Unveiling perceptions: a small-scale qualitative case study related to patient experience of inpatient screening for familial hypercholesterolemia.

BACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a hereditary, genetic disorder disrupting the metabolism of low-density cholesterol from birth. Untreated, 50% of men develop atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) by age 50 and 30% of women by age 60. Evidence supports screening individuals with premature ASCVD; however, screening is limited, particularly in inpatient settings. AIM: Our aim was to explore the experiences of individuals presenting with premature ASCVD who were screened for FH during hospitalisation. METHOD: A small-scale qualitative case study followed COREQ (COnsol

A qualitative process evaluation of a clinical trial on bedside model-informed precision dosing of vancomycin in critically ill children.

INTRODUCTION: Model-Informed Precision Dosing (MIPD) is increasingly used to optimize vancomycin therapy in critically ill patients. However, process evaluations randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of MIPD remain rare, particularly in neonatal and pediatric intensive care. They provide however valuable insights about how and why interventions work. AIM: This study explored healthcare professionals' (HCPs) experiences with using the MIPD software for vancomycin during the BENEFICIAL-RCT in critically ill children and examined contextual factors influencing its use. METHOD: A qualitative descr

Nutritional Recovery After Critical Illness: A Qualitative Study of ICU Survivors' Experiences After Hospital Discharge.

INTRODUCTION: Substantial and persistent barriers to achieving adequate nutritional intake exist for adult survivors of critical illness in the year following hospital discharge. Despite the clear burden, nutrition rehabilitation remains a largely neglected component of post-ICU recovery. Greater understanding of lived experiences is needed to inform person-centred dietetic interventions. The aim was to explore how survivors of critical illness describe, interpret, and navigate their nutritional recovery after hospital discharge, and the personal, relational, and systemic factors that shape th

The UN Decade of healthy ageing in practice: A qualitative case study on perspectives of healthy ageing among older adults, healthcare professionals, and decision-makers in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Global populations are ageing, making healthy ageing an increasingly important priority. In Norway, the number of people aged 70 and above is expected to double by 2050. The UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) guides Norway's national programs on healthy ageing through its four action areas: combating ageism, age-friendly environments, integrated care and long-term care. The aim of this study is to explore how healthy ageing is understood and interpreted in Norway in light of the four action areas of UN's Decade of Healthy Ageing and the enabler listening to diverse voices and

Reasons for and against presymptomatic genetic testing in frontotemporal dementia: a qualitative study.

The majority of individuals at 50% risk of carrying a pathogenic variant causing frontotemporal dementia (FTD) chooses not to undergo presymptomatic genetic testing. To explore reasons of individuals at risk of genetic FTD for and against genetic testing, we conducted a secondary analysis of semi-structured interviews with 28 Dutch individuals at risk of genetic FTD: 11 carriers, three non-carriers and 14 individuals at 50% risk. We analyzed the data using inductive thematic analysis. Reasons in favor of presymptomatic genetic testing included wanting to know and relieving uncertainty, hoping

Emergency department culture and the care of older patients with frailty: a focused ethnography.

BACKGROUND: Culture shapes care delivery, professional communication, and the development of trust between patients and providers. Culture encompasses identifiable elements, shared values and beliefs, and underlying assumptions that shape behaviour. The Emergency Department (ED) subculture arises from its complex, high-pressure focus on acute illness. ED professionals increasingly encounter older patients with frailty, whose complex but often non-urgent needs require more holistic, individualised care. However, the ED subculture may hinder the provision of appropriate geriatric emergency care.

Implementation of peer support for families of children with CHD: leveraging the unique perspectives of leaders within patient/family organisations.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with CHD frequently experience psychological distress related to the chronic and unpredictable demands of their child's diagnosis. Peer support can mitigate distress and promote resilience, but few studies have explored factors affecting its implementation or the experiences of those who provide or facilitate peer support. This study aimed to identify barriers, facilitators, and recommendations for optimising peer support from the unique perspectives of leaders of patient/family organisations within the CHD community. METHODS: Using online crowdsourcing meth

Exploring the postpartum recovery after hyperemesis gravidarum: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperemesis Gravidarum affects 0.3-3.6% of women during pregnancy and has a significant impact on maternal health. AIM: To explore the postpartum recovery experiences of women who had hyperemesis gravidarum. METHODS: A large descriptive qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews to explore the postpartum experiences of women who had hyperemesis gravidarum within the previous 5

Identification of risk factors and response strategies in interhospital transfer of critically ill patients with respiratory infectious diseases: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory infectious disease epidemics challenge global public health. Critically ill patients need specialized care, making interhospital transfer pivotal for resource optimization; however, it carries substantial risks. The objective of the current study was to identify the risk factors for interhospital transfer of critically ill patients with respiratory infectious diseases and formulate response strategies. METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 12 research subjects, and the interview contents were analyzed via NVIVO11.0 software in accordance with Colaizzi'

Caring, pragmatic and discriminatory: how private paediatric outpatient providers normalise unequal care for Roma-ethnographic findings from affluent Slovakia.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare providers may enact discriminatory practices while perceiving themselves as caring and pragmatic. Whilst anti-Roma discrimination in Central and Eastern European healthcare has been documented in hospital and emergency settings in poorer regions, less is known about routine outpatient care in affluent areas. This ethnographic study examines how private paediatric outpatient providers in Slovakia’s most affluent region normalise unequal care for Roma families through everyday practices rationalised as contextually appropriate responses. METHODS: The study was conducted be
