Assessment of linear and angular measurements on three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomographic images.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to provide further evidence to demonstrate the precision and accuracy of maxillofacial linear and angular measurements obtained by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. STUDY DESIGN: The study population consisted of 15 dry human skulls that were submitted to CBCT, and 3-dimensional (3D) images were generated. Linear and angular measurements based on conventional craniometric anatomical landmarks, and were identified in 3D-CBCT images by 2 radiologists twice each independently. Subsequently, physical measurements were made by a third examiner

Hepatic fascioliasis at a London hospital--the importance of recognising typical radiological features to avoid a delay in diagnosis.

Hepatic fascioliasis is a zoonosis caused by the trematode Fasciola hepatica, which can cause hepatobiliary disease in humans via the ingestion of contaminated water or aquatic vegetables. Reported cases of human infection with F. hepatica arise in regions where cattle are raised, with particular abundance in South America and the Middle East. The typical radiological appearances associated with fascioliasis are well reported and are likely to be more easily recognisable by radiologists in these areas of high prevalence. However, in Western countries where the disease is seldom found, there ma

Typical and atypical manifestations of intrathoracic sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic disorder of unknown cause that is characterized by the presence of noncaseating granulomas. The radiological findings associated with sarcoidosis have been well described. The findings include symmetric, bilateral hilar and paratracheal lymphadenopathy, with or without concomitant parenchymal abnormalities (multiple small nodules in a peribronchovascular distribution along with irregular thickening of the interstitium). However, in 25% to 30% of cases, the radiological findings are atypical and unfamiliar to most radiologists, which cause difficulty for making a corre

Duplication of internal jugular veins: case report.

OBJECTIVES: We report a rare case of internal jugular vein duplications, in order to raise the level of awareness of this anomaly amongst ENT surgeons, radiologists and intensive care practitioners. We briefly review and discuss the related literature. CASE REPORT: Duplicated internal jugular veins are a rare anatomical finding. They may be subclinical, or may present with neck swellings that may be mistaken for laryngocoeles or branchial cysts. We present a case of bilateral internal jugular vein duplication in a young adult. The referral was made on the basis of intermittent neck swelling,

Clinical application of lung ultrasound in patients with acute dyspnea: differential diagnosis between cardiogenic and pulmonary causes.

This review discusses the usefulness of bedside lung ultrasound in the diagnostic distinction between the various causes of acute dyspnoea in the emergency department, with special attention to the differential diagnosis of pulmonary oedema and exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This is made possible by using mid- to low-end scanners and simple acquisition techniques accessible to both radiologists and clinicians. Major advantages include ready availability at the bedside, the absence of ionising radiation, high reproducibility and cost efficiency. The technique is b

Splenic artery aneurysm: a diagnostic challenge in the setting of extensive portal venous collaterals.

We present a 16-year-old boy with autoimmune liver disease and longstanding portal hypertension in whom a CT arteriogram demonstrated a large aneurysm arising from the distal, extra-parenchymal portion of the splenic artery. Because of its location adjacent to multiple venous collaterals, the aneurysm was indistinguishable from splenic varices on initial imaging with Doppler sonography and on portal venous-phase CT. There is an increased risk of rupture of splenic artery aneurysms in the post-liver transplant period, with high associated mortality, and therefore diagnosis of splenic artery ane

Dynamic MR imaging of the pelvic floor: a pictorial review.

Pelvic floor dysfunctions involving some or all pelvic viscera are complex conditions that occur frequently and primarily affect adult women. Because abnormalities of the three pelvic compartments are frequently associated, a complete survey of the entire pelvis is necessary for optimal patient management, especially before surgical correction is attempted. With the increasing use of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in assessing functional disorders of the pelvic floor, familiarity with normal imaging findings and features of pathologic conditions are important for radiologists. Dynamic MR imag

Local complications of hydatid disease involving thoracic cavity: imaging findings.

Hydatid disease, a worldwide zoonosis, is caused by the larval stage of the Echinococcus tapeworm. Although it can involve almost every organ of the body, lung involvement follows in frequency the hepatic infestation in adults and is the predominating site in children. Radiologically, hydatidosis usually demonstrates typical findings, but many patients are at risk of developing various complications of hydatid disease with atypical imaging findings and these are rarely described in the literature. In this pictorial review, the imaging features of local complications of hydatid disease involvin

Renovascular hypertension in children.

Renovascular disease is an uncommon but important cause of hypertension in children. It is usually diagnosed after a long delay because blood pressure is infrequently measured in children and high values are generally dismissed as inaccurate. Many children with renovascular disease have abnormalities of other blood vessels (aorta, cerebral, intestinal, or iliac). Individuals suspected of having the disorder can be investigated further with CT, MRI, or renal scintigraphy done before and after administration of an angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor, but angiography is still the gold standar

MRI findings of prepatellar Morel-Lavallée effusions.

OBJECTIVE: To describe MR imaging characteristics and treatment options for prepatellar closed degloving injuries or Morel-Lavallée effusions. Imaging features are discussed that may aid in the distinguishing of this entity from "housemaid's knee" or prepatellar bursitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR images of four young wrestlers were reviewed by two attending radiologists and one fellow, and correlative clinical data were collected using the electronic medical database. RESULTS: MR images in all cases showed a unilocular, T2 hyperintense prepatellar collection extending beyond the normal boun

Endoscopic ultrasound and percutaneous access for endoscopic biliary and pancreatic drainage after initially failed ERCP.

Although the success rates of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in accessing the bile and pancreatic ducts are quite high, failure to achieve duct access still occurs. Options in these cases have traditionally included percutaneous access or open surgical intervention. A combination percutaneous and endoscopic approach (ie, rendezvous procedure) is often used in cases of failed biliary cannulation by ERCP and occasionally for pancreatic duct access. However, this technique often results in complications and is hampered by the difficulty in coordinating schedules between int

Detectability of lung nodules using flat panel detector with dual energy subtraction by two shot method: evaluation by ROC method.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of dual-exposure dual energy subtraction technique in flat-panel chest radiography for lung nodules detection. Chest radiographs were acquired in 100 patients (57 men and 43 women; mean age, 60.2 years; range, 18-89 years) using a flat-panel digital chest system. These images were evaluated by seven radiologists. A continuous rating scale of 0-100 was used to represent each observer's confidence level regarding the presence or absence of lung nodules. Observer performance for detection of lung nodules with subtraction images was tested by

Sex proportion of offspring and exposure to radiation in male invasive cardiologists.

High radiation exposure among male radiologists has been reported to result in a significantly higher proportion of female offspring. This study examined whether work-related radiation exposure was associated with a higher propensity for female offspring among male interventional cardiologists. On behalf of the interventional committee of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, an Internet-based questionnaire was sent to the society's 2063 members. The 402 male respondents had a total of 518 biological offspring; 48.6% of them were female. Among the 172 high-volume male d

Ectopic supernumerary tooth on the inferior nasal concha.

Variations regarding the location of an ectopic tooth in the human nasal cavity, although rare, are documented in the literature, but presence of an ectopic tooth on the inferior nasal concha (INC) has not been reported. We observed an anomalous tooth projecting from the posterior margin of the right INC in two adult female skulls. A small quadrangular tooth projected beyond the posterior margin of the hard palate in one of the skulls and a medium sized conical tooth was observed in the other skull. The affected INC in both skulls were located more inferiorly compared to the opposite side and

The prevalence of wrist ganglia in an asymptomatic population: magnetic resonance evaluation.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on the wrists of 103 asymptomatic volunteers. The images were evaluated independently by two musculoskeletal radiologists and one orthopaedic surgeon. Wrist ganglia were identified in 53 out of the 103 wrists. The average long and short axes measurements were 8 mm (range 3-22) and 3 mm (range 2-10), respectively. Seventy per cent of the ganglia originated from the palmar capsule in the region of the interval between the radioscaphocapitate ligament and the long radiolunate ligament. Fourteen per cent of the ganglia were dorsal and originated from
