Do appreciable changes in the upper extremity motor capability to perform clean intermittent catheterization come about with time after traumatic spinal cord injury?

INTRODUCTION: Bladder dysfunction after spinal cord injury (SCI) often requires clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) or other management strategies. A common dilemma in those desiring to perform CIC independently but lacking the appropriate upper extremity (UE) motor function is the timing of reconstructive surgery. METHODS: We assessed the National Spinal Cord Injury Data Set for the years 2000-2016. Our cohort consisted of persons with cervical SCI, who underwent complete motor examination upon discharge from rehabilitation and at 1-year follow-up. Using a previously published algorithm

Differences in the neural correlates of frontal lobe tests.

BACKGROUND: The Executive Interview (EXIT25), the executive clock-drawing task (CLOX1), and the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) are used to assess executive function at the bedside. These tests assess distinct psychometric properties. The aim of this study was to examine differences in the neural correlates of the EXIT25, CLOX1, and FAB based on magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: Fifty-eight subjects (30 with Alzheimer's disease, 10 with mild cognitive impairment, and 18 healthy controls) participated in this study. Multiple regression analyses were performed to examine the brain regions c

Action affordances and visuo-spatial complexity in motor imagery: An fMRI study.

Imagining a complex action requires not only motor-related processing but also visuo-spatial imagery. In the current study, we examined visuo-spatial complexity and action affordances in motor imagery (MI). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the neural activity in MI of reach-to-grasp movements of the right hand in five conditions. Thirty participants were scanned while imagining grasping an everyday object, grasping a geometrical shape, grasping next to an everyday object, grasping next to a geometrical shape, and grasping at nothing (no object involved). We found th

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation prevents methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced neurotoxicity by modulating autophagy in an in vivo mouse model of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of protein inclusions and the loss of dopaminergic neurons. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain-stimulating technique that has demonstrated promising results in clinical studies of PD. Despite accumulating evidence indicating that tDCS exerts a protective effect, the mechanism underlying its activity remains unknown. In the present study, we first investigated the neuroprotective effect of tDCS in a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced PD mouse mo

Continuous performance test impairment in a 22q11.2 microdeletion mouse model: improvement by amphetamine.

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) confers high risk of neurodevelopmental disorders such as schizophrenia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. These disorders are associated with attentional impairment, the remediation of which is important for successful therapeutic intervention. We assessed a 22q11.2DS mouse model (Df(h22q11)/+) on a touchscreen rodent continuous performance test (rCPT) of attention and executive function that is analogous to human CPT procedures. Relative to wild-type littermates, Df(h22q11)/+ male mice showed impaired attentional performance as shown by de

Lateral cerebellar nucleus stimulation promotes motor recovery and suppresses neuroinflammation in a fluid percussion injury rodent model.

BACKGROUND: Many traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors live with persistent disability from chronic motor deficits despite contemporary rehabilitation services, underscoring the need for novel treatment. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: We have previously shown that deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the lateral cerebellar nucleus (LCN) can enhance post-stroke motor recovery and increase the expression of markers of long-term potentiation in perilesional cerebral cortex. We hypothesize that a similar beneficial effect will be for motor deficits induced by unilateral fluid percussion injury (FPI) in rodent

Assessing the effects of concussion using the C3Logix Test Battery: An exploratory study.

The C3Logix is a computerized concussion assessment tool that measures a wider array of symptoms (i.e., balance and oculomotor functioning) than other computerized batteries. Although the C3Logix has been used increasingly by athletic organizations at all levels of play, its utility within the concussion population has not been extensively examined. The current study aimed to determine whether the C3Logix is sensitive to the effects of concussion. A total of 54 student-athletes enrolled at a large southern university completed the C3Logix at baseline and within days following a suspected concu

Characteristics of single-vehicle crashes with e-bikes in Switzerland.

In Switzerland, the usage and accident numbers of e-bikes have strongly increased in recent years. According to official statistics, single-vehicle accidents constitute an important crash type. Up to date, very little is known about the mechanisms and causes of these crashes. To gain more insight, a survey was conducted among 3658 e-cyclists in 2016. The crash risk and injury severity were analysed using logistic regression models. 638 (17%) e-cyclists had experienced a single-vehicle accident in road traffic since the beginning of their e-bike use. Risk factors were high riding exposure, male

Common variation within the SETBP1 gene is associated with reading-related skills and patterns of functional neural activation.

Epidemiological population studies highlight the presence of substantial individual variability in reading skill, with approximately 5-10% of individuals characterized as having specific reading disability (SRD). Despite reported substantial heritability, typical for a complex trait, the specifics of the connections between reading and the genome are not understood. Recently, the SETBP1 gene has been implicated in several complex neurodevelopmental syndromes and disorders that impact language. Here, we examined the relationship between common polymorphisms in this gene, reading, and reading as

Child neurodevelopment and mental health after surgical ventricular septal defect repair: risk and protective factors.

AIM: This case-control study examined the long-term consequences of surgical correction for ventricular septal defect (VSD; the most common congenital heart defect) in infancy. It assessed children who had undergone VSD surgery and the factors related to maternal conditions, surgery, and hospital stay. METHOD: Thirty-nine children (23 females, 16 males; age range 6y 1mo-9y 7mo [mean 7y 4mo, SD 1y]) with repaired isolated, non-syndromic, non-genetic VSD were compared with 39 typically developing children (22 females, 17 males; age range 6y-9y 2mo [mean 7y 3mo, SD 10mo]). The children completed

The Effect of Prosthesis Use on Hand Mental Rotation After Unilateral Upper-Limb Amputation.

Amputation of a limb induces changes in the so-called body schema, which might be influenced by the use of prosthetic devices. Changes in the body representation associated with prosthesis use could be investigated using a hand mental rotation task. However, direct neurophysiologic evidence for the effect of prosthesis use on hand mental rotation is still lacking. In this paper, we recruited two groups of unilateral upper-limb amputees, i.e., amputees using a prosthesis or with a history of prosthesis use (Pro group) and amputees without a prosthesis (non-Pro group), as well as a sample of mat

ADHD, Smoking Withdrawal, and Inhibitory Control: Results of a Neuroimaging Study with Methylphenidate Challenge.

Smoking withdrawal negatively impacts inhibitory control, and these effects are greater for smokers with preexisting attention problems, such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The current study preliminarily evaluated changes in inhibitory control-related behavior and brain activation during smoking withdrawal among smokers with ADHD. Moreover, we investigated the role of catecholamine transmission in these changes by examining the effects of 40 mg methylphenidate (MPH) administration. Adult daily smokers with (n=17) and without (n=20) ADHD completed fMRI scanning under each

Preterm birth leads to hyper-reactive cognitive control processing and poor white matter organization in adulthood.

Individuals born preterm with very low birth weight (VLBW; birth weight ≤ 1500 g) are at high risk for perinatal brain injuries and deviant brain development, leading to increased chances of later cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems. Here we investigated the neuronal underpinnings of both reactive and proactive cognitive control processes in adults with VLBW. We included 32 adults born preterm with VLBW (before 37th week of gestation) and 32 term-born controls (birth weight ≥10th percentile for gestational age) between 22 and 24 years of age that have been followed prospectively sinc

Clinical Evaluation of the Concussed Athlete: A View From the Sideline.

CONTEXT: The sideline assessment of concussion is challenging, given its variable presentations, the limited sensitivity and specificity of sideline assessment tools, and how the presentation of the injury evolves over time. In addition, the diagnostic process, as well as the tools used to assess and manage concussion, continue to progress as research and what we know about concussion advance. This paper focuses on the initial assessment on the sideline by reviewing the concussion-evaluation literature, drawing from clinical experience to emphasize a standardized approach, and underscoring the

Comparison between sEMG and force as control interfaces to support planar arm movements in adults with Duchenne: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Adults with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) can benefit from devices that actively support their arm function. A critical component of such devices is the control interface as it is responsible for the human-machine interaction. Our previous work indicated that surface electromyography (sEMG) and force-based control with active gravity and joint-stiffness compensation were feasible solutions for the support of elbow movements (one degree of freedom). In this paper, we extend the evaluation of sEMG- and force-based control interfaces to simultaneous and proportional control of pla

Levodopa response differs in Parkinson's motor subtypes: A task-based effective connectivity study.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a circuit-level disorder with clinically-determined motor subtypes. Despite evidence suggesting each subtype may have different pathophysiology, few neuroimaging studies have examined levodopa-induced differences in neural activation between tremor dominant (TD) and postural instability/gait difficulty (PIGD) subtype patients during a motor task. The goal of this functional MRI (fMRI) study was to examine task-induced activation and connectivity in the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical motor circuit in healthy controls, TD patients, and PIGD patients before and afte

Nasal Respiration Entrains Human Limbic Oscillations and Modulates Cognitive Function.

UNLABELLED: The need to breathe links the mammalian olfactory system inextricably to the respiratory rhythms that draw air through the nose. In rodents and other small animals, slow oscillations of local field potential activity are driven at the rate of breathing (∼2-12 Hz) in olfactory bulb and cortex, and faster oscillatory bursts are coupled to specific phases of the respiratory cycle. These dynamic rhythms are thought to regulate cortical excitability and coordinate network interactions, helping to shape olfactory coding, memory, and behavior. However, while respiratory oscillations are a
