In recent years, the study of the interaction between gut microbiota and distant organs such as the heart, lungs, brain, and liver has become a hot topic in the field of gut microbiology. With a deeper understanding of its immune regulation and mechanisms of action, these findings have increasingly highlighted their guiding value in clinical practice. The gut is not only the largest digestive organ in the human body but also the habitat for most microorganisms. Imbalances in gut microbial communities have been associated with various lung diseases, such as allergic asthma and cystic fibrosis.

Uncontrolled inflammation leads to nonspecific destruction and remodeling of tissues and can contribute to many human pathologies, including pulmonary diseases. Stimulation of inflammatory resolution is considered an important process that protects against the progression of chronic inflammatory diseases. Resolvins generated from essential omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids have been demonstrated to be signaling molecules in inflammation with important pro-resolving and anti-inflammatory capabilities. By binding to specific receptors, resolvins can modulate inflammatory processes such as neut

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to interstitial lung disease (ILD; PH-ILD) can complicate a multitude of ILDs, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and nonspecific interstitial pneumonia. Development of PH-ILD is associated with increased need for supplemental oxygen, reduced mobility, and decreased survival. A high index of suspicion is required to make the diagnosis, given the substantial overlap in symptoms with those of ILD without PH. Severely reduced diffusing capacity or 6-min walk test distance, prominent exertional desaturation, and impaired h

More than 1 billion people globally are suffering from hypertension, which is a long-term incurable medical condition that can further lead to dangerous complications and death if left untreated. In earlier studies, the brain-gut peptide secretin (SCT) was found to be able to control blood pressure by its cardiovascular and pulmonary effects. For example, serum SCT in patients with congestive heart failure was one-third of the normal level. These observations strongly suggest that SCT has a causal role in blood pressure control, and in this report, we used constitutive SCT knockout (SCT-/-) mi

Acute rejection after lung transplantation occurs commonly and is usually characterized histologically by a perivascular mononuclear infiltrate. We report five cases of pulmonary capillaritis with a histologic appearance distinct from typical rejection, occurring in patients ranging in age from 18 to 45 years, with a variety of underlying diseases including alpha1 antitrypsin deficiency, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Four of the five patients had alveolar hemorrhage histologically, and two had frank hemoptysis. Time of onset ranged from 3 weeks to many mont

The efficacy and safety of short-term supplemental peripheral hyperalimentation (PH) was evaluated in 15 hospitalized cystic fibrosis (CF) patients who exhibited varying degrees of pulmonary disease severity and nutritional impairment. An average of 1000 supplemental calories/day were administered intravenously for a 2- to 3-week period to patients being treated with parenteral antibiotics for exacerbation of their pulmonary disease. Eleven of 15 patients responded with a weight gain of greater than 2.0 kg and showed continued weight gain and stabilized pulmonary status for the 6- to 12-month

Clinical conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), can lead to chronic right ventricle pressure overload and progressive right heart failure (RHF). RHF can be identified by right-sided cardiac hypertrophy and dilation associated with abnormal myocardial function affecting the RV and the right atrium (RA). We recently demonstrated that severe RHF is accompanied by an increased risk of atrial inflammation, atrial fibrosis, and atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia (CA). Recent studies have shown that RV an

OBJECTIVE: An inconsistent association has been reported between the serum anticitrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) level and rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-related pulmonary disease risk. We conducted a metaanalysis to reveal the association between them.
METHODS: An electronic search was performed in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink databases for studies published up to August 2013. The distributions of the serum ACPA level in cases and controls were obtained from eligible studies. The risk of RA-related pulmonary disease associated with serum ACPA positivity was estimated by OR and 95

A 48-year-old female with D-TGA, ventricular septal defect (VSD), pulmonary stenosis, pulmonary hypertension (PAH), and total anomalous pulmonary venous connection underwent hybrid intervention for a pulmonary artery (PA) aneurysm and replacement of a dysfunctional pulmonary valve (PV). She underwent a hemi-Mustard procedure at 9 years of age but remained cyanotic. She developed atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and functional decline at 43 years of age. A chest CT demonstrated a 6 cm PA aneurysm that upon re-imaging at 48 years had increased to 11 cm. A catheterization procedure revealed se

The pathology of drug-induced pulmonary toxicity in children is poorly understood and probably under-estimated, in the absence of any prospective studies evaluating in a systematic fashion the side effect of medication on the respiratory apparatus. The pulmonary toxicity of thoracic irradiation has markedly receded with more restricted indications for this sort of treatment. Three clinical patterns are most commonly encountered in drug induced lung disease in children: interstitial lung disease, hypersensitivity lung disease and non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema. The diagnosis is a diagnosis of

The poor prognosis of patients with unresectable pulmonary metastases of soft tissue sarcoma is well known. In order to evaluate the beneficial effect of radiotherapy, we have treated 44 patients with pulmonary metastases of grade 3 soft tissue sarcoma from 1980 to 1986. In 36 patients the treatment volume was restricted to the single metastases up to a dose of 50 to 60 (9 to 10 Gy/week). The survival rate at one year was 18% and at two years 6%. Eight patients were treated with a combined regimen, consisting of cisplatin and ifosfamide with simultaneous whole lung irradiation. Irradiation was

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) with interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) lacks curative pharmacological treatments, thus necessitating effective animal models for candidate drug discovery. Existing bleomycin (BLM)-induced SSc-ILD mouse models feature spatially limited pulmonary fibrosis, spontaneously resolving after 28 days. Here, we present an alternative BLM administration approach in female C57BL/6 mice, combining oropharyngeal aspiration (OA) and subcutaneous mini-pump delivery (pump) of BLM to induce a sustained and more persistent fibrosis, while retaining stable skin fibrosis. A dose-finding

A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) are key orchestrators of cAMP signaling that act by recruiting protein kinase A (PKA) in proximity of its substrates and regulators to specific subcellular compartments. Modulation of AKAPs function offers the opportunity to achieve compartment-restricted modulation of the cAMP/PKA axis, paving the way to new targeted treatments. For instance, blocking the AKAP activity of phosphoinositide 3-kinase γ (PI3Kγ) improves lung function by inducing cAMP-mediated bronchorelaxation, ion transport, and antiinflammatory responses. Here, we report the generation of a n

Introduction. Pulmonary infections caused by organisms of the Mycobacterium abscessus complex are increasingly prevalent in populations at risk, such as patients with cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis and emphysema.Hypothesis. M. abscessus infection of the lung is not observed in immunocompetent individuals, which raises the possibility that the compromised lung environment is a suitable niche for the pathogen to thrive in due to the overproduction of mucus and high amounts of host cell lysis.Aim. Evaluate the ability of M. abscessus to form biofilm and grow utilizing in vitro conditions as seen

Nanomaterials are frontier technological products used in different manufactured goods. Because of their unique physicochemical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) are finding numerous applications in electronics, aerospace devices, computers, and chemical, polymer, and pharmaceutical industries. SWCNT are relatively recently discovered members of the carbon allotropes that are similar in structure to fullerenes and graphite. Previously, we (47) have reported that pharyngeal aspiration of purified SWCNT by C57BL/6 mice caused dose-dependent g

Integrin-linked kinase (ILK) is a multidomain focal adhesion protein implicated in signal transduction between integrins and growth factor receptors. Although its expression is upregulated in pulmonary and renal fibrosis, its role in the development of hepatic fibrosis remains to be determined. Therefore, we considered it important to investigate whether ILK is involved in activation of hepatic stellate cells and thus plays a role in the development of hepatic fibrosis. Immunohistochemical analysis of liver sections obtained from rats with CCl4-induced cirrhosis revealed increased expression a
