Associative visual agnosia: a case study.

We report a case of massive associative visual agnosia. In the light of current theories of identification and semantic knowledge organization, a deficit involving both levels of structural description system and visual semantics must be assumed to explain the case. We suggest, in line with a previous case study, an alternative account in the framework of (non abstractive) episodic models of memory.

Cross-modal recognition disorders for persons and other unique entities in a patient with right fronto-temporal degeneration.

We describe a patient (CD), with a right fronto-temporal degeneration, who showed massive defects in the recognition of familiar people and severe behavioural disorders. CD scored in the normal range on tests of episodic memory, attention and visual-spatial abilities, and obtained mildly abnormal scores on naming and executive functions tests. CD was then studied and matched with a left brain-damaged patient (IG), comparable to her as for education, naming score and general cognitive impairment, on several tasks, exploring recognition of familiar people and of other instances of 'unique entiti

Heterogeneity of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in Croatian war veterans: retrospective study.

AIM: To determine the relationship between the intensity of combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the intensity of predominating symptoms. METHOD: The study included 151 veterans from 1992-1995 war in Croatia (aged 38.3+/-7.3 years) with PTSD. The veterans were psychologically tested with the Mississippi Scale for Combat-related PTSD (M-PTSD), Questionnaire on Traumatic Combat and War Experiences (USTBI-M), and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-version 201 (MMPI-201). RESULTS: The discriminative analysis of the data revealed that the group with lower PTSD intensit

Dysfunctional facial emotional expression and comprehension in a patient with corticobasal degeneration.

Patients with corticobasal degeneration (CBD) frequently develop orofacial apraxia but little is known about CBD's influence on emotional facial processing. We describe a patient who developed a facial apraxia including an impaired ability to voluntarily generate facial expressions with relative sparing of spontaneous emotional faces. Her ability to interpret the facial expressions of others was also severely impaired. Despite these deficits, the patient had normal affect and normal speech, including expressive and receptive emotional prosody. As patients with corticobasal degeneration are kno

Fibromyalgia in Behçet's disease is associated with anxiety and depression, and not with disease activity.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of fibromyalgia (FM) in Korean patients with Behçet's disease (BD) and to evaluate the association between FM and clinical and psychological variables. METHODS: Seventy patients with BD were examined for FM tender points and asked to complete a Korean version of the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ). Disease activity was measured using the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and a clinical activity score, which was calculated by summing the clinical manifestations. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Beck Depres

Increased cholesterol levels after paroxetine treatment in patients with panic disorder.

Panic disorder (PD) is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. We examined serum cholesterol and plasma catecholamine levels in PD before and after paroxetine treatment. The serum cholesterol and plasma catecholamine levels were not different between the PD patients and control subjects before the treatment. However, the levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly increased in the 28 PD patients after 3 months of paroxetine treatment, whereas the body mass index and plasma catecholamine levels were unch

Wayfinding in familiar and unfamiliar environments in a case of progressive topographical agnosia.

A 71-year-old right-handed man (F.G.) presents with prosopagnosia and with an inability to recognize famous and familiar buildings. Despite his deficit, F.G. obtained normal scores on neuropsychological tests of executive functions, language, praxis and primary visuoperceptual skills. Brain MRI showed atrophy predominantly in the right temporal lobe, particularly in the fusiform gyrus and the parahippocampal cortex. The present study investigated F.G.'s ability to orient himself in familiar and new environments. His wayfinding abilities in a familiar environment (i.e., his hometown) were prese

Driving and riding avoidance following motor vehicle crashes in a non-clinical sample: psychometric properties of a new measure.

Three studies were conducted to assess the reliability and validity of a measure that we developed using a non-clinical sample of university undergraduates, the Driving and Riding Avoidance Scale (DRAS). Study 1 indicated that the scale was internally consistent (alpha=0.92) and that a four-factor model (general avoidance, avoidance of traffic and busy roads, avoidance of weather or darkness, and riding avoidance) provided the best fit to the data in a sample of 386 crash survivors. This study also revealed that survivors who received medical treatment for their crash-related injuries reported

Inter-rater reliability of scales and tests used to measure mild cognitive impairment by general practitioners and psychologists.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to assess whether general practitioners (GPs) can be trained to use a simple battery of functional scales and neuropsychological tests to detect people likely to develop dementia as reliably as neuropsychologists in clinical practice. METHODS: Fifty GPs with medium-sized practices in the Bordeaux area of France were recruited by monitors and trained to use a battery of tests (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Isaacs Set Test (IST), Benton Visual Retention Test (BVRT) and Zazzo's Cancellation Test (ZCT)). Each GP was required to recruit one patient. The

The Koala Fear Questionnaire: a standardized self-report scale for assessing fears and fearfulness in pre-school and primary school children.

The Koala Fear Questionnaire (KFQ) is a standardized self-report scale for assessing fears and fearfulness in children aged between 4 and 12 years. The current article presents six studies which examined the reliability and validity of the KFQ. Study 1 (N=108) demonstrated that the visual fear scales of Koala bears as employed in the KFQ are highly comparable to the standard 3-point scales that are used in other childhood fear measures. Study 2 (N=163) provided support for the convergent validity of the KFQ in a sample of 8- to 14-year-old children. That is, the scale correlated substantially

Factorial validation of the Severe Impairment Battery for patients with Alzheimer's disease. A pilot study.

The Severe Impairment Battery (SIB) estimates the cognitive aptitudes and other skills of severely impaired dementia patients. The main objective of this pilot study was to clearly identify the number of factors present in the SIB and to analyze the relationships between the different cognitive domains explored by the SIB and loss of autonomy. We administered the SIB, the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and two scales of dependency to 48 patients with Alzheimer's disease in its late stages. A factorial analysis (Principal Components Analysis) showed a 4-factor solution for the SIB: a cogn

Increased incidence of anxiety and depression during bone marrow transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Since the first organ transplantation in the 1950s, there have been reports that patients who underwent organ transplantation had a poor prognosis if they were depressed and/or anxious prior to transplantation. Our objective in this study was to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression in the different stages of bone marrow transplantation (BMT). METHODS: Mood disorders (MD), anxiety disorders (AD), and adjustment disorders (ADD) were measured five times with DSM IV. The Beck Inventory of Depression (BID) and Hamilton Rating Scale of Anxiety (HRSA) were used to measure l

A neuropsychological-neuropathological case study of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

We report the first neuropsychological-neuropathological case study of a patient with variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) who was seen at the early stages of the disease, and whose cognitive functioning was monitored in the following months until his death. At presentation, his neuropsychological profile included impaired ability to retain new episodic information, deficits on tests of retrieval from semantic memory, and impairments on tests of memory for public knowledge, such as famous personalities. Tests of executive function were also performed poorly. Picture recognition memory and

[Management of memory disorders in anxious patients consulting a memory clinic].

The proportion of patients consulting pluridisciplinary memory clinics who present anxiety disorders varies with recruitment and referral practices but often exceeded 10p.100. Most of these subjects have an anxiety trait or stress-related generalized anxiety, often triggered by diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in a close friend or relation. The consultant should play special attention to analyzing the complaint in order to disclose difficulties in attention, true "loss of memory" events, and any recent traumatic events. The psychometric examination is generally normal or evidences discrete fro

A systematic overview of the use of diary cards, quality-of-life questionnaires, and psychometric tests in treatment trials of Helicobacter pylori-positive and -negative non-ulcer dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to evaluate the use of diary cards, quality-of-life questionnaires, and psychometric tests in treatment trials of non-ulcer dyspepsia. METHODS: Data sources were a Medline search (up to 1966) and a manual search of five gastrointestinal journals (up to 1980) for original, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials with at least 20 patients which evaluated treatment regimens for non-ulcer dyspepsia. RESULTS: Of the 67 eligible studies, 31 used diary cards. Diary cards were used alone in 15 of the 31 studies (48%), whereas the others (52%) also used a physician

Cardiorespiratory symptoms in response to physiological arousal.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a laboratory paradigm for assessing the tendency to amplify somatic symptoms and report bodily distress. METHOD: Reports of four different cardiopulmonary symptoms were obtained during standardized, treadmill exercise, while the physiological parameters which induce these symptoms were simultaneously measured. Two indices were developed to compare symptom reporting across patients: symptom severity after reaching 80% of predicted, maximal exercise capacity; and the magnitude of physiological arousal necessary to induce an initial sensation of discomfort. RESULTS: Fifty-

Learning disabilities, low achievement, and mild mental retardation: more alike than different?

Children identified with learning disabilities (LD), low achievement (LA), or mild mental retardation (MMR) were contrasted on 41 measures of ability, academic achievement, social skills, problem behavior, academic engaged time, perceptual-motor skills, and school history. Both multivariate, univariate, and meta-analytic comparisons among the three groups showed relatively large differences on measures of aptitude and achievement, with the LD group scoring higher on measures of cognitive ability than the LA and MMR groups and the LA group showing higher tested academic achievement than the LD
