The Association Between Hypothyroidism and Cognitive Function Change in Women across the Menopause Transition: The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation.

Background: Patients treated for hypothyroidism with levothyroxine (LT4) monotherapy may present with persistent hypothyroidism symptoms, including cognitive symptoms, despite having a normal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level. It remains unclear whether LT4 monotherapy is sufficient to normalize cognitive function outcomes over time. Methods: This is a multisite longitudinal study of a diverse group of women during midlife representing 5 ethnic/racial groups from 7 enrollment sites across the United States in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. Women were screened for a histor

Effect of age in women undergoing laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether elderly women (≥65 years) have an increased risk of complications and lower success when undergoing laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy (LSC) compared with younger women (<65 years). METHODS: This was a retrospective study of all LSC procedures performed from August 2014 to February 2021 by a single urogynecologic surgeon in an academic affiliated hospital system. Charts were identified through procedure codes. Patient demographics, clinical, surgical, and postoperative data were collected. The primary outcome of this study was to compare complications associated with

Effect of Race on Prediction of Brain Amyloidosis by Plasma Aβ42/Aβ40, Phosphorylated Tau, and Neurofilament Light.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether plasma biomarkers of amyloid (Aβ42/Aβ40), tau (p-tau181 and p-tau231), and neuroaxonal injury (neurofilament light chain [NfL]) detect brain amyloidosis consistently across racial groups. METHODS: Individuals enrolled in studies of memory and aging who self-identified as African American (AA) were matched 1:1 to self-identified non-Hispanic White (NHW) individuals by age, APOE ε4 carrier status, and cognitive status. Each participant underwent blood and CSF collection, and amyloid PET was performed in 103 participants (68%). Plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 was

Trends in Cannabis Use Disorder Diagnoses in the U.S. Veterans Health Administration, 2005-2019.

OBJECTIVE: In the United States, adult cannabis use has increased over time, but less information is available on time trends in cannabis use disorder. The authors used Veterans Health Administration (VHA) data to examine change over time in cannabis use disorder diagnoses among veterans, an important population subgroup, and whether such trends differ by age group (<35 years, 35-64 years, ≥65 years), sex, or race/ethnicity. METHODS: VHA electronic health records from 2005 to 2019 (range of Ns per year, 4,403,027-5,797,240) were used to identify the percentage of VHA patients seen each yea

Melanoma Thickness and Survival Trends in the United States, 1989 to 2009.

BACKGROUND: With melanoma incidence rising and mortality stable, some question whether the melanoma epidemic is real. Melanoma thickness and survival trends may provide insights, but previous studies have been limited because of missing data on thickness. METHODS: With a validated imputation method for missing thickness data, we characterized melanoma thickness and survival trends among men and women in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-9 registries between 1989 and 2009. A total of 98,498 cases of invasive melanoma were identified. All statistical tests were two-sided.

Real-time social support through a mobile virtual community to improve healthy behavior in overweight and sedentary adults: a focus group analysis.

BACKGROUND: The onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus can be prevented or delayed by lifestyle changes. Communication technologies such as a mobile phone can be used as a means of delivering these lifestyle changes. OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this analysis were to explore applicability of potential components of a mobile phone-based healthy lifestyle program and to understand motivators and barriers to continued engagement in a mobile phone healthy lifestyle program. METHODS: We conducted 6 focus groups (4 female and 2 male groups) in May and June 2010 with 35 focus group participants. The qual

In vitro fertilization as an independent risk factor for perinatal complications: Single-center 10 years cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) has made great strides in the past forty-years, but no medical treatment comes without side effects. Despite several studies reporting high incidences of perinatal complications, the association is inconclusive. Also, the effect of racially and ethnically distinguished Asian population undergoing ART on perinatal outcomes is not well studied. Therefore, this study attempts to compare various perinatal outcome parameters in ART, and spontaneously conceived singleton pregnancies from a single high-volume tertiary care center. METHODS: This is a

Is prenatal diet associated with the composition of the vaginal microbiome?

BACKGROUND: The vaginal microbiome has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, but information on the impact of diet on microbiome composition is largely unexamined. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between prenatal diet and vaginal microbiota composition overall and by race. METHODS: We leveraged a racially diverse prenatal cohort of North Carolina women enrolled between 1995 and 2001 to conduct this analysis using cross-sectional data. Women completed food frequency questionnaires about diet in the previous 3 months and foods were categorised into subgroups: fruits, vegetabl

"I Know How to Take Care of Myself.": Composite Narratives Among Rural Black Women Coping with Structural Inequities.

The rural mental health crisis is especially pronounced in Black women who are overburdened with social inequities. Persistent poverty and gendered racial microaggressions (GRM) are structural determinants that contribute to the disparities in Black women's health outcomes. Using the Africultural framework and a community-based, qualitative approach, this study illustrates the coping strategies of rural Black women who experience structural inequities. Participants included Black American, rural women in the Alabama Black Belt region. A community meeting (n = 1) was held with 38 participants,

Who Gets FIp? Understanding Contextual Factors in EIP Provision.

AIMS: Family Intervention for psychosis (FIp) reduces the risk of relapse and improves functioning. However, implementation barriers exist. Being from racially and/or ethnically minoritised groups and experiencing contextual stressors may impact pathways to care and illness progression and prognosis. We aimed to evaluate the delivery of FIp in routine practice in a diverse and deprived inner-city borough. Patterns of engagement with family work and the relationship between ethnicity, social stressors and engagement were explored. METHODS: Socio-demographic, service user data and verbatim info

Breaking the Silence: A Qualitative Analysis of Suicide Risk among Black Adolescents.

Suicide among Black adolescents, relative to any other racial or ethnic group, is rising at an accelerated pace, underscoring a pressing public mental health concern. Understanding the underlying causes would benefit from expanding culturally specific frameworks of suicide in Black youth. Because Black youth's perspectives of suicide have been largely neglected, Cultural Consensus Modeling (CCM), a multi-phase, inductive approach, was employed in the present investigation to characterize shared cultural beliefs about suicide in Black adolescents between the ages of 11 and 18 years. The purpose

Psychometric Evaluation of the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale in Sexual and Gender Minority Parents.

Emotion regulation (ER) in parenting is crucial for parental well-being and children's mental health. However, ER in parenting is often studied as a general construct, overlooking the unique challenges of caregiving, particularly for sexual and gender minority (SGM) parents. This study examines the psychometric properties of the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale (REPS) in parents across SGM status. Specifically, we leverage cross-sectional survey data from two national samples of ethno-racially diverse parents (n = 1,958, 32.3% sexual minority, 11.2% gender minority) to evaluate measureme

Diversifying the Lactation Workforce: A Strategy for Advancing Breastfeeding Equity in Los Angeles County.

Introduction: Breastfeeding disparities persist in Los Angeles County (LAC), particularly among communities of color, low-income families, and those with lower educational attainment. A key factor contributing to these disparities is the lack of racial and ethnic diversity among lactation professionals, particularly International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), limiting access to culturally congruent care. This study examines the demographic characteristics, certification status, and barriers to credentialing among lactation professionals in LAC. Methods: A cross-sectional surv

Public attitudes to xenotransplantation: A national survey in the United States.

Xenotransplantation (XTx) presents a potential clinical alternative to the shortage of human organs for transplantation. Before clinical trials occur in the United States, public assessments are crucial to understand potential barriers to acceptance. The purpose of this study was to explore barriers and identify characteristics associated with attitudes toward XTx. A survey assessing demographic characteristics and attitudes toward XTx was distributed to a nationally representative sample of adults aged ≥18 years in the United States. Regression analysis was employed to identify characteristic

Prevalence and correlates of knife-related victimization: Insights from the 2019 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample.

Few studies have explored the incidence and general trends in knife-related victimizations in the United States (US), especially in settings where preventive interventions can potentially be initiated such as emergency departments (EDs). The goal of the present investigation was to provide an empirical portrait of the psychosocial and behavioral health characteristics of patients assaulted by sharp objects, particularly knives, as revealed in EDs in the US, as less research has focused on knife victimization in the US than internationally. This study uses data from the 2019 Nationwide Emergenc

The Relationship between Body Appreciation and Health Behaviors among Women and Adolescent Girls: A Scoping Review.

Literature on body image and health behaviors has largely been pathology-based, investigating body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. Body appreciation is a useful construct of positive body image and has been used to understand its relationship with health behaviors beyond eating. This scoping review explores the literature on the relationship between body appreciation and physical health-promoting behaviors and health-compromising behaviors. A comprehensive search of databases was conducted to gather correlational studies written in English between January 2005 and November 2019. Behavio

Organ Donation Willingness Among Asian Americans: Results from a National Study.

Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial group in the USA, but their health disparities are often overlooked. Although their needs for transplantable organs are substantial, they have the lowest rates of organ donation per million compared to other Americans by race. To better understand Asian Americans' disposition toward organ donation, a self-administered survey was developed based on formative data collection and guidance from a Community Advisory Board composed of Asian American stakeholders. The instrument was deployed online, and quota sampling based on the 2017 American Community

Differences in survival among multiple myeloma patients in the United States SEER population by neighborhood socioeconomic status and race/ethnicity.

PurposeWe examined the combined influences of race/ethnicity and neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) on long-term survival among patients with multiple myeloma (MM).MethodsData from the 2000-2015 NCI Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER-18) were used. Census tract-level SES index was assessed in tertiles (low, medium, high SES). Competing-risk modeling was used to estimate sub-hazard ratios (SHR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for SES tertile adjusted for sex and age at diagnosis and stratified by race/ethnicity.ResultsOverall, living in a low SES neighborhood was
