We report the first experience obtained with the new Intrasept device. We attempted to treat 35 patients with a mean age of 43 +/- 21 years. The mean size of the defect was 17/15 mm. It was successfully closed in 31 patients. In the remaining four the device could not be stabilized because of excessive defect size. A small residual shunt was present immediately following implantation in three patients. No complications occurred during the procedure and at 6 months, 31 patients had an uneventful outcome. Only one patient had a small residual shunt. No thrombus, embolization, or device fracture

BACKGROUND: The HELEX septal occluder is a new transcatheter atrial septal defect occlusion device. This study analyzes the data collected from the first US clinical trials with this device to determine the most significant factors in successful use of the device.

A 67-year-old woman who presented with stress urinary incontinence underwent a tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) operation. Postoperatively, she complained of urgency, gross hematuria and dysuria, which persisted for one week. Cystoscopy with a flexible cytoscope revealed penetration of the bladder wall by the tape, which had been missed during the TVT procedure by rigid cystoscopy. After the penetrating portion of the tape was excised, her symptoms were resolved and continence was preserved. This is the first report of a small-colony variant Cryptococcus neoformans isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of a patient with cystopleural shunt associated chronic meningitis. Cryptococcal antigen testing of the cerebrospinal fluid and the serum were both negative. The atypical morphology and the false-negative test may lead to delay of diagnosis and treatment.

This case report describes a simple method for augmenting tissue at prospective palatal connective tissue donor sites. The patient was referred for treatment of facial marginal tissue recession on the maxillary left canine. Clinical examination indicated that the palatal mucosa was thin and did not provide an adequate volume of soft tissue for donor harvesting, precluding the use of a palatal connective tissue graft for treatment of the recession defect. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of scleral buckling surgery on the developing eye in an animal model.
METHODS: Eleven young rabbits underwent scleral buckling surgery in one eye. In 6 rabbits, a 2.5 x 0.6-mm solid silicone encircling band (240 style) with a Watzke sleeve was used, and in 5 rabbits, a 2.0-mm silicone encircling sponge (502 style) with its ends abutting, but not connected, was used. After 3 months, both eyes of each animal were enucleated. Six eyes of an additional 3 rabbits served as baseline controls for determining initial globe volumes.
