Gambling and gambling-related harm: recent World Health Organization initiatives.

OBJECTIVES: There has been unprecedented growth in commercial gambling. Increasingly gambling has migrated to the Internet and become readily accessible via mobile devices. Gambling disorder and gambling-related harm present a significant global public health challenge. To date, few jurisdictions have included gambling in health policies and addressed gambling-related harm within a comprehensive public health framework. The purpose of this study is to examine recent developments at the global level that may change this. STUDY DESIGN: This is a narrative review and examination of meeting conte

Yemen's Cholera Epidemic Is a One Health Issue.

Yemen has been faced with the worst cholera epidemic of modern times, with more than 1 million suspected cases and 3000 deaths at the time of writing. This problem is largely due to the longstanding civil war between pro-government forces and the Houthi armed movement, which has severely damaged already vulnerable sanitation and healthcare facilities and systems in the country. It is further compounded by a dire lack of basic amenities, chronic malnutrition, and unfavourable weather conditions. Another contributory component may be aerial transfer by cholera-infected chironomid insects. To con

2006 Harben Lecture. World poverty and population health: the need for sustainable change.

Despite important recent initiatives to improve the health of the most disadvantaged in the world (the Millennium Development Goals, debt cancellation campaigns), poverty and preventable diseases still plague many parts of the globe. Sub-Saharan Africa remains one of the most severely affected. It is the only region in the world where life expectancy has not seen much improvement. Some countries have employed strategies of investment in public services, such as education, with positive results (e.g. the 'tiger economies'). Others have tried to follow prescribed strategies from global instituti

The Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center: development, implementation, and evaluation.

There is increasing research evidence that stressors in the social and physical environment (e.g., poverty, inadequate housing, air pollution, and racism) are associated with poor health outcomes. Given the complex set of determinants of health status, the disproportionate burden of disease experienced within marginalized communities, and the limited effectiveness of traditional prevention research, particularly within communities of color, there have been growing calls for more comprehensive and participatory approaches to public health research and practice. The purpose of this article is to

Turning the tables on industry narratives: a health communication playbook for promoting health.

Industries producing harmful products such as tobacco, alcohol, ultra-processed foods, and fossil fuels use highly developed communication strategies to shape public opinion, influence policy, and protect their markets. These 'playbooks' rely on recurring tactics, including framing harms as matters of personal choice, promoting innovation narratives, manufacturing doubt, delaying regulation, and obscuring human consequences. While public health has increasingly recognized these strategies, responses have often been fragmented and reactive. This paper argues that health promotion requires a pra

How Corruption Influences Population Health.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points This study examines the link between corruption and mortality. We find that corruption is associated with higher mortality, particularly in low-income countries. It is also linked to lower government revenue and distorted government expenditure patterns, which may contribute to resource misallocation and constraints in health financing. Our findings contribute to the literature on upstream determinants of health by highlighting the relevance of institutional and political economy factors for population health. The Sustainable Development Goals on combating corruption

How floods impact health systems: a scoping review of Australian research.

OBJECTIVES: Although the health impacts of floods are well described, there is limited research on how flooding affects health systems, services and the health workforce-despite their central role in mitigating and responding to these impacts. This scoping review examines the nature and extent of existing research evidence on the impact of flooding events on Australia's health system. DESIGN: A scoping review following the Johanna Briggs Institute methodology. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest Central and PsycINFO were searched through to 22 October 2024

Bottom-Up Communication Approach for Effective Implementation of the One Health Initiative in Ethiopia.

The One Health approach, which integrates human, animal, environmental, and plant health, is Crucial for addressing complex public health challenges in Ethiopia. It addresses zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and ecological degradation. These issues have increased the national burden alongside efforts for infectious disease prevention and control. However, effective implementation relies on communication strategies that are participatory, context-specific, and responsive to local realities. This paper presents a bottom-up communication framework designed to enhance local ownership,

Development of the Global Mycetoma Working Group.

The Global Mycetoma Working Group (GMWG) was formed in January 2018 in response to the declaration of mycetoma as a neglected tropical disease (NTD) by the World Health Assembly. The aim of the working group is to connect experts and public health practitioners around the world to accelerate mycetoma prevention activities and reduce the impact of mycetoma on patients, healthcare providers and society in the endemic regions. The working group has made tangible contributions to mycetoma programming, awareness and coordination among scientists, clinicians and public health professionals. The grou

Using internet search data to explore the global public concerns in ankylosing spondylitis.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the changes of global public interest in internet search of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) based on Google Trends (GT) data, in order to reflect the characteristics of AS itself. METHODS: GT was used to obtain the search popularity scores of the term 'AS' on a global scale, between January 2004 and December 2018, under the 'health' classification. Based on the global search data of AS provided by GT, the cosinor analysis was used to test whether there was seasonality in AS. RESULTS: In general, AS related search volume demonstrated a decreasing trend from January

One Health collaborations for zoonotic disease control in Ethiopia.

Zoonotic diseases require a One Health approach for successful control and elimination due to the nature of their transmission between animals and humans. One Health recognises that the health of humans, animals, and the environment are all interconnected. Ethiopia has committed itself to controlling five prioritised zoonotic diseases (rabies, anthrax, brucellosis, leptospirosis and echinococcosis), using a One Health approach. The National One Health Steering Committee (NOHSC) provides a framework for national stakeholders to address gaps in multisectoral communication, coordination and colla

[Migrants: new travelers in a mobile world?].

As a result of globalisation, international mobility increases and diversifies. Migrants represent an increasing proportion of the European population. As many come from regions where infectious and tropical diseases are prevalent, they can be carriers of these diseases, reflecting the epidemiological situation of they country of origin. Physicians need to be able to recognize and treat them. Some migrants return home to visit friends and relatives. They are a group of travellers at higher risk, often less informed on prevention measures (malaria chemo-prophylaxis, immunization). They represen

Deprescribing, defined as the supervised reduction or discontinuation of inappropriate medications with the aim of improving quality of care, has become a major public health issue. Long guided primarily by clinical and economic considerations, deprescribing now increasingly incorporates an environmental dimension, particularly with regard to the ecological footprint of the pharmaceutical life cycle. This article presents a synthesis of key insights from an interdisciplinary workshop held at Sciences Po in December 2024, which brought together researchers, clinicians, institutional representat

Strengthening nationally led approaches to new product introduction for HIV prevention.

As the pipeline of new HIV prevention technologies (including long-acting injectables, vaginal rings, antibody infusions, and, potentially, vaccines) expands careful planning is needed to ensure these innovations are effectively and equitably introduced within public health systems. Such planning is particularly important because the introduction and scale-up of HIV prevention tools has historically been hampered by insufficient national ownership, implementation in pilot settings that do not reflect the realities of broader public health systems, insufficient community engagement, and fragmen
