregiver's chest. SSC has demonstrated significant benefits for newborns, including improved thermoregulation, cardiorespiratory stability, reduced stress responses, and enhanced neurodevelopmental outcomes. While its use is widely promoted for preterm or critically ill infants, term and clinically stable infants are often overlooked in SSC initiatives despite evidence suggesting they, too, obtain substantial benefit. This is especial

Epidemiological trends in the burden of chronic kidney disease due to lead exposure in China from 1990 to 2021 compared to global, and projections until 2050.

Lead is an environmental and occupational heavy metal and contaminant that can lead to chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study analyzed the long-term trend burden from 1990-2021 using Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, projecting trends through 2050 with Bayesian age-period-cohort models. In 2021, the number of deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of lead-associated CKD was 8635.60 and 189127.20. And age-standardized mortality and DALYs rates were 0.47 per 100,000 population and 9.39 per 100,000 population, respectively. Compared with 1900, all indicators have declined except f

A Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy-sponsored International Workshop Report on Endocrine and Bone Issues in Patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: An Ever-changing Landscape.

In April 2023, over 30 experts and advocates from four countries met in Rome, Italy to discuss unmet needs in endocrine and bone health care for individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Despite recent advances in muscle-targeted therapy, long-term glucocorticoids (GC) remain the backbone of treatment for the foreseeable future. This affirms the need to intensify efforts that will mitigate serious complications of GC therapy, including unexpected mortality due to fat embolism syndrome following bone injury and also unrecognized adrenal suppression, early loss of ambulation linked to

Reduction of tungiasis prevalence, intensity, and morbidity during a two-year long community-based tungiasis control project in a hyperendemic region in Karamoja, Uganda.

Tungiasis is a widespread and debilitating zoonotic Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD). Manual extraction of the sand fleas with non-sterile sharp instruments is the most common but unsafe treatment method in affected communities. Topical application of a dimeticone oil formula (NYDA) has previously been shown to be a safe and effective method of killing embedded sand fleas. The objective of this study was to evaluate a two-year long humanitarian One Health tungiasis control project in 17 villages in Napak district, Karamoja region, Northeastern Uganda. The community-based intervention included

Studying the effects of digital arts-based interventions on teenagers' social media usage, brain connectivity, and mental health: study protocol of the SMART project.

Background: Social media (SM) has become ubiquitous among youth. However, which SM activities are beneficial or detrimental for the wellness of children and adolescents is still under debate. While some reports highlight positive outcomes of SM in learning, social interaction, and wellbeing, other investigations suggest that the overuse of SM induces decreased attention, cognitive, and emotional control, and increases mental-health related disorders (e.g. depression and anxiety). Interestingly, the cognitive and emotional functions negatively affected by the intense use of SM, as well as some

The association between slow-wave sleep and choroid plexus calcifications in older adults. Results from the sleep disorders substudy of the Atahualpa Project cohort.

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that choroid plexus calcifications (CPC) may be associated with glymphatic system dysfunction and with disturbed slow-wave (N3) sleep. If this is the case, volumetric analysis of CPC could be used to estimate the functional ability of the glymphatic system. However, data on this association is limited. This study aims to assess the association between percentages of N3 sleep - used as a putative marker of glymphatic system activity - and the volume of CPC in older adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Community-dwelling individuals aged ≥60 years enrolled in the Atahu

Development of a research agenda for medical grade footwear in the Netherlands: A multidisciplinary multiphase project to determine the key research questions to advance scientific knowledge in the field.

BACKGROUND: The field of medical grade footwear is dynamic. Originally, a field where individual knowledge, expertise and skills determined the footwear and its outcomes, now becoming a more evidence-based and data-driven field with protocols and systems in place to create appropriate footwear. However, scientific evidence concerning medical grade footwear is still limited. Evidently, all stakeholders, from patients to pedorthists to rehabilitation physicians, will profit from a larger evidence-base in this field. A widely supported research agenda is an essential first step to advance and fac
